it's heartwarming how much Serge enjoy magic and canlander. he's always so excited to see Wheeler pop off even when it means he's about to get the rough end of the pineapple
Serge did a great job demonstrating how even Tempo Beatdown struggles against overwhelming card advantage. +14 Extra cards sure lets Wheeler have lots of answers. That daze was a real thing.
That Daze is now my second favorite North 100 showdown moment next to Wheeler's Paul impersonation. "Hit 'em again!" coming in third is Serge being upset that Wheeler is playing Fastbond in Eggs.
Ya know, I couldn’t place my finger on it, but 2 things I really like about this show: 1, y’all have a really good grasp on the cards and the game (I play with new-ish players and it gets frustrating sometimes) and 2, y’all have so much respect for each other. Idk, it’s nice to see; lots of friends get like bicker-y and banter-y, but y’all are just.. idk, having fun? Idk it’s great tho
I totally agree! I love when it gets to a point where they speak through the lines together because they’re both invested in figuring out if this is where the game ends. Or like asking what the other thinks the best idea is after they make a decision, it really does have the atmosphere of people who play the game a lot and also are just decent people win or lose
Something inside of me didn't believe that the 4/4 construct token was exclusive to Commander product and had to look it up. Turns out, it also had a printing in Core Set 2021 as a pairing to Chrome Replicator... I think I might be too familiar with tokens in MtG.
@47:25 I offer Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Every time one of those resolves at any table, everyone tends to erupt in cheers of "YO GARY" like something akin to wrestling fans cheering for their favourite heel.
i don't play canadian highlander, but when i saw my baby monastery mentor in the thumbnail i immediately clicked. happy to find someone else that likes that card and found a very good home for him
I think they played Comet incorrectly several times; it doesn't target and you can't respond once the dice have been rolled because the ability is in the process of resolving at that point. The card is pretty ridiculous.
Hello I am here to say very nice things about Serge in the UA-cam comments ❤ Also, North100 Showdown is a great show and everybody involved should be very proud.
wheeler's deck is like a swole version of the kind of izzet spells deck that I played a lot of when I first got into standard and I love it. now that mentor's back, I really should try putting together a jeskai deck and get back into standard sometime soon
At ~9:15 or so, if I'm reading Comet correctly he doesn't target, so Serge would not have been able to sac the token in response to rolling a 4. Also, it can't hit planeswalkers or battles on a 4 or 5, despite EVERY CARD IN EXISTENCE with "creature or player" printed on it getting errata to say "any target". tl;dr this card needed another pass through editing and also the "when you do" reflexive trigger introduced in Amonkhet
that is very interesting... as if it needed to be any stronger though. A lot of cards still say creature or player, it is a small thing to balance them. take a lot of the new cards for example, now that we have battles. So it does matter that it doesn't say any target
it's not an editing issue, it's the nature of dice rolling as well as the nature of when targets are chosen in the process of a spell or ability being put on the stack and/or when the target restrictions can change. It's like why Mythos of Nethroi has atypical wording. The dice being rolled and the effect chosen by that dice roll all are part of the same effect, and because of the order in which targets are declared, it's too late to declare targets by the time the damage is happening. Also, the reason it doesn't say "any target" is so that Comet can't target itself.
i mean, those "any target" cards were all before the Planeswalker change. They knew exactly what they wanted to target with Comet, otherwise they'd have said "any target". Heck, Battles might have even been in the concept phase when Comet was finishing up, so if they wanted to put any target, they would have. That's NOT an accident that it only hits creatures and players.
Very, very late to the party, but as i was trying to figure out what the play was, at 17:15 i was sure Wheeler would use Ice to tap the Urza's Saga in response to the fetch, denying the construct entirely. Good play either way.
Serge made it sound like he really misplayed on his Twitch stream. I know he's good at playing around things, but I think getting got by good interaction isn't as bad as a rough misplay. Good games, great decks, amazing hosts.
How does one get into this format if they don't have hundreds of dollars on mox and other cards at those price tags? I've always found the format interesting but it doesn't seem that accessible :/
Proxies or cockatrice are both great options. The webcam scene on the discord server is fully proxy friendly and most paper weeklies/monthlies and smaller events allow some amount of proxies if online magic isnt your thing.
Would it be possible, when you get the -2 option on the dog, to allow the ability to be countered (e.g. by ward, or by targetting a creature that the opponent then sacs) in order to not get the -2 loyalty from the ability resolving?
No, that damage ability doesn't actually target anything. It also can't be responded to either. The dice rolling and whichever ability ends up happening are all part of the resolution of the loyalty ability. By the time you roll the dice players can't take game actions until the ability has finished resolving.
Just so people are aware who didn't see the possibility (wasn't a good line in the game but it's a cool interaction): In game 3, Serge (maybe) could have safely attacked with the Inkmoth Nexus using the Blacksmith's Skill targeting the Nexus while it was still a land (assuming Skill resolves) to give it hexproof and indestructible. It wouldn't have really done anything because Teferi was at 2 and the Inkmoth wouldn't get the +2/+2, but still a good line to look out for when playing manlands and Skill
Funny thing about the Comet is that Serge has to react to it as soon as Wheeler says "I'm going to activate Comet" as none of the abilities target. So Wheeler could've killed the Servo the turn he hit Serge for 5. Weird little rules interaction there that just shows how messed up Comet is
I feel like tapping saga eith Ice in response to the fetch around 18:00 wouldve been hot also that map was sitting around way too long! could've started saga on T2
For Comet, Loyal Pup, serge would not have been able to sacrifice his token in response to the ability - the die roll and what comes after are all part of the same ability resolving (and the ability doesnt even target)! Comet is a very good dog. edit: someone beat me to the rules half of this but comet is a very good dog.
So fun fact, you can't respond to any Comet after letting the dice roll happen. You activate comet, and the ability to roll goes on the stack, but once the opponent lets that resolve, no player gains priority until after Comet is finished resolving whatever gets rolled.
Jeskai is the most infuriating deck in the format for me, it's the sole reason why I decided to prioritize other hobbies over canlander. Every game feels like it's the same, the only things that are different are what version of pyromancer they hit and what removal spell or counterspell removes your threats. Its not even that I dislike control decks, there is actual fun to be had in those matchups. But against jeskai it's just if you let them run with even a single threat on turn 2 or 3 you just lose. Combined with the fact that it's a very popular deck makes it absolute misery for me.
I love Comet. "Oh that's the bad roll. I dome you for 5."
it's heartwarming how much Serge enjoy magic and canlander. he's always so excited to see Wheeler pop off even when it means he's about to get the rough end of the pineapple

