Great episode as always. It's nice to see other channels presenting news from their respective regions as well. Those Ontario Northland Charger sets look amazing, and represent the luxury that every passenger train deserves, even the smaller ones. (Basically the modern equivalent of the Pennsylvania Railroad's streamlined doodlebug [4663], in which even smaller branch lines receive high end streamlined railcars.)

When the Northlander was suspended, the Tempos were assigned to the Polar Bears... The return of the Northlander with new Siemens equipment is what surprised me (probably everyone), probably the best equipment since the old Trans Europ Express hand me downs?
125MPH certified set on the ONR where it will be limited to 80mph? 60mph? I think ONR should also fight for grants on track and signaling where ONR will run instead of just the sets...
Anyway, some used LRCs to complement the Tempos on the Polar Bear Express would be cool, too.

However, I will be diving deeper into some NorCal stuff in the future. Sorry to all of you that live in NorCal, nothing against you. And, I’ll have better acoustics when I record that.

The F59PHRs should be called "Tow Truck II" to pay homage to their predecessor in the same role, F40PH 800!! The F59PHRs are now unarguably doing the EXACT SAME THING SCAX 800 did when it was in service, transit rescue. The problems are many with Canada's "High FREQUNCY Rail" (NOT High SPEED), but the four major problems with it are:
    1) It can't be compared to the US' Northeast Corridor (NEC) because the new route avoids populated areas to the south, thereby drastically reducing potential ridership.
    2) It can't be compared to the US' NEC because it will be high frequency, not high speed. This is in part because the abandoned rail route to be taken has areas of unstable bog on the Canadian Shield which would make high speed rail either impossible or even, if resolvable, extremely expensive to build. The government has shown no interest in spending what it would take to remedy the situation, if even fixable.
    3) The project, as proposed will tie up huge amounts of money, with limited impact and will discourage investment elsewhere in a country with a very large land mass.
    4) As proposed, the project will be done outside of VIA, putting the future of VIA very much in doubt.

    • @ChasmChaos

For point 3, doesn't 50% of Canada's population live in the Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto greater metropolitan areas? I'm not saying proper planning for a good ROI is unwarranted, but looking at land area instead of population is a poor way to think about making railways great again.

It's not meant to replace the current line, but supplement it, at a higher frequency and run like a European passenger mainline (it's likely DB will build and operate the line)

So the Avelia sets are two years away from repairs so they can get started, the Airo train sets are defective already and years behind and millions of cost overruns, the Charger engines have big screens on the side that fill up with snow and stall, and Siemens passenger cars are still stored awaiting something in Chicago. Meanwhile, California still doesn't have any track or a fix for the sinking valley floor that makes catenary impossible.
Terrible year for Amtrak, and the Superliners are being replaced with no double deck design so that means more Siemens cars that don't work. Wonderful.

I can see Mexico being a likely customer once the delivery time is not too long. A better trainset to start to at least offer would be a dual power locomotive that could use electrified lines and switch to fuel where its not economic yet to upgrade. This meets carbon ideals without having to have the electrification completed for what may still be a low riding line that was harder to justify. It may also mean no all of the line needs overhead lines (tunnels, sea coasts etc). We have just ordered battery-electric locomotives for our region so they can run on electric before the line electrification is needed to be fully complete.
