She still had that uniquely girlish voice - at 65, yet!

Jean Arthur still had a youthful and playful aura at age 65. Wonderful actress!

One of the best actresses ever! And easily the best of the screwball comediennes.

I define "screwball" as comedy with physicality. Jean Arthur really didn't do a lot of jumping around.
Perhaps the best example of screwball is Rosalind Russell in "His Girl Friday". She chases the jailer down the street and tackles him. The gangster tosses the old lady over his shoulder and carries her out the door. Rosalind fights off Cary Grant. "What are you doing? Playing osteopath?"
Or maybe Irene Dunne in "The Awful Truth". The dance she does towards the end is killer. Also, riding on the State Trooper's motorcycle handlebars and bouncing up and down to make the siren go off.
Another great example is Rosalind Russell in "Hired Wife" when she gets dragged around.
A great screwball comedy is "Merrily We Live". Clarence Kolb falls down the stairs and does the world's greatest pratfall in the kitchen.
The closest Jean Arthur came to screwball was maybe in "More Than A Secretary". She grabs that little blonde floozy and turns her over her knee and spanks her ass. That was pretty funny. Also with the crazy calisthenic routines.
Paulette Goddard once crawled under a table in a fancy Hollywood restaurant and gave her date a blowjob in front of everybody. But that was never in a movie.

It was the other way around. Paulette Goddard never did anything like that. However, director Anatole Litvak crawled underneath the table and serviced Goddard orally... That story both confirmed by Humphrey Bogart interview quotes, and in Joan Fontaine's autobiography..

It was always great to see the old time stars come out of retirement and appear on television in the 1960s, 70s & some even in the '80s. Jean had a great film career in the golden age.

Her voice changed, not as groggy or high pitched when she was younger but she looks about 40 or so years here, but she was at least 64.

And in the films she made at the height of her career, she looked 27 or so but was in her forties! I'm 36 and Jean makes me feel like I have nothing to worry about. For Jean, her best years only started in her late thirties! That was such an amazing thing considering this was back then, when actresses were usually retired from romantic roles at 40 or less. But Jean, Irene Dunne and a few others proved otherwise long before the middle aged but sexy actresses of today.

She was still beautiful, here. I think she could have carried on with film as a headliner in to the 1980's, just like Kathrine Hepburn.

her voice was changing. she was so genuine in her acting. there was a great warmth about her. you cant tell she has anxiety. this is great television. is this her only appearance on the show? how many more? im about to watch Shane !!!!

I believe that this was Ms. Arthur's first filmed appearance since the classic film Shane. A great star who worked with Billy Wilder, George Stevens, Frank Capra, Howard Hawks and co star with Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, James Stewart,Ronald Colman, Cary Grant and Joel McCrea, Ms. Arthur made a comeback on TV with her own Jean Arthur Show at Universal but it failed. Lucille Ball who was at one time a supporting player to Ms. Arthur in one of their films invited Jean Arthur to Desilu to see how quick TV work was in comparison to Film. Desilu tried to get Ms. Arthur a TV show but Jean went to Universal.

No, a producer saw this, and offered to create as how around her. It briefly ran in 1966. My comment should have been more precise - "It was the year after this that she got her own sit com". @@epaddon

Sure, she's got netting in front of her face, but she looks great...and she could out act anybody on the floor, if she had a smart script.
