I big criticism this movie gets is being misanthropic, ignoring the average citizens in the movie and focusing on the government. I don’t agree. When I first saw it, I was terrified throughout. I felt for the innocent people and all the workers risking their lives. It’s what makes all of the destruction scenes so haunting.

We already know what is happening, the few scenes that focus on them is enough, everyone knows what is happening, people losing their homes and loved ones, the usual in these movies. I don't get why people think that every disaster movie should focus on civilians, sometimes it's more interesting to see what's the goverment up to.

A bit of a hot take, but the Shin Godzilla Movie is actually a faithful recreation to the Japanese culture and history and putting an iconic monster in the modern situation. The critics that the foreign watchers point out are actually what makes it a realistic, terrifying Godzilla movie. It isn't some heroic or monster vs monster movie. Its a disaster, and its how Japan sees Godzilla to be, a disaster that stemmed from the wrongdoings of the humans.

That's why it's my favorite Godzilla. I've always hated the concept that Godzilla is this "savior of humanity" figure and fighting monsters.
This is a creature born from radiation, growing larger than it should and becoming a pure monster that destroys everything in it's path. That's what it was in the beginning and what it always should have been.

Shin Goji is a critique of Japanese bureaucracy and at a same time, veiled message to Japan in accepting new and radical ideas from the mavericks, especially the youth. Godzilla is just the background where the entire story revolves upon, just like it was in the 50s version. Don't know to you Westerners but the message hits very close to home in my part of Asia too.

@@zonzillamagnus5902 keyword "balance". America went too far, while Japan is way too rigid. Why do you think Japanese women don't have many children? Because they were raised to believe only a salaryman is a good husband, but those jobs are extremely hard to get in today's Japan (the kind where you literally stay your whole life in one company and just climb the ladder for the years spent there). Similarily, Japanese working hours are anything but to be proud of (those are getting better every year, so thank God for that). On the other hand, hard migration control is a wonderful thing. Promoting local businesses and traditions is a wonderful thing. Both are needed for a country to prosper. Japan has historical experience what happens when you stick to the old without ever moving forward (someone will outrun you and force you to play by their rules).

Shin Godzilla may not be for everyone, but as a huge fan of Godzilla films good and bad it was time to have a film that updated the tone, and themes of the original. Personally I think it's one of the best, arguably the best Godzilla film because it takes the premise seriously, it becomes more than just another monster movie, and I feel the best Godzilla movies do that. While I enjoy the silly, and over the top Godzilla movies, it's movies like Shin Godzilla, Godzilla 54, Return of Godzilla 84/85, and Godzilla vs Biollante, or Destroyah, etc.that have kept the legacy going.

Probably the creepiest aspect of Godzilla's design aside from his eyes - those dead, beady, glassy, fish-like eyes - was the splitting lower jaw we first saw in the first atomic breath scene. It had no apparent reason to split; it was probably just a random mutation, likely from the radioactive waste it consumed. But it gave Godzilla an even more alien appearance, heightening his horrific nature.

I like to think that the multiple humanoid "5th forms" of Godzilla's evolution is the creature somehow recognizing the power inherent in massive cooperation, and adapt that ability. At the start of the counter attack, you can see that Godzilla's tail hasn't begun to change yet, so during the course of that attack it began changing to meet the new threat.

I think Mikako Ichikawa's character "Hiromi Ogashira" is incredibly underrated. Her struggles are the encapsulation of bureaucracy and sexism issues, born into a single character.

This movie did its job for Japanese people. It reminded the general audience what made the 54 movie an all-time classic, and it put the fear god back into Godzilla.

I'd like to note the strategy used against Shin bears a remarkable similarity to the one the US military thinks would actually kill Godzilla.
It fails horrifically once it reaches the B2 stage and results in the loss of all 3 bombers and the utter devastation of Tokyo, simply because Shin evolves in response to the pain the bombs cause him and lashes out in all directions. All of this possibly due to Anno making it a snide jab at trigger happy military officers who're indoctrinated by their own training and experience to think bombs and bullets can solve every problem they're faced with, as he's done in the past with Eva.

Great film. The actress was the perk for me. Other than that, I could not find anything that made me go 'oh this is boring, too much government exposition' because it also harkens back to the original. A lot of that film, aside from that somewhat romantic trio, it was all about stopping Gojira. The US and other powers were briefly addressed because they had to be. The implications of this creature changed everything. Likewise, the existence of this freak of nature in Shin Godzilla would have been a major topic of discussion between global powers.
Of all the kaijus, Shin Godzilla was the most frightening. Not only because of its mega atomic breath but because of how it came to be and what it could continue to birth. The post credits scene is a testament to that. Not to mention that in one of the deleted scenes, like John Carpenter's The Thing, it showed that the blood he spilled was still alive. It was eerie.

You may not learn a thing about these people's private lives, but you do follow along and see for yourself just how hard they work, how they keep going despite exhaustion and immense pressure, and how they find ways to navigate the situation they're in. Sometimes that's enough to show what a character's made of. We didn't need or have time for a subplot about some guy trying to locate his lost kid and make up with his estranged wife during all of this.

Easily in my top 3 movies. And it was so strange to me knowing that Godzilla started out as a cautionary tale with symbolism of just how much destruction we can cause, only to turn into a sometimes goofy, sometimes spectacularly cool, but in the end pretty standard “giant monster fights another giant monster” character. And as much as I loved those films, what really drew me in to begin with was the overwhelming tragedy that Godzilla caused, and the visceral imagery mirroring true events that once were. I had wanted a modern telling of that old Godzilla and Shin Gojira was so much more than I could ever ask for. It’s such a beautifully depressing movie. And Godzilla really is a void as the song suggests. No bottom, no end in sight, not even hope. Just praying for beams of light without even knowing why.

