In case of a double steel tubular pole mounted 3 phase distribution transformer is it important to provide an insulation/insulator between LA and metal channel on which LA is installed and why?
great video. i would love to do line work someday. i always knew what insulator, transformers, and cutouts were but i never had a complete understanding of lightning arresters.now i do. cool
I was always intrigued by why there are all those odd contraptions on electric utility poles. This explains it all and breaks down the concepts. I already was familiar with step down transformers and grounders but all the other equipment was a mystery to me.
There was a story in the local news about people stealing electricity or wires I cant remember and they got arrested. Maybe our local law enforcement should get in touch. Thanks again
I familiared with Lightning Arrestor at our Kaithal(400/220Kv),Power Grid Corporation of India Limited(C/O Alstom-GE T&D India Ltd.,GE-Energy Connections) site. I was an EHS Officer(Teamlease Ltd.,Bangalore).
Wow this the 1st time in my 35yrs just learned that those thing on the electrical post are arrester tho small but theyre functions are so big..now my question is can we put this arrester in our open field like school ground because we have already casualties of school children killed by lightning when they were caught up taking shelter on the shade trees when rain and thunder starts they had no time to run to our school building.
Thermal imaging is the best way to tell if an arrester is not failing. If it is not failing it is working. See www.arresterworks.com/arresterfacts/pdf_files/infrared_thermometer_as_arrester_tester.pdf
Also two lightning arrestors within a second becomes super hot when operating for that millisecond and if any cracks or erosion was to form outside the insulation it will explode aka a bad lightning arrestor
thanks a lot.. i am elect. engineer and in fact we do not utilize surge arresters except for 132-KV power line... i do not work for power company but i think due to non lightning area we live in, we never use SAs in less than 132000 volts... is that correct?
EXPLAINED WELL ABOUT THE MATERIAL FILLED IN THE L.A. WHAT IS THE SIMPLEST L.A. FOR A 3PHASE 4 WIRE 5 KVA POWER COMING TO A HOUSE TO BE INSTALLED AT THE LAST POLE & THE COST?. THANKS.
OK dear it's very usefull to learing. thank you for your Wonderful explanation.....what is my doublt is in ship we called surge suppersser we using in high voltage generator...do you have any idea about where it locate in generator Excatly and how we identify weither it is good or faulty..
What if I will install MOV every electrical socket in my house considering one outlet with extension cord supplying around 3 different applicances. Thank you.
My boss had me wearout 3 hacksaw blades trying to cut thru a 10kv arrestor longways. I gave up cutting thru the fins and only about 1/16th of the mov. That sucker is built to last!😮
Actually it isn't. A close, hard strike will blow one to bits! Seen it happen on my property. Was picking up pieces in a 30ft radius around the pole with the transformer on it.
Can high dog with no lightning cause a lightning arrestor to cut power? Guy on the ground said guy on the pole was fixing the arrestor at 3am when I got home. After listening to this, and what I could see through the fog in the dark, I dont think this would be an issue to come fix three hours into new years day unless the fuse blew, or the transformer was picking up extra charge from the arrestor malfunctioning? Maybe I'm thinking this wrong, but foggy high humidity conditions could cause static discharge that might warrant this? Would love any help from someone that knows this trade as I am below a layman.
Greetings Roland, An insulator is always an insulator. An Arrester is like an insulator until a surge comes along and then it turns into a conductor. It insulates most of the time. I like to call an arrester a smart insulator but niether the arrester or insulator manufacturers would like that.
Thanks great explanation. Just one question, what is the lightning's route? Is it through the lightning arrester? And there are also lightning arresters inside switchgear so what's the concept there?
Lightning, you’re under arrest!
So it’s basically a home surge protector on steroids.
Nice concise explanation.

great video, very clear and concise explaining of the concepts.
Ur way of explaining is sooo smooth.. I loved it.. It's just keep refreshing my mind... And made me easy to understand.. Ty so much..
Excellently explained. Soothing voice and I appreciate the bird at the end.
thanks for making such informative videos..it is a great help in my study and i am sure it is helping other in their studies too
So what are the pros and cons of this type of arrestor versus a gap type arrestor?
There was a story in the local news about people stealing electricity or wires I cant remember and they got arrested. Maybe our local law enforcement should get in touch. Thanks again
Well done. Thank you.

who loved his voice put a like
how is selection of surge arrestor is done based on current rating in Low volatge application.?What is Type 1, Type 2, etc,...

