The Jam - That's Entertainment Reaction

- In this video we check out The Jam once more. During taping, we noticed, but didn't mention, the tininess of the track. After looking through all the recordings on UA-cam, we decided that that was how it was recorded. It just seemed strange to us. Enjoy!

I love that song so much. Not the "That's Entertainment" of Hollywood, but the everyday life of the working class.
Their best song by far & contains their best line: "two lovers seeking the tranquillity of solitude ...." beautiful contrast to the humdrum reality of everyday life.
two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude.
@@padresteve619 Correct. My mistake.
@@Soup-Dragon1 Doh! Misremembering lyrics is my forte😁 though it's true I sometimes prefer them🙃
One of my all time favourite Jam tracks. I grew up in a rough northern England town and they provided a soundtrack to my early life.
The song is about how depressing every day working life is and longing for a life that has purpose, contentment and happiness.
I was living in a cold damp bed sit ! When I brought Sound effects and can remember putting this on for the first time and was just totally blown away by that’s entertainment!! Pure class!
Its a snap shot of life in England. The mundane and boring life that most people endured at the time. Encompassed with the odd piece of joy
This was a soundtrack to my first years living in a flat in Tooting Bec in London. Brilliant urban poetry by Weller. You can smell it if you've ever lived it. Slashed seat affairs 🙂
Opposite the Bec open air pool. This song is the smell of Tooting Bec tube, Northern line.
Brilliant meditation on the crushing mundanity and barely suppressed violence of working class poverty. Contrast the two lovers in this song with those in Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks to see how that mood of optimism was eroded in little over a decade.
yes and yes
This song is about simplicity. It’s about a mood. It’s about going out with some free time and being present in the moment. It’s about entertaining yourself with the realities of everyday life. It’s about finding happiness in your own thoughts and experiences and in your place in the world.
The acoustic guitar is both beautiful and brutal. The bass is frickin tight and ballsy. The drums is seemingly non-existent save for a knock here and there. The lead vocal is vicious with Paul Wellers frenetic, urgent approach and the harmonizing vocals are beautiful and catchy. Then the backward guitar comes in as just a little icing on the cake. This is the perfect post-punk pop song. Every single element of it is perfect and iconic. There’s not one thing to add or subtract that would make this any better. It’s a slice of heaven.
I'ts what the Jam specialised in, a form of satire. The light and whimsical acoustic guitars and sweet La La backing vocals contrasting the grim vignettes of british working class life in the vocal lines. An influence of the british punk scene they were contemporary with.
Best group I've seen live 🏴❤️
They’re in my top four along with The Clash New Model Army and Big Country. All brilliant live
Hi Guys thank you for taking a listen to this song . sorry I haven't been on before now I have a health problem . I always saw this song more as a protest song . back in the 70's and most of the 80's there were many strikes and riots in the UK . this song was written in 1980 so right in the middle of the madness . young people from inner cities had very little prospects hardly any jobs if there were jobs it was ones that they never wanted to do so they made their own entertainment which wasn't always lawful . they sing about A police car and a screaming siren the sound of boots and broken glass and thinking of holidays and that's all they could do was think of holidays because they could never afford them . they sing about waking in a A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls again because they couldn't afford better . back then the UK was a pretty grim place to be
Another absolute banger the song was never released as a single in the Uk it’s one of the jams best Paul Weller said in a interview that he was living in London at the time and wrote the song drunk in ten minutes about what he seen on the way home from the pub
It was never released but still reached the top 30 through import sales alone
There was a lack of drums on this track, so much so that Rick Buckler the drummer called his autobiography 'Thats Entertainment' 🤔
Grew up listening to the Jam, my dear departed big brother bestowed them on me , they have a special meaning to me now....great music ...
Recommended viewing.
As you learn into the light-live in Glasgow.
Weller masterful on the guitar
Great song; one of my top 5 or 10. Just three men and basic instruments. When I hear it it brings me right back to a grey period of my early twenties. I wouldn't want to relive it, but its a powerful reminder of the start of the full life I have now.
One of their best..
One of the best slices of kitchen sink, working class, being unemployed type songs ever written.
For more of the same try, Common People by Pulp, or Beasley Street by John Cooper Clark(it's much grimmer than That's Entertainment!)
