The respect they gave to Chadwick was heartwarming. The entire opening funeral scene with Black Panthers coffin made me feel genuine emotion.

I felt the opposite. They killed him with a “mysterious illness” offscreen when he deserved a heroes death. This movie carried no emotional weight outside of Chadwick not being there. They spent too much time on nonsense characters for me to feel anything.
I’m glad to see people appreciating Namor as much as I do. I love the way him and his people were portrayed and was my favorite part of the movie.

Obviously Chadwick Boseman can never be replaced. With that said, I think that Charlie made an adequate Black Panther. It’s clear that his acting chops have improved since Mockingjay Part 1. And that’s impressive, since his breakthrough performance in that film set an extremely high bar. It really feels like he was born into the role of T’Challa, similar to how Ryan Gosling was meant to play president Obama. I can’t wait to see him reprise the role in future MCU films.

I agree with the comments saying that Namor’s motives are much more than “he had a bad time once”. It’s implied that he knows what’s happening on the surface and the things ppl had done for resources (which I think is also why the Martin Freeman story line is needed to show wt other nations want to do) It’s reasonable that he doesn’t want to risk it. He was basically thinking like the Wakandans do before the first movie. But now that Wakanda revealed itself, he thinks that he has to take the Killmonger route.
You’ve made like 7 different assumptions to give him more motives and better writing lmao. Can’t accept that he just isn’t a good character. Such a mid movie. The first one was even worse though. Cliche crap that everyone pretends is saying something. Blade came out 20 years ago.
@@BaronVonBielski ok but blade was kinda mid tho, i thought this movie was great at honoring and paying tribute to Chadwick Boseman, if you dont agree on that at least, then ur just hypocritical
Yeah I think it was pretty clear that colonization was one of the major reason s for Namor’s actions, which makes total sense for a character who is supposed to be from the mesoamerican time period where Europeans were literally massacring and enslaving indigenous people big times. Like, yeah, let’s steer clear of that at all costs.
Seriously, this must be the first time that colonization and the genocide of an entire culture was summed up as a “rough time” lmao
Exactly. I thought Namor's motives were very clear and quite compelling. All he wanted was to be left alone. he had been hiding and protecting his people for like 500 years and wants to keep it that way. People had found Vibranium in the ocean and knows that if that were to get out that it might be the end for his people and so he's willing to do anything to ensure that his people are safe. That's a pretty damn compelling motive to me...

The wings on his ankles are canon with the comics! I was so glad to see that despite the audience not understanding it.
And thats the only thing thats canon aboit him
they could've made them bigger and attached to him more naturally like fish fins instead of looking like a prop, I'm all for comic book accuracy but I agree with Charlie that they were pretty goofy

Bad take on them not showing the strength of Namors people. They snuck in several times undetected to a hidden nation, flodded it, and physically overwhelmed them multiple times. They literally hypnotized people to jump into the water where they were killed. And did you not see him nearly cursh M’bakus chest and sent him flying? Namor and his people were done very well.
They could've used some more scenes showcasing their advanced tech, I was sitting there wondering how exactly they infiltrated Wakanda?
Plus they went with a more tribal aesthetic to their appearance, it would've have been pretty cool to see what Futuristic Mayan would've looked like
I agree with your point. Charlie also points out that they are supposed to be as technology advanced as the Wakandans. At no point was it stated that Naymor's group was supposed to be. Also they show his people to be regenerative and can come back from some fatal blows. It is obvious that they had their own strengths and they literally couldn't beat Naymor without draining him.
@@acedeadic8308 they glossed over their history over a 3min exposition dump in the middle of the movie, that was the most glaring evidence to me that Boseman's death effected the trajectory of this movies plot
@@acedeadic8308 yeah i think he may need to rewatch this one tbh. they have also been around forever & you could argue shuri is the reason wakanda is so technologically advanced. she sees what can be made with vibranium, its noted multiple times the elders prefer tradition. namor is similar to them being as old as he is
I think Charlie just had a bad take in general he thought namor was a weak villain which he wasn’t he also said it was the typical mcu formula which couldn’t be more of a lie this movie took it self very seriously which is unlike the mcu
Respectfully, I disagree with the comments on the Underwater nation. I truly felt they were a threat the entire time (their intro was some horror movie shit). Not to mention the one sided battle before the climax. Also, never found Namor to be lame, I found him quite intimidating with how powerful they made him. Also liked how he mixed with the theme and how his relationship with Shuri mirrors that of Killmonger vs Tchalla. (Both wanting the same thing but with a different approach)
Fax I was so immersed and lowkey nervous the whole time in the cinema
Yeah I don’t get what he meant that they didn’t feel like a threat when they invaded wakanda and nearly wiped them out. Sure it was a surprise attack but that’s the thing is that they could strike anytime they want out of nowhere.
I think it makes sense that what they lack in tech, they make up for in physical strength and skill
@@lordtachanka85even so wakanda never used more than like 5 ships at a time when we saw how much power they have in infinity war and the first black panther
I 100% agree. Also I don't think it was ever said Talokan was just as advanced as Wakanda, only that they were a legitimate threat. When Namor first enters Wakanda he's amazed by how advanced it is.
I actually think what they did with Namor was pretty interesting and they can definitely add to it. In the comics, I'm definitely more of an Aquaman dude than a Namor dude but, in live action it's a close contest, I like the backstory they gave Namor. In the comics Namor is a lot more of a Chad tho, the dude straight up takes on the Avengers by himself.

