    just another tip of the hat to you. i wish more of these younger "tiny house" people who try to cram 10k of fancy European appliances into a shed, would learn to appreciate the thriftiness, dedication and plain old enjoyment of working with your hands that goes into these things that you and people like you get to experience. thanks again.

    What a great job you did inside and out. The inside interior looks very homey and comfortable. Very professionally
    done with quality finish work. Using some used material for finish work. You are very talented to have done all the
    yourself. One of the best builds I have seen. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks Gail for your compliments. It was a work of passion for me, and i am pleased with the results. I have used this camper now many time and it has met all my best expectations as a solid camper, all the functionality i need, as well as comfort. I am preparing for a three week trip from Texas, to Colorado, Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, and back to Texas. Hope you can use some of my ideas going forward. Thanks for Watching!! Ottodiezel

    Your build is awesome! I am looking at a nearly identical box truck (10 foot box, side door, windows on each side and barn doors in the back), and you gave me some great ideas. I will be going solar for most of my power, as I plan to boondock a lot, but I love how you set yours up.
    Your shower and grey water tank set up is particularly interesting for me, as one of the main reasons I want a box truck (instead of a passenger or cargo van) is to have an indoor shower. Expanding the pass through in order to swivel the passenger seat is also just brilliant, as not being able to turn the passenger seat into a lounge chair was a tradeoff I was not looking forward to with the box truck vs my conversion van.
    While my design will differ, thanks so much for showing what can be done in such a small space.

      You have everything a person could need arranged so well. I think that the amount of light that comes in and the uncluttered look make the space look very peaceful and homey. The towel/curtain idea that you came up with is great too. The wooden cabinets are a nice feature too.

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  8 років тому

      Thanks again! Yes it is a very homey space. I recently added screens to the windows, and now can open them without letting in bugs, curtains work well for such a simple arrangement. I appreciate your feedback! Thanks!

    What a beautiful build! You have very good taste. I love the designer eye.
    Makes me jelly. I wish I could do something like this, but I don't have the skills. I have medical needs, so not possible, for now. I can still dream.
    When I saw how RVs are built (to instantly fall apart, requires a fortune in repairs, & mostly parked in a repair shop), I quickly saw the wisdom of a DIY.
    Thank you, that was fun to see.
    (Back when I was going to have a mansion built, I was addicted to watching home building & repair TV shows.
    Now I'm downsizing my ideas, but I rather like it. Good for the soul.)

      RVs are poorly made, I am now looking for a smallish box van. I amazed to get this far along. Keep dreaming.

    • @JKLauderdale
      @JKLauderdale 6 років тому

      @@rebeccatreeseed410 One thing you'll find with van builds is the inability to squeeze in a shower and toilet. A van build can go from a cozy den to live in to living with regrets due to the compromises you've had to make.
      Trust me when I tell you that for long term living, get yourself a mid-size shuttle bus or a 16' box truck. That extra space makes for a WORLD of difference.
      One site you may find interesting is skoolie .net. I took alot of my ideas off of several builds I found there and the community is full of helpful people.

    • @nopejoeandangie
      @nopejoeandangie 6 років тому

      @@JKLauderdale Yeah I don't see a lot of showers around here. The best I saw was a European build in a VW LT35 luzon box truck. But otherwise the truck looked kinda cramped, yet those box trucks are bigger than this guy's setup. I'll tell you though, for a big bathroom I would sacrifice some laying-around space. A bathroom is the most important thing to me, I don't care as much about other crap.
      ua-cam.com/video/I6UsKNYpnWg/v-deo.html

    • @JKLauderdale
      @JKLauderdale 6 років тому

      @@nopejoeandangie Nice aesthetics but tile, backer board, thinset and grout are all unnecessary weight. Not to mention, the more grout lines in the shower, the more places for mold to grow and mold is the LAST thing you want in any RV concept. A simple, off-the-shelf purchase shower stall works fine if your vehicle has the height.
      I used a box truck simply because it's just as anonymous as a van and offers more space for the build options. The mileage sucks but I don't often travel outside of FL so that's rarely an issue. Only time that's come up was running, (OK technically driving) away from a Cat3 and it took me, my 2 girls, my mom, 2 dogs and the cat with no stress. We went from Ft Lauderdale FL to Hickory NC in relative comfort considering the crowd on board.

    One of the smartest conversions I've seen. My dream is to make the two cab seats into a three-seater convertable bed/living room couch/dining room seating (making more space for the rest of the van) and putting the shower and toilet in the back part of the box, where the bed currently lies. (But that's just me, lol) You did everything else I'd want in my dream box van home. ^_^ The cabinetry, plumbing, wiring, insulation, wheel well use are all wonderful! It's neat, it's clean, and it's well designed!!