As you said, about life. About working class Britiain back then. He wrote that in 10 minutes boozy after a night out. Thanks guys👍
Mr Weller just wrote songs about what he observed, until the money made him not observe , but a genius and I thank him .
Fantastic song 😊
Kia ora hello guys hay this is one of those songs that puts a lump in my throat takes me back somewhere in time LOVE IT
The storey of many a 80s UK life, making the most of your crappy situation listening to the sounds of everyday life using the what's around for ENTERTAINMENT
Only weller could get a line, two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude in song.
Never released in the UK as a single yet it charted at No. 21 in the UK as an import single from West Germany in 1981. Their is a live version on UA-cam from March 1982 of The Jam playing this live with Both Paul & Bruce on acoustic guitar.
'Two lover kissing in the scream of midnight...Reading the grafitti about slashed seat affairs'
This is beutiful modern poetry
Pure class one of the best bands ever Paul Weller wasn't even over 25 when he split the jam true talent 👍👍👍
Great stuff. Loving your appreciation of The Jam. Grew up listening to The Jam...they were so real and relevant in those dark days and times.
Gerard(Belfast)
Good choice but for me their best song will always be "Going Underground"
Switching genres here as you guys like to explore. Have you guys ever heard Johnny Clegg and Savuka ?
An English guy who teamed up with some outstanding Zulu musicians and delivered some great sounds with a south african township vibe.
He went on to perform with Nelson Mandela.
Not sure how many likes it will get but got a feeling you will enjoy it.
Johnny Clegg and Savuka "Too Early for the Sky"
Well spotted sir, some more passionate music that inspires! "Work For All" will remain one if the underrated LPs of all time by Juluka. " Sadly lost in a move. Thanks for mentioning "Going Underground" as I've decided to open my radio show show with it today!(Born Inside The Belly)(WAYO 104.3) Wed1-3 PM.(Listen Online).
@@lawrencefeldman7744 Cheers Lawrence, I'm in the UK , not sure if I'll be able to tune into your radio show ? I'll try to search for it.
Meanwhile, re African music , if you haven't heard it already (?) Check out Busi Mhlongo "Urban Zulu". It's wild and beautiful.
Great song love them live when I saw them
Anything but whimsical. It's an acoustic track on the whole (hence no drums) apart from the odd drumstick on the edge of a snare. A track, an ironic track about how life was shit. Not much has changed. Read the lyrics guys.
That's Entertainment, was claimed by the music press as Paul Wellers greatest work, Paul always said he wrote it in 10 mins on a piece of toilet paper after coming home passed from the pub, it entered the UK charts at number one....just about the sights, sounds and smells of everyday life in inner city UK in the seventies... pure genius.
This was never number one and it was never officially a uk single
Correct it entered the charts as an import
Toilet paper my arse.
Paul Weller was a genius in depicting everyday working-class life here in the UK back in the late 1970's. It was grim.
MTV have That's Entertainment in the top 500 songs of all time.
They are so sweet!!!! Bless them!!!
Now you need to find Squeeze
We know a few Squeeze songs. The obvious hits, I'm sure.
My fav, Town called Malice
Other great UK Mod Revival songs c.79-81 include:
PURPLE HEARTS- "millions like us"
CHORDS- "maybe tomorrow"
THE GAS - Ignore me"
MERTON PARKAS- "plastic smile"
TERRY TONIK- "just a little Mod"
VAPORS- "turning Japanese" (the ONLY UK Mod hit to receive Yank airplay!)
we know that song by Vapors for sure
The Chords, Maybe Tomorrow. Blinding track
@@kevinkingsley9353 Check the Chords' full album "Something's Missing" (1980). A very effective fusion of the early Clash and the Jam!
@@l.salisbury1253 will have to find it. I had some of their singles back in the day. I loved their version of "I'll keep on holding on" I think it was on a B side from memory.
It’s hard to find CD’s for the Jam or Paul Weller in the States. The other day, I found a CD of Paul Weller’s Wild Wood. Great album if you haven’t heard it…
It's got a strong drum sound all the way through. Not sure what you thought was keeping the beat.
The rest of us banging our heads against the wall?
You should react to Teenage Kicks by the Undertones, a seminal song from that post punk era.