The take away for me regarding the tail represents the past unsettled rage underlining the civilian casualties of the atomic bombs dropped on non military targets. The scorched skin of Shin Godzilla reminiscent of the cruel images of those that burned due to nuclear blast but lived, although briefly, with 3rd degree burns on 100% of their bodies. The old footage and pictures are haunting and the test footage of the us using pigs at test sites before hand also disturbing. It is unusual how I am wording this, but I feel that "Shin Godzilla" is both an appreciated AND unappreciated film! It seems more appreciated by the general film audience both here and especially in Japan, otherwise it would not have won all of those awards. And in this country, critics were generally pleased, garnering a solid 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the G-fans that seem to be the most harshest on this picture. Some did not like the all CGI Godzilla and wanted the return of suitmation. Others thought it was too talkative (a criticism which I could agree with). And others thought it too political, too nationalistic. I wholehearted disagree on that one. If one wants to watch a G-film that has hints of nationalism, one has to look no further than "Godzilla vs, King Ghidorah".
"Shin Godzilla (I thought), was the most intriguing G movie since "Godzilla vs. Biollante"

I am a die-hard fan of the '54 movie. I love how serious the tone of the movie is, almost reverent towards the destructive power of nuclear energy/waste. When I watched Shin it was like a breath of fresh air! I totally got the same vibes like I got from watching '54 for the first time and to get that feeling was nothing short of magical!
I still highly enjoy the schmucky B-movies that came after, don't get me wrong! Ghidorah and Mothra are a packaged deal when discussing the movies. But I enjoy them in a different way than I do '54 and Shin.
And I agree with your last statement. IMO Biollante is a must for the American series. I'm kinda hoping that after we get Mecha Ghidorah, we'll get an after credits scene showing us a lab with a vase of roses.

Return to suitmation? I love godzilla movies and especially the heisei era, but a suit limits what you can do. Im not saying we should never do suitmation, but rejecting everything not using a suit would do the franchise a big disservice. The cgi of the shin godzilla is nothing short of amazing and i dont think theyd manage to replicate that look with suits.
Godzilla movies have often been talkative and as long as it dosent get too boring and takes away from what we want to see (looking at you godzilla 2014) im fine with it. Talking about godzilla or saving tokyo? Great! Talking about not godzilla? No thanks
Also too political and nationalistic seems like bs. It literally was a satire on japans inability to deal with the fukushima disaster. The movie even needed foreign aid (that didnt work), so nothing new there.

Makes me think the Covid Pandemic and the incompetency of governments in real life, except sometimes in some countries, that incompetency can be openly malicious unlike in Shin Godzilla.

Shin Godzilla was never an easy movie for non-Japanese to understand.
This was a wonderful explanatory video that went into the background and history of the film.
As a Japanese, I am sincerely pleased!
    Thank you very much.
(Sorry about the copywrite clame from Toho Pictures. As you know, they do not understand English well.)

Shin Godzilla is my favorite version and movie of Godzilla because it’s about him doing what he’s suppose to do, DESTROY HUMANITY and uses real life events that happened. It is really a masterpiece in my opinion. And I thinks it’s great.

The use of vocals in the score actually scared the hell out of me. It makes Godzilla feel 10x scarier and drastically changes my "go destroy things mood" to "No! DONT COME NEAR ME!"

i think the goofy first design of Godzilla is genius.
people complain about goofy monster designs in horror and such, but try to think about it. if you saw a monster like that in front of you, you would be terrified.

Excellent analysis. You even get the ending with the tail, which I believe to be a visceral scene meant to invoke sensations and thoughts in a viewer on a more primal, pre-verbal level. It is impossible to dictate what this scene "means" because everyone will interpret it differently and that's exactly the point. Good video and even made me think differently about a few things even though I've seen this film 10 times and the original Evangelion 3 times.

Higuchi's work on the Gamera trilogy might still be my favorite kaiju effects work ever. Even at no budget, he was creative as heck, and when he had budget, he was amazing.

The fire breath scene could also be a reference to the fire bombing of Tokyo During WW2, the single most destructive bombing raid in human history, an event overshadowed by the nuclear bombs, but just as notable.

I just watched Shin Godzilla again, for the fourth time since it was released. Your review is more than perceptive, it's spot on. This is simply a great movie, period, and I believe hands down it is the greatest of ALL Godzilla movies, including the first, and the 2014 version, which is a quick second place. Bravo!

when I saw the king of the monsters (2019) I left the theater pumped up excited and ready for more,
but when I left the theater of shin Godzilla, I was just in awe at the destructive unnatural force that Godzilla is, it really had me thinking of it for hours, it almost had a heaviness to it, the outstanding scene showcasing the atomic breath playing over in my head with the amazing score and soundtrack that really sells it. the way that both the Americans and Japanese excitement over what they thought to be killing Godzilla only turned to nothing short of sheer horror on both fronts when he released a cataclysmic beam, left with nothing but fire, ashes.... and the overlooking, figure, glowing, with blood-stained scales, and a sickly jagged smile, knowing that canonically his body would evolve slowly taking over this planet and spreading on to the next is scarily terrifying, he, no.... IT really is EVOLUTION incarnate. nothing short of a god.

Honestly this is my favorite Godzilla movie, period. My gripe with the critics saying that there is no character development, the conflict in the film is so fast paced that there is literally no time for character development. And from watching the movie a good couple of times I have concluded that there's a total of 2 main "characters" in this film, being Japan and Godzilla.