    Amazing attention to detail and a lot of your design, materials, and installation are going to help me with my project. What are you using for power? Propane, solar, ? and is it enough to sustain your energy needs outside of a quick trip?

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  8 років тому +4

      Hi, since i focus on going to places where power is available, i only use 120V AC, and also charge two deep cell batteries. If no power is available, my batteries can last for two full days also powering the refrigerator, lights and fan if necessary. I only carry propane for a gas grill that i now carry in the storage area in the back, and do not use solar. Felt solar was an expense i didn't need. I can also recharge the batteries from AC in six hours or less, depending how much i drain them. For cold weather and running a heater, i will require using my 120 V AC hookup, same for summer heat to run the AC unit.

    Awesome. I have the same truck but with the roll-up back door. I am going to remove that and put in a solid wall with small access doors for tire etc. I was also thinking about solar panels on the roof and maybe a combo cassette toilet/shower. With the price of solar and lithium batteries getting affordable, I will probably go with that.

    Looks great, you obviously have a knack for conversions. Only criticism is the size of the water heater, my Tiger motorhome, of a similar size, has a 3 gallon heater. I find even that to be a lot, space being what it is. I have never wished I had a larger tank. I hang coats in the shower.

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  8 років тому

      +vidguy007 Hi, thanks for the comments. I started to purchase a 3 gallon, but since in the past i had a Chinook that had a six gallon, that made me lean to the six, you are probably right i could have gone with a 3. I am finding that my showers take 8 to 10 gallons of water, not sure how much of that is the hot water. Thanks again!

    Nice job on your camper. I am at the point of thinking about doing something similar, but I will have to work on a budget. So I will probably end up with an older truck (thinking an old rental unit with the FRP box). I have seen those flight line service trucks and passed one up a few years ago. A few questions I have are concerning cutting the FRP, windows, etc. If you had to cut the FRP what sort of blade did you use? Where did you source your windows and side door (if they weren't already installed)? Have thoughts about putting a couple of solar panels on the roof and setting up a battery bank? Did you look into a tankless hot water heater for your shower & sink? Did you consider an RV generator (the type that mounts under the body)? Did you also insulate the side walls and floor? Finally, where did you mount your fresh water and gray water holding tanks? I will try to look at your build video(s), so if there are anythings that asked that you covered, don't worry about replying. Thanks!

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  8 років тому

      Thanks for your response. Yes, lots to think about if you want to build it out from scratch. In my case the Door and Windows were already there, I didn't cut the FRP at all. These walls are a plywood, fiberglass, gel coat combination, so probably a fine tooth wood blade would work well. Check www.supremecorp.com they made the box. Decided i would focus on camping were i would have 120 VAC so didn't add the cost for Solar. Tankless water heater is a good idea, i didn't consider it when i built. No space for a generator, however, i have been considering a Honda EU3000i Handi unit, which will be a good fit to run my AC if needed. Just cant seem to commmit on it until i decide i need to be off grid. I did not insulate the walls, only the roof. The wood fiberglass gel coat combo doesn't conduct the cold or heat, only metal items primarily. I find this unit holds heat just as well as an insulated one, once you fire up a heater. You see that i only set up a grey tank for the shower. Toilet, i use www.thetraveltoilet.com for my needs, no tank cleaning. I have 11 videos in all you can watch, check the channel site and follow the Playlist. Thanks for your interest!

    • @kevinbaker6168
      @kevinbaker6168 8 років тому

      The RV generators I am thinking about would take about the same amount of room as your grey water tank does under the body, Probably less in length. Some are made to run off deisel, gasoline or propane. So if you wanted you could fit an electric in line pump and tie it into your current engine fuel line. The only other issue would be to vent the exhaust up and along side of the body or far enough away from it so you don't end up with carbon monoxide in the camper unit. Once again, nice little camper.

    Very nice looking build, thanks for the walkthrough!
    Two questions:
    1) what are the walls made from? need to locate metal ribs to anchor things?
    2) where do you store the drain hose for grey tank that it dries out and doesn't get other stuff wet?