I felt that Daze in my soul, good god.
The look on wheelers face though 😅
Anyone else mesmerized constantly by Wheeler’s shuffling? I need to learn that
start now, you might have it down by 2040
Serge did a great job demonstrating how even Tempo Beatdown struggles against overwhelming card advantage. +14 Extra cards sure lets Wheeler have lots of answers. That daze was a real thing.
TBH, Serge never really gained much tempo in any of the matches. He was on the backfoot most of the set.
Serge, Wheeler, thank you for having me. It's great to be here!
That Daze is now my second favorite North 100 showdown moment next to Wheeler's Paul impersonation. "Hit 'em again!"

I love North 100 Showdown. Just wished it came out more frequently
The best Canadian Highlander show out there, and definitely the best looking hosts!
Wheeler never loses the dice roll on this show. It's getting crazy.
Better lucky than good
Well he is the premier dice roller of the format
He can’t keep getting away with this
Does Ben always win the die roll, or does Serge need to get some well-deserved luck? 😁😁
@@RhadeBoss Serge is a the Charlie Brown of LRR
Wheeler should've opened with "Thank you for being here, it's great to have me" just to continue the "oops it's backwards" joke xD
That daze was greasy, and the tap from ice making it possible??? I think I need to get up and walk around after that

Also, Serge hit the nail squarely on the head when he described Wheeler's deck as "oppressive."

Comet's -2 doesn't actually target a creature so it doesn't trigger ward at 33:00
I really enjoy how fun and chill these videos always are

Thanks for playing guys! Trying to learn how to play Jeskai Midrange myself.
None of comet’s abilities target, once the ability resolves (and you’ve rolled the dice) it can’t be responded to
came looking for this which is what i thought
I think they played Comet incorrectly several times; it doesn't target and you can't respond once the dice have been rolled because the ability is in the process of resolving at that point. The card is pretty ridiculous.
I love seeing jeskai; it’s my favorite combo. I have five individual jeskai commanders decks and try to make it a thing in every format I play

For Serge: The 4/4 Construct token existed in Core 2021 so should be easier to grab than you'd think