As a reaction viewer, I'd recommend finding more adjectives other than "interesting". It's very neutral, and doesn't really say anything. Kudos for doing so much Jam. They're totally under appreciated on the western side of the Atlantic.
Reaction = "😶.... Interesting".
Definitely one of their best tunes
Just for fun and perhaps not as a reaction but they do Greta versions of The Batman theme and a slick version of Curtis Mayfield’s Move on Up..a Mod band paying Jazz/Soul… You are both patient and kind…Good on you.
No drums?! Don't let Rick Buckler hear you saying that.
He wrote this sat on a loo in a caravan in 20 mins
There is another version with full drum backing.
They stripped back the drums to make it more raw sounding
classic
Paul Weller legend
Can't wait for my request .
Try English Rose and Butterfly Collector for a different Jam
Good band to react to, however the DEMO version of "That's Entertainment" is the best version of this wonder song!
A song about the futility of life.
It is a real shame that The Jam never broke the American market, I have been a fan since 1977. The music is timeless and heavily influenced by The small faces and The Beatles.
The Kinks also.
No,no,no. its not about about how life could be entertainment. Its about trying to create a life being an entertainer
Morrissey did a cover version of this; Maybe Chris had already heard that one, and that's why this song felt familiar to him?! That cover version was the first one I'd heard, too.
Actually, I heard it in a movie, though I can't recall which one it is. That happens to me a lot. I'm also into movies. Not nearly as much as I am into music.
@@hanierfamily - Ah! Okay! 😊
Also Eton Rifles
I heard morrisseys cover before hearing this which is fantastic. You should check out the band cockney rebel 👍
"Gilbert O'Sullivan - Clair (1972) (Stereo / Lyrics)" if you copy and paste, it will take you to the right video. Today this song probably wouldn't get air time it's love song but I don't want preempt what you think about it? Hope you have a listen.
Great reaction, if you want to hear a bit more drums you might try Funeral Pyre by the same band. If you like this sort of music but don't want to keep litening to the same stuff, might I recommend Green Day who have a similar spiky, political but emotional feel to them.
We're quite familiar with Green Day. They were huge in Canada.
It's irony!
Weller wrote this in the bath after a shitty day and an even worse night out, It's my favourite and is better if you can actually understand his accent so get the irony!!
I enjoy these American reviews discovering The Jam for the first time but i’m always left disappointed as they never ever get the quintessential brilliance of Paul’s lyrics.
we are Canadian and we are enjoying The Jam. I am sure we will understand more as we delve into it.
@@hanierfamily Hi Guys
My sincere apologies for the insult 🙂 I was born in Scotland but have lived in England most of my life and I’m mistaken for being English daily !
My comment was not a criticism, it was merely an observation based on numerous You Tube reviews I have seen over the years on The Jam from your side of the pond.
My comments do in fact have wider connotations, as the lack of emotional attachment and possible relatability to The Jam’s lyrics were the main reason that The Jam were never really successful in North America and Canada. It’s only to be expected if that audience was not fully familiar with certain colloquial references.
Musically The Jam were a gifted powerhouse, but it’s the deep, observant and often enchanting lyrics of Paul Weller that really need to be appreciated, lyrics most of which were written in his late teens and very early 20’s, which makes them even more remarkable!
Anyway, keep listening out for more classic Jam tracks. If you get a chance to listen to their third album “All Mod Cons” , then you won’t be disappointed, a true masterpiece and the turning point in their career and in Paul’s songwriting. Standout track = “To Be Someone”.
Best regards.
Used to love the jam up till about 79 then Paul weller knew he needed to change direction on be left on the punk /new wave scrap heap, wrote some awful songs after that, much better songs in his library than this for example A bomb in wardour street
lol
@@ameliaportman7046 🤨😄👍
As much as I love The Jam, I've NEVER found "A KICK IN THE BALLS" very entertaining....🤔
Prefer Saturdays Kids .
He is being ironic and cynical about life in England being SHIT
Not ONE of the things mentioned in the lyrics to this song is remotely "Entertaining" it''s the kind of song only a British person could write as you yankie-doodle-dandies have no sense of irony. A kick in the balls is not even close to being entertaining / enjoyable - I can attest to that personally!!
Whimsical? What is remotely whimsical about the song?
Kill me! This is so bad!!!
My 2nd favorite band, after Roxy Music!!
