    If the MBTA starts going electric via catenaries then they should consider leasing or buying the ACS locomotives from Amtrak since those will be phased out with the new ALC-42E/Venture car combos in the coming years.

      Amtrak will still retain the majority of acs-64s if not all. Some of the new trains will still be pulled by an acs-64 when they are only scheduled for under the wire service such as keystone trains (no need for a diesel alc-42e for those types of schedules) and the long distance trains that travel on the NEC will still need an acs-64.

      @@MrStark-up6fi Question, why the ALP-46 over the ACS-64s? I don’t know what is different between the two other than the ALP-46 is NJT while the ACS is used by Amtrak/someone else I think.

    Luckily a lot of MA politicians have pushed back against battery trains recently and many have stated they’ll only support full overhead electrification. That being said, the bill is VERY ambitious for electrification to be implemented by 2024 at earliest. Even if the MBTA ordered/leased electric locos or EMUs within the next year or so, the T lacks any yards or facilities that could receive or maintain electric rolling stock… the MBTA would have already needed to have invested heavily into electrification if it were to meet the bill’s deadlines…

    • @senorspahrtan
      @senorspahrtan Рік тому +2

      @@powgames I definitely agree Siemens probably won’t be taking on another massive order like this. I would hope Amtrak/Via Rail would look at successful long distance train designs from other countries, exactly like the NightJet. Would keep costs low and bring an already known product in quickly. I do wonder if they want to stick to the double deck design or go with single levels so the cars could be used system wide.

    • @MatthiasWiesmann
      @MatthiasWiesmann Рік тому +2

      @@senorspahrtan Most long distance trains outside of the US are high-speed EMUs. The only exception being night trains. In general, passenger service is increasingly handled by multiple-units which have the advantage of better acceleration (more powered axles), and better boarding capacity: you don't loose station platform capacity because of a locomotive. So building carriages is niche market, and as the US is already pretty niche, there is not so much competition.

    I would guess that for the new long-distance rail cars for Amtrak and Via Siemens will also be the manufacturer since Siemens has built strong relationships with both of Amtrak and Via while also being the only big train/rail car manufacturer out there currently working on and building new-modern state of the art sleeper Cars (for reference look at the new Nightjets in Austria). Furthermore, if I'm not mistaken Siemens thinks about further investments in North America and therefore maybe we could see an expansion of the existing or the establishment of a new plant making headaches about the manufacturing capacity of Siemens more or less redundant (maybe a few more orders, like exactly those we are talking about is exactly what Siemens needs as a reason for bigger Investments in North America).

Light rail is already putting them leagues ahead of NYC and Boston, yet they’re really in no position to complain about easier travel. Kind of head scratcher if you ask me. 🤷‍♂️

      @@froztytrainfilms9148 I would love that. They're already setting themselves up to be a great TriRail competitor. They'd have Tampa to themselves. A good start would be from wherever their downtown station is, past the TPA, over the bay (the new bridge they're putting in has space for rail) to PIE, then to a Y that goes north and south between Clearwater and St Pete. I'm no urban planner, but I've lived here long enough to know where the biggest need is lol.

      As I understand, Brightline is more likely to upgrade it's 4-car trains to 7-car (or maybe longer), which would possibly require both Chargers (which are also less powerful than Amtrak) to get to 125mph with decent acceleration and still having enough head-end power. So I think we might sooner see additional (standard) Venture cars than cab cars.

    You keep saying that Brightline's extension is at "125mph". But it's literally only a tiny 20 mile section of 125mph track out of the more than 235 mile overall Brightline route. If a dish is less than 10% sandwich and more than 90% manure, do you still classify that as a sandwich?
    Most of the extension could run at 110mph, if and only if they can get the approval to run at that speed with Brightline's atrocious safety record. But if they keep crushing a car per week for the foreseeable future that even that might not happen!

      I'm quite a railfan myself, yet I must admit that you make a good point! If I were one of the MTA guys, I would have, at the very least, used DMUs instead of EMUs for the IBX. After all, that would allow for both IBX and freight trains to run on the same line _without_ needing to build an electric line over the current line. That's exactly what San Bernardino did with their _Arrow_ last year, and what Texas is doing with the current TEXRail and future Silver Line! Why isn't MTA thinking of using this cost-saving method?

      @@SleepTrain456 It's not cheaper! We can use a side track for freight to allow for them to (mostly) use the same line. Electric is cheaper in the long run, and the MTA committed to using electric for whatever mode they'd use. Everyone would trash a DMU regional rail in NYC, and electric commuter rail and freight CAN mix.

      @@collectivelyimprovingtrans2460 Thanks for the feedback! Now that you mention it, there isn't much diesel in NYC!
      Also, you're right! Not only can electric commuter rail mix with diesel freight rail, but it already does! Just ask the New York and Atlantic Railway: it is a freight railroad operating on LIRR tracks!
      Maybe the LIRR could just run passenger trains on the Bay Ridge Branch. After all, that's just what they did until 1924. Thanks for the idea!
