    Lucasfilm: "No one will see your face, your only action is to walk a few feet, and your voice will be modulated so no one will know it is you so we can replace you at the drop of a hat if you try to ask for money in the future. But you will technically be in Star Wars and maybe one day you could be as famous as Jeremy Bulloch."
    Wes: "SOLD! Do I have to give you my firstborn? Wife? Sign over my soul in a demonic ritual? I just need to a few hours to make that all happen if needed."

    9:05 - What was magical about Star Wars was that it came at the perfect moment and had the real actual magic of history and technology behind it. 1977 was a million miles beyond 1967 and the world was ready to get on board with the next adventure. George Lucas had just the right generational energy, sense of nostalgia, and kitsch sensibility to pull it off in a very sincere way. There is no cynicism in Star Wars. Everything is earnest. It works because it appeals to a universal ideal, to take humanistic action against a mindless mechanistic enemy. Star Wars spoke to the generation and set a tone for optimism in the face of adversity after a long period of struggle, war, and social revolution. It didn’t preach or condescend. It was pure operatic cinema, exemplifying the concept of the “space opera.” The first chapter that followed was even more enjoyable, and later chapters -uh- wavered in quality. But that very first film: Star Wars… I can’t think of any artistic cultural event that compares in its almost universal Human connection. Forget the hero’s journey. What makes Star Wars work is its simple humanity. And whenever we see that element in some Star Wars property that is the thing we fixate upon.

    It's a tragedy about how tie-in novelists are treated. Matthew Stover's novelization of Revenge of the Sith is an incredibly intelligent work by a very thoughtful author, who brought out the full potential of that story, deftly navigating around all the issues with the screenplay version. Movie novelizations aren't something you'd ever expect to contain that staggering level of merit, so he should be celebrated for that feat. Nowadays he is struggling financially with medical bills.

    • @johnard611
      @johnard611 8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah when I was young I read alot of novelizations and many of them were pretty good given the constraints they working under like usually having to finish writing before the movie was wrapped. The best one I read was "The Abyss" by Orson Scott Card where James Cameron gave enough lead time for Card to write meaningful backstories for the three main characters so that the actors could read them before filming began. Cameron also put Card up in a motel in Gaston, NC so he could visit the set during filming and watch dailies.

    • @jeyfromnowhere
      @jeyfromnowhere 5 місяців тому

      I say with zero shame that that novelization is one of my favorite books of all time.

    I have to say this, the Dome or the volume as I think it's called can be amazing. However, WHEN The Expanse comes back, talking to Apple Ty? Lol, stick with the Special FX company used seasons 1 thru 6. I say this honestly, I think the effects from The Expanse have been far superior than any Disney Star Wars series, save Andor. Don't fix anything that isn't broken. Looking forward to the next phase of The Expanse.

    • @johnard611
      @johnard611 8 місяців тому

      Perhaps it could be combination of the best parts of both approaches. The Star Trek shows also have their own version of the Volume (although I'm pretty sure John Favreau and Star Wars did it first) and I'm impressed by the "hard sci-fi" type of effects they can do.

    I didn’t see Star Wars until it released as a double billing with Empire in 1980.. I was kinda mesmerised seeing it all at once.. then I did see it on TV for a second viewing.. awesome.. but then for years, until probably DVDs were a thing in my mid twenties, I’d only seen it about 3 times. It was just so sacred to me, I didn’t want to see it too many times.. Of course I could probably recite half the script now in my 50s, but that’s how it was for many years

    There were some really great comics set between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, especially back during Marvel's first run for it back in the 70s - 80s. There is a young (teen) Leia story I'd love to see live action from then. They are hiding on the Falcon and she tells the story of her first training to fight. It could be a fantastic tragic story.

    I was born in 79 so my first Star Wars experiences here in Brazil were on tv, in the 80s. All dubbed of course.
    And then me and my same age neighbors recorded those in vhs and would watch all the time.
    Oh, the time without internet.
    When i noticed A New Hope was episode IV, i was mad episodes 1 to 3 had not been released in Brazil
    There was no easy way to search info on why New Hope was episode IV and that 1 to 3 had not been released it filmed anywhere.
    I think i found a star wars magazine that was huge, like news paper size and THERE i found info regarding episode iv being the first release

    With All the streamers removing properties off their platforms for whatever reason, i.e. to license to other platforms, "free up" server or bandwidth space, etc... Can you buy a device to "record" download shows/movies like us older folk, sorry Wes, did back in the day on VHS?? Also, not sure if i missed it or maybe it wasn't mentioned, but did Wes speak on working with the late Ray Stevenson? I know they didn't have a lot of scenes together but still must've been on set w/each other a bit.

      When I was watching something recently taped on VHS the commercials were always frustrating but if I watched it again a few years later I liked them. They were like a time capsule of years gone by... and I'm totally with Wes when it came to writing on the tapes, the labels were a mess. The first thing recorded would be written large in the middle of the label, everything after that got smaller and smaller, written in odd angles wherever it would fit.

    • @johnard611
      @johnard611 8 місяців тому

      @@simonemason2281 Yeah there was definitely a learning curve there but it helped as years went by that extra labels were sometimes included with new tapes and finally sold separately in retail stores.

    First 3 star wars are the original trilogy (OT, episodes 4-6, aka the good ones). Episodes 1-3 are the prequel trilogy (PT, good if you were born after 2000 because you grew up with them). Episodes 7-9 are the sequel trilogy (ST, hot garbage that Disney made their $4b star wars purchase back and then some but with no story planned out and directors gone crazy. Good acting by Adam Driver though)

    Ahsoka was terrible imho. Dave Filoni might be a great guy, but he is doing terrible Star Wars. The dialogue is atrocious. The character development is non existent. You don't get invested in the characters and all the action is for nothing, as there are no risks to anyone and plot armor is a light year thick.
    He turned Thrawn into an imbecile who makes mistake after mistake and only says "maybe it was for the best".
    His Thrawn is an optimistic moron.
    I wasnt able to even finish Ahsoka.
    Andor in the other hand... Masterpiece!
