I have a some questions:
1. How many operations can a surge arrester withstand properly?
2. If a relatively new surge arrester explodes, does it mean the arrester didn't work properly? wasn't selected correctly? or was a victim of the randomness of lightning phenomena?

1. Number of operations depend upon frequency and type of faults and also frequency and type of surges.
2. Reasons for surge arrester burst are many. Such as high value fault. Type and frequency of surges.

Hi sir,i hsve the following questions:
1. I always had this doubt that how lightning will only fall on the LA or the lightning here we sre tslking about is the on the transmission line,but if it is the line then line has ground wire to ground it?Kindly explain.
2. The counter counts the number of operation but what is the leakage current measurement?which leakage current are we talking about?
3. I have heard that while taking back charge from a substation to charge our transformer,LA shows some leakage current,which inturn confirms that the line has been charged.Is that correct?
Answers to your questions
1. Lightning arrester provides path to ground for high surges. Wherever Lightning may strike, whichever part of the conductor or whatever equipment it may be, Lightning will pass to ground through surge arrester only. Saving other equipment from damage.
2. Leakage current through LA meter indicates how healthy ZnO elements are. And how healthy insulation inside LA is. Counter counts number of strikes experienced by LA.
3. Did not get the case being described.

Does ZnO act the same as a current transformer and saturate? And How do you have a circuit (µA) before saturation ? Is there a standard index of current to voltage at saturation (50:10 current voltage in CT's)

Thank you for the comment. Maximum electric field of surge arrester can be reduced by using suitable grading rings.
Sir but surge arrester absorb the energy of surges and divert it and lightning arrester just diverts the surges to the ground. I think this is the main difference.
Surge arrester protects electrical equipment from any over voltage surges due to faults or even lighting.
What is the range of normal leakage current in surge arrester?
It is around 0.1mA to 3mA. But it depends upon multiple factors such as design of LA, environmental conditions, age of LA etc.

Sir, Can you explain the effect of lead length on working of lightning arrestor.
Function of Lead in Surge Arrester is to conduct impulse current during surge voltage. Hence inductive voltage across the lead is built during surge. Same voltage is there across the protected parallel equipment. So in case of more lead length, more inductive voltage is built across protected equipment, which can cause equipment failure. Hence optimum lead length is necessary for Surge Arrester design. Hope this is helpful. Thank you for comment.

how to find out the nominal discharge current for 33 kv zno type LA?
The peak value of the current, selected by the manufacturer, that can be passed through LA to calculate nominal discharge current. Subject to guidelines by Standards.
