  • Join me as I show you how to make waffles using a cast iron antique waffle iron. In this video I have a #9 Griswold #316-317-318 made in 1908. My GoPro camera stopped recording as I was pouring the 1st two waffles, but at 12.00 in the video, you can see me pour the last waffle with the improved batter as I improvised during the video with a new recipe! I apologize for my camera, but if I waited for things to be perfect, you would never see this video! I hope you enjoy the process because it obviously worked in the end or I wouldn't be sharing it with you now! Thanks for watching and go make it a great day!

    WOW. We had Krusteze waffles this morning on our Wagner #8 and here is the lady making them today on UA-cam.
    These waffle irons are much better than the electric ones.
    Thanks for the excellent video.

      LOL Ernest! Isn't that the best pancake/waffle mix ever? Pretty healthy and tastes great too. I absolutely love this waffle iron and the waffles are just so flavorful and crispy in comparison to regular waffles cooked on electric waffle irons! I totally agree with you and thanks for your kind words! :-)

    I have a six inch with a high collar that I absolutely love. The low collar was for wood stoves. They manufactured a higher collar after gas stoves became popular . The higher collar enables the waffle iron to be flipped over without striking the burner. On a wood stove the low collar worked because when the eye was removed the waffle iron could be flipped over the hole without lifting the iron.

      Yes, this is a great waffle iron, but is best over a gas stove or electric coils due to the constant flipping. I stopped using to avoid scratching my counter top. I have since made low carb waffles using a traditional waffle iron, which I would suppose you could use on this one as well. The Griswold is great though, especially for a collection!

    I have a 6 in Waffle maker. The collar for this one is the low collar for a wood burning stove. The high collar was developed when gas stoves came to market. The high collar allows for the waffle iron to easily be rotated with out lifting to turn over.

    I own a #7 Griswold circa 1880 waffle iron with the original wood peg handles and its spin cradle. But mine a bit cruder looking and doesn't have the cool looking Griswold cross logo in the center like yours. It only has "The American" cast in the center ring. But I still enjoy using it and it makes some amazing waffles!

    As a kid the part of making waffles I thought was the most fun was folding in the whipped egg whites. Have not done that in decades, otherwise a very long-long time ago. My topping of choice was strawberry jam and sometimes a dollop of softened vanilla ice cream and it still is my favorite today. …………. Many times after watching you make something I end up making it also within a few days and them I eat to much. ……….. I still have about a half of a Large Pot of chili in the fridge because of you --- and it turned out Great ……. I plan on freezing most of what's left in single serve portions for later. YUM

      Awesome to hear that car ko - that the chili was great, not that you ate too much! lol :-( That chili rocks if you include my secret ingredients. If you miss either one, man you KNOW something is missing! It makes a great meal for a rushed heat & eat night once you thaw it out! As to the waffles, adding some extra mix with the 1 TBSP of oil seemed to do the trick. Also letting it "rest" once put together for about 20 minutes should help on the thickness as well. I didn't have the luxury of waiting as I was in the middle of the video. You can see me ladle it out at 12:00 into the waffle iron and it was the best one yet! Thanks again for stopping and your kind words!

    I was lucky enough to get No. 9 Griswold waffle maker on Ebay today... it doesn't have the lower base though. Is the base useful if you are using a modern gas stove with a big sized burner?

    • @ladylibertystacker2014
      @ladylibertystacker2014  Рік тому

      The low base is meant for electric coiled stoves or smooth tops on which it can sit and the paddles be rotated. The high base is meant for gas stove tops to allow room for the flame underneath the paddles. You can find one on eBay or if you search the internet, but it might not be easy. This is if you can't use as is. Hope this helps.

    Hey! I have a question. A local antique store of mine has a #9 going for $150, do you think that’s a good deal ? Most of them I see online usually go for a little higher, thanks!

    • @ladylibertystacker2014
      @ladylibertystacker2014  9 місяців тому

      I guess it just depends on the condition it is. If I have to strip and reseason, then I would expect to pay less than this. I guess it all depends on what the market is doing as far as sold prices. The best way to know is to check eBay listings, sold prices to get an idea!

    Adding both tablespoonfuls of oil would gave helped thicken it. Leaving it sit 20 minutes or more would be better.
    Putting the waffles on a cooling tray inside a sheet pan in a low temp oven will help keep them crisper as you make the rest of the batter.

    • @ladylibertystacker2014
      @ladylibertystacker2014  4 роки тому +1

      Actually, adding extra mix helped a whole lot. If you watched to 12:00 in the video, I actually was able to get a shot of pouring in the thickened batter for the 3rd waffle I made. I have done your oven tip but I had been seasoning skillets in the oven and they were still in the oven at the time I made this video. As to letting it sit, I have heard that tip before and it might have helped in this instance as well, but when you're making a requested video for UA-cam and using a new recipe to boot, I didn't think the batter would be that runny until I made it "live" on camera. Next time, I will add a little extra mix keeping the oil at 1 TBSP and allowing it to sit before making the waffles. Actually, the oil helps with the waffles coming right off the iron without sticking at all and they were very crispy enough for us! Anyway, it is what it is. Thanks for watching.

    • @ladylibertystacker2014
      @ladylibertystacker2014  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, you should! They made the higher base for gas ranges so the paddles wouldn't smack the stove grate every time you need to flip the paddle.

      Thank you chesh! Now for your question - do you mean the weight of the actual waffle iron? Based on my #8 Favorite Piqua Ware Cast Iron Waffle maker that sold (it was about 8.5 lbs), this one weighs between 9-10 pounds or so. It is slightly bigger than the #8 I had and the handles are longer. It makes great waffles and I am glad I bought it to restore. :-)

      Thanks and glad you enjoyed this video! The batter was a bit thin as I was making the video, so I added more mix which seemed to do the trick and if you watched to at least 12:00 in the video, I pour in that batter. In my opinion, that is the best consistency for the best waffles. Another suggestion is to make the batter ahead of time, let it "rest" for about 20-30 minutes so it can thicken, then make your waffles. Good luck! I hope your neighbors are watching your porch. I would hate for your package to get legs and go for a walk! lol
