This was recorded during the pandemic so each artist recorded his vocals in his home. Only Austin was in studio singing to his girlfriend. Home Free produced some great work during Lockdown, making the best use of available technology.
I wouldn’t listen to this for weeks because I didn’t think ANYONE could do it justice after Percy Sledge. Silly me!! Home Free always brings it and Austin is the perfect person for this song!! Austin’s lady, Amberly, was behind the camera so we all got to see how he looks at her. Thanks for coming back around to Home Free!

Yes, Austin nailed it. He gives himself completely here and also plays very well with the cameras. The great harmonies, deep bass and the unbelievably freaking good beatboxing/vocal percussion/vocal sounds finish it all off for me. I think it sounds perfect because of all the different beautiful voices. I grew up performing Percy Sledge which I already loved. Then came Michael Bolton's performance where I couldn't say it was better. But this one from Home Free certainly is.
Most romantic? Yes. Between his vocals and the way he looks at the camera, I'm melting.
The lead is outstanding; soulful, full of passion and commitment. Austin knocks it out of the park, yet makes it sound both effortless and spontaneous.
The beatboxer Adam grounds the song and gives it structure, in a supportive way. I'm only now learning how his mike-ing (carried out like an actual drum kit) roots the percussive illusion and improves the sound, but the beatboxing itself is extraordinary.
The harmonies...

Austin did a fabulous job of this classic song. Loved Percy Sledge's version, but this was taken to another level. I think it is also better than Michael Bolton's version. And remember this was done during quarantine, so the guys weren't even together. The backing harmonies are great, along with Tim's bass. And Adam's vocal percussion is outstanding. Drummers have often commented on just how realistic his sound is. This is why these guys are my favorite a cappella group.
Austin gives this song his everything, from his toes to his eyebrows and everything in between to belt this song fabulously. The back up vocals didn't drown him out but only accentuated the power behind Austin's voice. I loved, loved, loved, Percy Sledge's version when I was a teenager, but Home Frees version is a very close second. Thanks for reacting to this song Barry
They did an amazing job on this. From what I understand Austin’s long time girlfriend was behind the camera. He was singing it to her (maybe why you thought it a so romantic version).
For a spiritual uplifting listen to them do How Great Tho Art. It’s simply beautiful.
Actually at that time Austin and Amberly hadn't been together long, so were completely loved up (though it's clear that almost 3 years later he still feels the same). For a long time Amberly didn't realise that her friend Austin was crazy about her or that her own feelings were changing, hence the great rush of joy we can hear in the song.
We know if you really like the way a song is sung by the difficulty you have in speaking during the review. 😊

It is amazing how well this turned out considering it was done during COVID lock down and they were in different states at the time.
By the time this came out they had mastered the techniques of recording separately in their homes and their producer Darren Rust is a genius at putting it all together.

I don't remember if you have reacted to their Sing-Off performances, but one thing Jewel said at one point was that Austin had those high notes in spades but seemed to shy away from them. I dare say he isn't shying away from the anymore.
What Jewel may not have realised was that the producers kept wanting endless rehearsal of the high stuff until Austin was lucky to escape permanent damage to his voice. By the time a song came to performance, he was probably worried about the top notes and that came over as shying away. In any case, in the finale she praised the fact that he no longer sounded afraid of the high stuff.
This is the best version I've heard...and I thought nobody could be better than Percy! Remember, this was done during quarantine where each of them did their part separately and their incredible production crew put it together. Some of their others in quarantine are Folsom Prison Blues and The Gambler.
And don't forget my own favourites, Moonshine and Everybody Walking This Land.
Also, his body language and obvious easy comfort reaching these notes are so fantastic in this too. (Also, his solo version of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables is soooo amazing)

Michael Bolton YELLED his remake, and finally Austin and Home Free SANG it better than even Percy did, as they always sing the songs better than the original artists!!!! I have seen them so many times in person, they are lovely funny and kind and the nicest guys in show business!!!!

Perfect description of Austin's vocal styling - "sparkling"! And there's an excellent reason why this was the most romantic version of this song you've heard - Austin's lady love, Amberlyn, was in the studio with him as he recorded the song! This was one of the many videos they did during the quarantine - they recorded their parts separately, and they were then mixed together. They were very creative with their quarantine videos!

