Thank you for your hard work populating bees! When we move to NC in a few years we plan on getting a few hives. My hubby is itching to start bee keeping since his uncle and good friend started a few years ago.

I'm glad your bees survived the winter. Mine did too this time. One thing I had trouble with was small hive beetles. In a strong colony the bees can keep them in check but it the colony is weak for any reason, the small hive beetles can decimate it. I lost one hive that way. I think the bees got into some pesticide somewhere and lost a lot of workers and then the beetles just wreaked havoc. I put a trap in the other one and they recovered.

What I would do with the first one you opened is later on to move the frames that are empty towards the center, moving one space at a time for them to fill up and work all of the frames. It seems like they are going upwards instead of sideways, so you kind of force them to work and use that space. What I do to help them during winter is that I never leave empty spaces like you do. The feeders are in a whole empty space in contact with the brood area. Maybe if you use an inner lid with the holes for the feeders and then place the empty supper on top of it and then the lid would help control better the inner temperature of the beehive.

Have a question to ask? I just looked at my hives, I have three. When I opened them up to check out they survived the winter, I found a lot of dead bees. I saw no eggs laid, plenty of honey. I did find the queen. Will they do ok, it is the 26th of March.
I'd like to see how you get honey out of the hives and bottle it.