In most media, Namor is pretty much Marvel's Black Adam. Sinister and ruthless with the constant question of "why must we adhere to the lesser being? My kingdom should rule". I'd say Dr. Doom but he's a tactician, not a sinister murder. In both movies Adam and Namor are portrayed as "anti-heroes" rather then flat out villains. I hate that they made Namor kill the Queen when he was supposed to be civil (only resulting to war when provoked), but over all I enjoy the new wave of multidimensional villains rather than one -offs
@@jayymorris5285 tbf Namor was pretty emotional when he threw those bombs, but I don’t think he expected it to kill her right away, I think he wanted to get in there and shout at her for the way she betrayed him.

Namor (pronounced nay-more in pretty much everything but this movie) was marvel’s first superhero. Ok, yes the ankle wings are kinda goofy, but he has them in the comics. I don't get how people say that namors people weren't shown to be as powerful as they are when they literally forced the wakands to evacuate their highly protected home and were about to annihilate them at the end
@@Proxi02 Probably because underwater cavemen just casually swimming into the most technologically advanced civilization on earth without any resistance & destroying the city doesn’t make any sense. I know this is a comic book movie & it isn’t supposed to be logical but Wakanda could have easily wiped Namors people off the face of the earth very easily. The only reason they didn’t was because of the plot….
They literally had like 5 aircraft defending the city…. That scene was a joke
@@ryanb6614 There’s nothing Wakanda could do to Namor and his people. The people of Talocan have superhuman strength and regenerative abilities. Not that any of that matters because they can literally just chill in the ocean and continue to flood Wakanda. The aircraft advantage wasn’t present because they can use sonar to make the pilots commit suicide and Namor easily takes out 5 ships without breaking a sweat.
Namor also mentioned he has more soldiers than Wakanda has blades of grass in their army. Look at how Germany’s superior technology did for them when they had to face wave after wave of Soviet soldiers in unfavorable conditions. Namor can remain safe underwater and force Wakanda to evacuate out their flooded capital.
It’s totally believable that they’re a significant threat to Wakanda.

I...actually really enjoyed this movie. It was definitely long, but it had so much emotional impact for the core cast, that I found myself more invested in this movie than the first one. Especially with what's going on with Marvel's current 'handing over the mantle' phase going on right now, I expected hollow character moments that would just move the plot along with no depth. But, ngl, I found myself teary eyed and feeling for the protagonists. The main characters had such strong writing. Even the antagonist was something I enjoyed, even if I thought the winged feet was kinda weird at first. Also a rare Marvel story that doesn't boil down to a 'same vs. same' moment at the very end. Finally, a fight where the hero and the villain have two different sets of powers...
I think the threat that Namor imposed was the physical strengths his people have. They're physically stronger, more durable, and a lot harder to kill. All that with hus numbers as well.
So their threat was their immense strength in the individual soldier as well as the combined strength of his people, not really a technological advantage.
Edit:
Namor definitely was not a weak villain. I'm still annoyed that they changed him from being Atlantian to being an Aztec but he and his people were done well. Could they have used more scenes showing their strength to sell their threat better? Yeah but even so they were still done well.
Namor himself has a really strong back story that justifies why he does what he does and it's pretty much implied that he sees what's going on in the surface world and sees it as a threat to his people.
I think the real weak points in this movie were just the CGI and the unnecessary scenes with the Americans.
The Americans were necessary to the plot since Ross had to tell em about Riri and that set the stage for the entire movie bruh

