  • Today in the dlgWoodWork shop we cast neon beads into Alumlite White.
Things didn't go well, but I still like the idea. This is sort of a to
be continued because I will attempt this again.

Heck, I don't think they turned out too bad. A couple of pits here and there can easily be filled with CA. I think they turned out pretty sweet!
I've had the same issues with things I've tried casting, one that comes to mind is legos. I think when you are embedding things with holes or cavities in them it works a little better to put the resin in the mold, then push the items into the resin trying to get the resin to fill the holes without trapping air. The holes are so small on the beads though, I think the best bet is to use a slow setting resin too so it will hopefully flow into those holes and so you have enough time to mess with them. It helps a bit to tap on the mold, maybe even stir the stuff around to try to free up any trapped air, vibration could help too.

+Zac Higgins thanks Zac. I will try this again down the road, I really like the look of the blanks, but I want to hopefully make them without the voids.

Looks like they would make some cool looking pens, really pop with the white!

David, You are not alone on this issue. I have had the same issues with plastic stuff(Legos, buttons, etc) with clear Alumilite. I tried Zacs advice and poured the Alumilite in the square mold first and then add the other materials. Much better results but still not perfect. JimE

They need to make some kind of alumilite spackle then.

I would not consider this a failure. I'd fill those pits with CA glue. Should get perfectly good end result. If you use the tube molds for this again, maybe try adding a few beads, then a bit of resin, then a few beads and work your way up the tube that way instead of filling with beads first. That will help with the bubbles, but may be difficult with the working time you have on that alumilite white.

+Andrew Grover when I try it again, I am going to use a horizontal mold, probably a small 2 or 3 blank mold.

I've been thinking of trying those beads also. My daughter has those darn things all over the floor in the basement and I'm constantly stepping on them. I would think some agitation might help the air bubbles come out. And also I've had better luck with pushing material with voids into the alumilite instead of pouring over top of material.

+Make Crazydays I think I will try it that way next time. Using Alumilite clear will give me a little more time to work with it also. I look forward to seeing you try this. I enjoy your videos.

David, I'm a new subscriber to your channel. I found out about you from Zac at NV Woodwerkz.
I'm new to casting, but those blanks are awsome ! if you still have one of those blanks I would love to try one.

+jim renderer Jim, thanks for the sub. I sent out the last of the blanks yesterday. All 3 were claimed fairly quickly. Thanks for watching. I would love to see some of your castings.

Thanks David. I'm not sure how, or if I should, trying to make a video but I'll try to shoot you a picture or two.

I wonder if you could use the glow in the dark beads?

+Marcy Cooper I have thought about that too. Once I get the process better, I may try that.

Can you use PR and you will have more working time for bubbles to raise up pressure at 80PSI

    • @dlgWoodWork
      @dlgWoodWork  8 років тому

+OZseasnake possibly, but I have not used PR. And my pressure pot is only rate for 60 psi.
