      @@peterhammer4644 Well, I'd say she achieves perfectly well according to her limited talent. To me her groundstrokes look like the result of a lot of desire, effort and perseverance. It's the reality of this sport though that there are loads of naturally very gifted players that never really make it in the end. What she lacks in natural aptitude she compensates with hard work and dedication though and it's these sort of talents that often turns out to be so much more important. I had rather watched another match with Ostapenkop who got loads of that natural feel fro swinging a racket, touching a ball.

      I am a huge fan of Anett and Iga. I became a fan of both of them not because of their play but because of UA-cam videos. I really liked their sweet personalities and started rooting for them. I have gotten up in the middle of the night to watch them play some of their matches overseas (especially in the Australian tournaments). I would never have guessed that both of them would make it to the finals in a 1000 tournament. Since Anett is older, I sort of lean toward wanting her to win, but I will be happy if both play well. Kontaveit shockingly dissected the game of Ostapenko (who was blowing great players off the court), and Iga really surprised me.......she started playing much more aggressive tennis than in the past. She said that she and her coach recognized that it was the only way she could stay ranked among the top players. She took it to Sabalenka and Sakkari. I'm really happy for both.

In the second set Ostapenko was more patient and Kontaveit went into a bit of a defensive shell, which set up a pretty epic finish, culminated by that net point (going Kontaveit';s way), and with Kontaveit withstanding Ostapenko's comeback!! Jelena has beaten both of those players recently. However, Anett gets "inside Jelena's head", because of her amazing movement/instincts/maturity - you never see her behaving like "a spoiled brat", when the match isn't going her way. Did people really forget that St. Petersburg happened not even 1 month ago? Kontaveit literally defeated Ostapenko there, so no surprise here because Anett played the same game style with Ostapenko, it's just that the slight lack of power in comparison to Aljona in both wings redeemed by Kontaveit with playing less error-prone game and better serving

    It seems style or type can win or lose these players a match.
    Just about two-three months ago Muguruza beat Kontaveit Twice at the WTA finals, straight sets both times I believe.
    Yet, Ostapenko easily beat Muguruza at this Qatar event but Kontaveit beats Ostapenko easily.
    I hope Iga plays well at this final for a Good match against Anett.
    Lastly, for me its moronic that most people think a net ball-point is something to frown at: the goal of the play is to get the ball to the other side inbound. That's it. The RULE. I can just imagine how stupid it would be if American football kickers were to apologize for hitting the poles with the ball for the extra point or for the three points, or soccer players apologizing for also hitting the poles when getting a goal, or baseball players for hitting the far-back homerun stands-boundaries when hitting one out or when...It is outright a Stupid tradition in tennis.

    Brilliant match from Kontaveit, to beat an in-form Ostapenko. Konta took 'pesky' Penko out of her game and rhythm quite effectively. Perhaps no other player in this tournament could have done it. Penko was playing great tennis all along. Well done to Kontaveit!

    • @888drpepper
      @888drpepper 2 роки тому +3

      Finally someone who understands a little about professional tennis. You are absolutely correct. Ostapenko was in form and playing great tennis. So much so that if you go look at the comments after the Ostapenko vs. Muguruza match, nearly every single person said Ostapenko would easily win this tournament and that she can beat anyone. There is no question that Ostapenko has some massive groundstrokes and when she is on, she looks unbeatable. Kontaveit came in the match with the strategy of taking Penko out of her comfort zone. She tried, as much as possible, to hit the ball hard and deep. She was successful and it kept Penko off balance. Her frustration really started to show for a long stretch of the match and she was constantly hitting unforced errors. So much for the high risk, high reward style of play that is Ostapenko. This is what people don't understand about Barty. She finds ways to neutralize her opponents. The average tennis fan sees someone like Ostapenko hitting players off the court and assumes she can do it against everyone. Kontaveit was the last one to beat Ostapenko about 2-3 weeks ago in St. Pete. Again, it was a 2 setter. Kontaveit is smart. Other players have more raw talent, but she optimizes the talent she has and came in with great game plan to throw Ostapenko off her game. We will see a lot more of Penko, and I expect her to win more tournaments, but this idea that she is the best, just because she looks so dominant at times is shortsighted. Her consistency is improving, but you saw how rattled she got when Kontaveit was pressing her. She still has some growing to do.

    I really thought this would be a lot closer but to me Kontaveit played her usual hard hitting "take no prisoners" tennis while Ostapenko was not on like she has been. Her errors is what did her in and that could be because she knew she had to get immediately and fully on offense or she would be in trouble. I thought Kontaveit didn't even hit that many deep, hard to get shots in early on but Ostapenko just couldn't get on course or stay that consistent. Most matches are lost not by lack of winners but errors as this proved.

    When you get a shot against you like JO did down 4-5, ad out and you are standing right by the net and AK hits the net and trickles over. Its not your day. I was impressed by AKs court coverage so either she was able to read JOs shots or JO was alittle off the mark. Anett is a fighter though. Her and Collins can dig deep and sometimes thats enough to get you through. I remember watching the last 2 matches for JO and both Mugi and BK walked off the court in shock. Compliments to both ladies, high quality tennis.

    Congratulations to both of them, Anett for having won the match and to Ostapenko for having reached another semifinal this year after beating 6 grand slam champions and for recently playing such an amazing and entertaining tennis. JO possesses so much power but just couldn’t control it today. It’s ok, she’s already done a wonderful job, she needs to rest and get ready for whatever comes next. Let’s go Anett, although I’m not really sure if I’m with her or Iga… May the best player win it all. 🏆