Every Wakandan with plot armor was cornered on that ship and essentially moments from being shredded, while there were still hundreds of Namor's people. The only reason it wasn't an overwhelming win for Namor is that he agreed to stop the fighting to save his own life. The fact of the matter is, Namor's nation as a whole IS stronger than Wakanda.

as a Mexican and a fan of marvel, I never thought about the impactful of representation. Nor did I seek or really need marvel to do so, but I am grateful to Mr.coogler for changing Namor's back story from the comics to something more inclusive for the hispanic and native audience. I did feel Namor's pain when he saw colonizers enslaving his people. its such an important piece of our history that made me feel more connected to him and made me want to root for him. his connection to mayan culture made me feel pride from where I come from, made me appreciate the people who are rooted in the history that eventually became mexico. Namor's Headdress gave me goosebumps, He is Incredibly badass and no he may no look it traditionally for a comic book character. But he looked royal and strong and passionate for his people, values I associate with my Mexican heritage. He is badass, and his nation his nation is strong. Also we will learn more about Namor in the future since he also does a villain-to-hero turn in the comics, so I'll guess it's what they'll do in the movies too. For example he was part of the Illuminati with Iron Man, Prof X, Mr Fantastic and Doc Strange and he was also in Strange's Defenders team. That's why he isn't very fleshed out yet.
I am kinda happy they kept the wings since that was his design in old comics as well so it was kinda nice to see imo. and I also don't mind that they don't have wild laser weapons since they literally stayed in the depths of the ocean and didn't really interact with other civilizations. The added humor from M’Baku and Williams was great. The story was great (opening the door for another culture to the MCU). The cinematography was great. My only knock was Ironheart not getting movie time building the suit. (You literally described almost every super hero movies plot as a knock on this movie)
I really have to commend this movie (for a number of things, obviously) for being a near perfect example of how MCU humor SHOULD be (at least, when the movie/show isn’t explicitly trying to be a comedy). The humor was more subtle than not (“maybe I should come over and hop on your Peloton”), and only happened in scenes where it was appropriate. No quips during the two Wakandan funeral scenes, no immediate attempts at relieving the emotional tension, just letting the audience feel the weight of that pain the characters are in. I know this movie specifically IS more serious than most MCU projects due to the nature of Chadwick’s death, but I still think the writers for other MCU projects should look to this movie as an example to follow.
@@HS-mn6jc i believe the only time there were quips in a fighting scene was in the first scene with the Dora Milaje fighting the french army guys, other than that i dont remember any other quips being said in fight scenes. PLEASE MARVEL MORE OF THIS

“Damn this guy’s strong. He’ll fuck you in the face. This is a real tough opponent here.”
Great quote.
I don't really know what Charlie is talking about in saying that the villain is weak and his motivations and second half of the movie are more "Marvel formula". I thought Namor was a very intimidating villain with what he was capable of in the film yet is also sympathetic. I don't recall any other MCU movie having something similar in which Namor wants to hide his kingdom from the world and his distrust for other people. And the stuff Charlie mentions about the people in America I think is a good way to show world-building with other characters just associated with the Wakandans. It very clearly ties into the plot showing how tensions are forming between Wakanda and the rest of the world and Namor's presence reiterates that.
*Spoilers Below*
And this movie is the least "quippy" of any MCU movie and I don't recall hearing any more jokes in the second half than the first like Charlie said. When I think about the second half of the movie I think about Ramonda's death and how it impacts Shuri, the chilling scene of Killmonger talking to her on the ancestral plane, the final fight that was pretty captivating, and especially the mid-credits scene. I already knew what the mid-credits scene would be and it was exactly how I wanted it to play out, but I didn't expect to get as emotional as I did.
I don’t think it was ever stated that the underwater civilization was technologically equal to Wakanda. Their strength is in their numbers and their physiology and I don’t agree Wakanda could’ve taken them out if they wanted to because in both fights Wakanda was losing.
Right on the nail there. Plus, this is ignoring that they can literally hypnotize mass groups of people into killing themselves. And the water did some serious damage.
@@racool911 Yeah even if Shuri Killed Namor everyone else on the boat was cornered by the Talocan Warriors and would’ve been pushed to their death. Also a lot of people are over looking the fact that Namor witnessed 500 years of injustice and that’s what’s motivating him it wasn’t just one bad experience as a child.

