lol mining is WAY harder than it seems. imo mining isn't a viable option for bitcoin anymore unless you are running a very nice rig with amazing hashrates. even when that's the case it will take years in order to get one bitcoin from mining unless you are a company.

The alternative is you saying "I'm not going to bother with a password because words are meant for communication, and a password of random characters is meaningless to anyone who reads it".

So, this computing power spent on mathematical problems... are these some real problems or just made up for use in mining? Are people, who are mining bitcoin, helping solve some real problems or are these problems made up solely for bitcoin mining and this computing power is just... well... wasted?

The mathematical problems don't need to solve practical MATHEMATICAL problems. They are already providing practical service by giving means to a fair, decentralised and highly secure monetary system. What alternative is there that is not corruptible?
When you devise a password for your email account, are those random letters and numbers actually communicating information to someone? Probably not, but they provide your email account security and give you full control. The alternative is you saying "I'm not going to bother with a password because words are meant for communication, and a password of random characters is meaningless to anyone who reads it".

I'm not sure how old you are, but parents do not wish such things unless the parents are at the bottom of the chain. You want to train your kids to be self sufficient. Not having to work equates to laziness (unless you have a different explanation). This is why even if I have a relatively secure income, I will train my kids to be frugal and save. I will try my best not to make them feel like they get whatever they want. Note that this is all relative. Even rich people can make their kids feel like this so that they learn something.