Percy Sledge would be proud of this. You won't find a better cover of this. I know,I know, Michael Bolton. His version was fantastic. When the Bolton version is put up against Percy & Home Free it is a distant third place.
As for deciding which is better between Percy and Home Free, it comes down to what style you feel like listening to that day.
They're both incredible.

Austin just slayed this song. And was brilliantly supported by Adam's percussion and the guys' backup vocals. And you still need to check out VoicePlay! Vocally, they are on the same level as PTX and Home Free, but have their own unique style... a little more theatrical. Their Wicked Medley is incredible!

Being in a group known for their unity, Austin rarely gets to let that belt go, so this was magnificent.
Austin had refused to do this unless they got the OK from Bolton. If I was Michael, I'd be sorry now that I had told them to go ahead. The bass line, that beatboxing, the lovely harmonies from Chance and Rob... add them to Austin's performance and you have magic.
I have heard that Percy's version sounded angry about how a man was treated when he loved a woman, and that Bolton's sounded strained and like it was sung by someone who hated women. I'm not sure I'd buy into either of those completely, but Austin certainly doesn't fit either of those - he clearly is enjoying being deeply in love.
Not quite true, I think. No way would you humiliate your lead singer by asking an outsider if he's good enough to do a song. I believe Austin was either 1)afraid that people would compare him to Bolton and not take his version seriously or 2) was not in a good place for several years and used the Bolton thing as an excuse for a lack of confidence. He may also have felt that his own recent sorry mess of a private life made it difficult to sing such a song. I simply cannot imagine a self-respecting band approaching another singer that way as if the song were his property. I think this story about Bolton has grown in the telling! It's more likely that Tim dropped some hints on Twitter and joked that they hoped Bolton didn't mind.
Whatever, this version is sheer magic and one of the most simply enjoyable things that Home Free have done.
The thing I noticed most about Home Free's cover of this song is that it sounds more joyful in comparison to the mournful tone in other covers. Austin is a joy to watch and listen to. ❤️ GTSY Barry. I've missed your reactions lately. See you soon! 🎼❤️🎼
That's because HF refocused the song by changing the lyrics. Sledge wrote it as a breakup song.

Ya know, B, our brain is one of God's greatest gifts to us, but there are times that it can be our worse.
We can "decide "what" love is supposed to be, what it looks like, what turns us on, how it is "supposed" to feel and that gives a choice of who we love and where we look for it. (Can even be a inanimate object)
But that kind of love is a passing, yet often very exciting, moment of bliss... A temporary love.
Now, if you can find your best friend, someone you can share your deepest secrets and desires, have so much in common, someone that is more akin to the person you are, and that wants to give you more love than you ever dreamed of taking and you feel the same about them, then you have found real love, a love that stands the test of time.
Sure, there will be battles to fight, no love is perfect, but in the end... They will love you always.

At 76 and having played coronet, trumpet and baritone since age 11, I have some since of musical tones and scales. This was sparkling and the vocal harmonies were superb. Austin's vocal delivery was as close to perfection as one could achieve. This performance goes way over the top and we will be hard pressed to find a better version of same. I love your analysis and I have listened to this about 60 times and do not get exhausted but only want to hear more. db

It was my introduction to Home Free songs and I was immediately hooked.
Due to my own experiences, it hits me right in the feels and I tear up every time.
If you watch Austin's video Take the Night Off you'll see the lovely lady he's singing to here. She also appears as the tattoo'd warrior woman battling Austin in Home Free's video Brother. Her name's Amberly and she is also his partner in their outdoor channel The Beauty and The Bass. I love seeing them together.

I've always loved the late Percy Sledge's original and I think Home Free has done it more than justice - simply perfect. By the way, both Austin and Tim (bass) are song writers and have originals with Home Free and on their own channels. You might want to watch Home Free's video of Austin's original "Save the World" or "Stargazer Lilies" and Tim's originals "Remember This" or "What's Left of My Heart".

I think you do it perfectly with the facial, body and limited words run through the first time and then diving into a discussion about it after the full song experience as it runs through a second time (a Two For, getting 2 for the price of 1).
Neutral first impressions are difficult to pull off with an audience.
I don’t want to see real time pause reactions so often, especially with music because that often involves an emotion, constantly being paused too.
Kudos to you for hearing and feeling the music before talking about it, regardless of spectrum between like and dislike.