Your point on Namor's wings reminds me of another review where the guy said, "for every person who thinks the wings look dumb you'd have 100 other angry people saying, 'what's the point of including Namor if you're not gonna do his wings?'." This is the biggest problem with Marvel, it's the biggest franchise on Earth currently which means for every creative decision one person likes there are going to be people who don't like it and vice versa. In the past when a safe, formulaic movie like Ant-Man came out it got positive reviews, but now a safe, formulaic movie like Thor: Love and Thunder gets dragged for months after its release by people nitpicking every detail because we're all familiar with the formula by now and want something different. I don't think the new Marvel movies and shows are any worse than the older ones, but I know a lot of people do and I think that's just because people's standards for superhero stories have gone up since Avengers: Endgame.
Namor's character works the best when you take the time to actually understand the mayan history. This movie is about culture so if you don't get the cultures you're just not gonna get it sorry. His back story was one of the most interesting because of the way they used mayan history to rewrite this kind of goofy character. His name kukulkan literally means winged serpent so i think it works really well.
The revenge theme in Black Panther is pretty cool imo. It's been in all Black Panther appearances, as a lesson they need to learn. T'Challa with Bucky, Killmonger with Wakanda, and now Shuri with Namor. Killmonger didn't really care to accept it, but I digress.
This has to be one of the best action packed and most emotionally powerful moves in the MCU at least in phase 4....Besides some of the seane's being a bit longer then I would have wanted and some of the lighting was to dark to see,I thought it was a decent film but the emotion was the thing that carried this film

Same tbh I gave it just a 9/10 because it had the same singular flaw just like Shang-Chi and NWH as they all find a way to come back to the Marvel Formula which kind of makes some choices and events during the movie seem void, but I also have to take into account that this is some of the best acting I’ve seen this year. 🚫🙎🏿♂️ people
Curious, how was his backstory improved
@@troycasten6742 honestly, in the comics his back story is almost non-existant. It's just "Atlantis" with people with Speedos.
The El-dorodo mythos integration and the Mayan influence worked well. It made Namors civilization actually make sense in the world.
Where-as comics namor just had too much overlap with Doom and DC aquaman. Yeah, we get it, you are a king and a super hero/villain.
@@ghostkill221 He was made before aqua man. Also his back story is interesting because he’s the first mutant yet he hates that title and prefers to be known only as Atlantean. His temperament is connected to how long he is exposed to water. Namor is insanely strong and has went toe to toe with the hulk. He’s such a cold leader that he killed his son and made himself sterile so nobody could take the throne and risk war with the surface.
@@troycasten6742 well that's a whole load of madness. Not the Namor I grew up with who was just a hauty guy in speedos. I like the character especially in The Invaders and was interested to see how they'd make him different from Aquaman. BTW I meant to say that the film was a welcome change of pace. I liked the whole Aztecs under water idea and the CGI underwater scenes with whales etc
For once I disagree. I was expecting not to really like this movie but it was done wonderfully. The music, irony, juxtaposition, etc was very enjoying to see. Hopefully we see more of Namor (whatever his name was). The only thing bad about the movie was just the unresolved US/Surface world tension.
Wings on the shoes weren’t meant to look “cool”. Their civilization is based on mesoamerican culture and lore. His character was done well based on that.

I enjoyed it. Can’t compare it to the first but it’s definitely a solid film.
Talokan said they have vibranium, but their strength was never claimed to be in their technology. It was always in their numbers, and they doubled down on their war of attrition. Even when Shuri defeated Namor, the Wakandans were cornered and saved only because Namor asked the Talokans to stop. At that point, they severely outnumbered the Wakandans on the ship, and more were climbing aboard. This was even mentioned by Namor in the beginning of the movie, "I have more soldiers than blades of grass [in Wakanda]".