How can SPD protect my device when connected in circuit when power is off sometimes during rainny seasons and lightinig takes? T place.
This was just great sir!! helped a lot 😃
Good explanation.. thanks Sir.
I am in. grade 8 and I understand all this , but then ten seconds later " wait what , what did he just say😭"
Im watching this cause this video is in my online class😂
God bless really a great video... i was always confused about surge n lighting arrestor.
Thank you i need to give a presentation on Thursday. I hope i can explain it well please pray for me.
How did it go
@Lt.Dan it went well. Thank you for asking
How to test them to know it’s in good condition?

I've finally found Thor's weakness.
This type of arrestor was used on my tower crane
Also two lightning arrestors within a second becomes super hot when operating for that millisecond and if any cracks or erosion was to form outside the insulation it will explode aka a bad lightning arrestor
This video described the subject in a neat order and smart steps. Really helpful, thanks.

but what is the point of arresting the lightning if no charges are being brought?
Thank You
Sir ....... Sorry two say
All i need a chance .......
Separate job.... wireless electrical plant..... And provet
This was a perfect video

Thank you for the valuable information
Excellent explanation👌👌👌
What if I will install MOV every electrical socket in my house considering one outlet with extension cord supplying around 3 different applicances. Thank you.
nice subtle background music, kept the pacing apt
Thank you for the is video.. 😊
Thanks for your very good explanation.
Hope we are expecting more knowledge from you experience.
Thanks that means mov switching is far far faster than lightning understood
Thanks it really made me understand alot about the lightening arrester
great content, thank u for sharing

And what kind of hacksaw did that lightning strike use? Certainly not the hardware store variety?🫣😝
Probably some moisture inside that turned to steam when the bolt hit and expanded with force.@@lmsubman243
Thank you
simple and wonderful explanation 😊
Super explanation
What is the current path when lightening is occurred on Lightening arrester
Thank you, it was very helpful.
Short & informative.
Can i get the background music file?
Soo good
This explains why my transformer doesn't go kaput in a lightning storm, but the grid still goes out sometimes.
Best video to explain Surge Arresters (or Lightning Arresters) basic principles ! Congrats Jon
@@metarresters thank you
good video. Pike Engineering extends its greetings.
Thanx for the explanation
Thanks and more power.

Thanks. That video is understandable
Interesting way of diverting the charge to ground, many pathways from top to bottom of the insulator.
How many strikes are these good for?
Do we keep this lightning arrester in top of home
Thanks about info light arrester!
thanks a lot teacher , ♥♥♥
excellent explanation ...................
Insulators and lighting arrester are same sir
Whats is difference between surge arrestor and surge counter ?
any body help will help me
SA is the equipment that use to protect the transformer, SC is the material that use to count the number of lighting faults and the leakage current
What's the difference betwerrn an arrester and an insulator, arent they the same thing?

Superb clear educational video.
do post calculation video abt it ....
Thank you sir Jonthan! :)
From mine how does VCB works
thanks this video
which protection is given by lightning arrester
direct lightning protection or indirect lightning protection or both?
Both
Great video. it answer all my questions. Thanks
Great invention. Just outstanding idea.
Thanks u sir
How much receving distance
So it’s a diode for AC system
Great work😊
Very good informative video
voice is so much close to sir Tom Hanks!! thankyou sir for the explanation.
Nice & easy
Great presentation. Nice
Thanks
excellent graphic representation. thanks.
Thanks great explanation. Just one question, what is the lightning's route? Is it through the lightning arrester? And there are also lightning arresters inside switchgear so what's the concept there?
Yes, where else would it be?
Thank you soo much sir😊😊
very good explanation
nice explain. thanks
How about dry type transformer 440 to 220? Where do I install arrester?
If the transformer is exposed to surges, then put the arrester close to the transformer on the side of exposure.
What is the connection?
Because I tried put the ground bar and connected to the neutral. I think something wrong.
Simple and Clear. Thank You.
thank you
thank you
This answers my questions
#thank you sir
awesome explination 😘😘😘