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  8 років тому

      +BradKW Hi and thanks for the comments! Walls are an outer gelcoat much like a boat, with a 1/2 inch plywook that is again covered in a fiberglass on the inside. Altogether it is about 5/8' thick. very much like RVs that use gelcoat shells on top plywood. I primarily anchored the bed and all the portions below it using wheel wells , along with using the butyl tape i also used for the shower basin. I did anchor the cabinet to the wall with some screws, and also used the butyl tape to hold it to the wall, and also on the metal floor, beyond that no other anchoring. did not use any additional ribs of any kind on the walls, but as i mentioned used the wheel wells as brace points using 12",2" beams.
      As for the drain hose, i keep it in the grey bucket that is shown on the back, just in front of the spare tire. has a lid to keep in smell. However as i only have a grey tank, i don't really have a smell issue.

    great build ! would a inverter generator meet your electric needs if you don't have AC access ?

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  9 років тому +1

      +gary mathews Thanks Gary! Yes, I have been looking at a 3000 watt generator, either a Honda or a Yamaha, which would run the AC unit. I am going to wait a bit longer and see if i can do without it. Adding it will require me to setup a carrier on the back or pull a small trailer. i am considering both, so the main decision is how often will i be in a camping place that won't have electric hookups. There are so many now that for the $1800 to $2500 i would spend on a generator, i could spend 60 to 80 nights in a full hookup place. Haven't ruled it out yet.

    Wow that is a great use of space! Nice work. Just wanted to point out that the drawer in the back that you have the blue strap on, if you did slam on the brakes there looked to be about 3 feet of slack on the blue strap. The drawer might gain a lot of momentum and snap the strap. Maybe you should tighten it to have no slack when you travel.

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  8 років тому

      Hi Audioholic, Thanks for the compliments on my video. Regarding your suggestion on the strap, i have since implemented another solution that avoids the drawer moving at all when travelling. If you check out this video which follows the others you will see how i used some standard door latches to lock the drawer in place while travelling, and it cannot move at all. Check it out and thanks for watching! This link includes the latches: ua-cam.com/video/-bFy3dFNGjM/v-deo.html

    Amazing Build Mate! This Is Perfect. I Have To Ask The Model Of The Truck Used Here? What Class License You Need To Drive It. Also Do The Come In Longer Sizes. Id Like To Compliment One I Can Make Room In Back For A Motercycle And Also A Sink Real Toilet And Washer Dryer Combo. I Was Thinking A 16ft or A 15ft. Also What Do You Pull Off MPG? Did You Install The Windows? I Would Love To Get Ahold Of You Had A Cupple Questions. Cheers!!

      +Destin Romeo Yo! Destin! Sorry for the delayed response, i have been away a few days. Thanks for the compliments! I'll answer some of your questions tonight and the rest tomorrow.
      The truck is a Ford E-350 Cutaway 5.4L engine, with a 10 foot Box on the back. Here in the USA, a standard Class C License is all that is required. The manufacturer of the box is a company called Supreme. Check out their web site. supremecorp.com/
      You can get these pretty much made to order from Supreme, so yes, multiple lengths. a 16 foot would be nice and gives 6 feet more than what i have. Width will likely be 84 inches inside, but you can check with Supreme. I am getting 11.3 MPG when i am driving 65 mph. All the windows came with it and were installed by Supreme. This unit was sold to a US Goverment org, that used rarely for 7 years then auctioned it off. Lucky find for me!
      Send me questions via my email if you want, r2jordan@comcast.net maybe we can do a call also. Subscribe and check out all of my videos. AM preparing one, i am soundproofing the cab, did the floor already, will do the ceiling and doors this weekend. Thanks,

    Awesome build! I was interested in a high top van but when I do the measurements, its not wide enough for what I want to create. This solves everything! What is the gas mileage. Also what are the measurements in the box area? PS Your tour was very informative. Thanks a lot.

    • @ottodiezel
      @ottodiezel  6 років тому

      Hi Peggy, and thanks for watching! I also looked at vans and came to the same conclusion, i needed more width and a square box truck is easier to install interior items, than the contours of a van. Gas mileage for my truck, a 5.4L V8 is 10.5 to 11 mpg doing 65 on the highway. The box area for my truck, is 10 feet front to back, 84 " wide, and 70 " high. I only installed a single wide bed, but would need to remove the shower to install a double wide bed. If you go with a 12 foot truck box, you could do all i did and also get a double wide bed in the back. Thanks for the compliments and for watching! Questions any time!

      Hey Bill,
      I had an extra load spring added by an off road group that stabilized the weight distribution and gave it a bit of a softer ride. My AGMs were from West Marine, Group 27 Dual-Purpose AGM Battery, 92 Amp Hours. I only put one solar panel on top, 100 watt panel, only for AGM charging when i was on the road.
