PS Coburn was nominated for an Oscar for this and won it in 1943 for The More The Merrier, also with Jean Arthur. And as the store shopper, the inimitable Florence Bates strutting her inimitable stuff. Brilliance all over the place. Thanks for the post!
While all the other screwball actresses are great - and I love Stanwyck who is brilliant, and Hepburn and Loy and the rest of them - Jean Arthur warms my heart. All the time. And no matter how often I see the movie.
I love old movies , they are so full of light hearted humor and biting wit! Jean Arthur and Spring Byington are wonderful actresses, and Charles Coburn intriques me, great actor. He played Piggy" in Gentleman prefer blondes..!!
I love both of these actors immensely! Two of the best with these two are "The More the Merrier" and "The Devil and Miss Jones". Both are classics, but "The More the Merrier" is in a class of its own! One of the funniest movies I've ever seen!
I love Devil and Miss Jones and I love More The Merrier. They’re both wonderful because they have the actors Jean Arthur and Charles Coburn combined. The first time I seen More the Merrier was 21 months ago and I loved it. There’s another movie with Jean and Charles which is The Impatient Years but what’s disappointing is it was never released on VHS.
Near the end of his days, Jimmy Stewart was asked who he considered to be the best actress he ever worked with ? Stewart instantly replied "Jean Arthur". He said she was the strongest, most incredible person he'd ever worked with, and her skill and timing were unmatched
I really liked Devil and Miss Jones. The highlight of the film is the story of Norman Krasna, who isn't only funny but interesting to approach a controversial issue (labor conflict) in a very humorous and pedagogical way. The character of Charles Corbun seems to have been taken from one of Frank Capra's classic idealists. He plays a rancid and lonely businessman, who goes on to review his concepts after living with employees mistreated by the boss, but always supportive and willing to help the new colleague. It is in this environment, far from the formalities of power, of sycophantic and servile executives, that the character abandons authoritarian vices and rediscovers joy, and the pleasures of good coexistence and even love. After eliminating addictions, selfishness and pride, complete self-transformation is completed by identifying and solving problems. I'm very fond of Jean Arthur - curiously one of Frank Capra's favorite actresses, but the entire cast is flawless in this film, starting with Robert Cummings, the syndicalist "anti-hero", who in the end turns out to be a proponent of North- (Another character typical of Frank Capra's works), able to recite the Constitution on the tip of the tongue to criticize the state bureaucracy, defend freedom and the right to come and go. Another character that deserves attention is the one experienced by Spring Byington (I Dream of Jeanine). This actress is magnificent in the role of sensitive and romantic saleswoman, with total dominance of scene. Finally a piece of advice: don't miss the wine scene and the "crazy comedy" moment at the police station.
Mauricio Exenberger Great Review! 👍. I’m also a fan of Jean Arthur. Too bad they don’t have the likes of her anymore. Nowadays everything is either extremely violent or too much nudity(for my taste). Oh well, at least one can always go back to watching these masterpieces over and over!
Around 1970, my mother, a mature student at Vassar, saw Jean Arthur who was a drama teacher there. My mother was amused when a young student told my mother all about Jean Arthur since my mother knew who she was from seeing her movies before the student was even born.
I fall in love with Jean every time I see her.
I feel the same way about Charles Coburn 💗💗💗💗
Really? She’s no beauty!

Total fan of Jean Arthur too. If you haven't seen it, I recommend The More The Merrier with same cast
