- Are Sand Cats the cutest cats in the world? Many of our volunteers and tour guests think so... and thanks to our supporters we can continue to provide the best life possible for our sand cats in captivity. Watch as we add new sand to thier enclosures and build Canyon the sand cat his very own sand castle to explore, complete with catnip towers!

It's easy to forget that sand cats are wild cats that will probably bite your finger off if you manhandled them. They are so cute and small and they act like my own pet kitty! but I wouldn't make the mistake of trying to own one.

dagorider55 And I'd like an Ocalot but that's not happening but believe it or not there is such a thing as a domesticated Fox granted since they're a fairly new subspecies that was created through a science experiment into how domestication with dogs happened to a business venture the things will cost you 2 to 4k mainly because they were domesticated in Russia and breeders have yet to be established outside the nation but that is about how far I'd go with a so called Exotic pet because it's not a wild fox but a domesticated breed. These animals aren't domesticated and it definitely would be a lot harder to perform such an action with such wild beasts as for the foxes they started with Foxes that were most friendly twords humans and with each generation only kept the most social with humans for a breading population and let the others go an in just 3 genrations they had created a fox equivalent of what a dog is to a wolf

I love Sand cats, they look like kittens full grown and their babies are even more adorable. Canyon is lucky to live where he does.
vagouna Take that up with the prior owners. Big Cat Rescue takes in big cats that were abused or the owner, who should have never been pets, had one as a pet. Big Cat Rescue does their best to rehabilitated the cats to acclimate to the wild where they should be.. Unfortunately Sand Cats are from the Middle East so it isn't like BCR could just send Sand Cats to the Middle East. They are in a good place, especially if they are endangered.

Actually, Canyon is part of a species survival plan by the Saudia Arabian government. During one of the wars (I do not remember which) the Saudi government became concerned about the survival of the sand cats. They sent several to different areas in the US. Canyon is part of that program, that is why he is also not neutered.

The sand cats are the most beautiful of little kitties. I have to say a huge thank you to the blue army, they do a great job, and they never give up. Bless Big Cat Rescue.

There is an orange tabby cat with big fluffy cheeks in my neighborhood, and I think of Canyon everytime I see him! What a handsome lil feller! =)
In captivity, they have lived up to 13 years, but have a high juvenile mortality rate (41%). It varies by species and by individual cats. However, here at the sanctuary they get such a high quality diet and excellent vet care so many of the cats here live much longer that their normal life spans.
At least Canyon purr-sonalize his sandcastle the way that sand cat wanted...
