I can remember spending hours at this mall back in the late 80’s early 90’s. As a young boy I would be camped out at Aladdin’s Castle arcade while my mother and sister were shopping..
I loved Aladdin’s Castle (arcade) that was next to McDonalds-they had a ball pit/play area even though it was in the mall! I had the best time as a kid eating at McDonalds and then running to the arcade next to it to play games. My brother ran away from Elementary school once when he was in the 4th grade to go to Aladdin’s Castle and he spent his lunch money playing games. Cops came to school and everyone thought he was kidnapped, and we found him walking back to school just as the search party was about to commence. That was back in 2000. Oh, memories. 🥲 RIP big bro. Also, there was an old fashion ice cream bar cart that was badass back then too. Thanks for reading.
In the late 80s my girlfriend worked at Robinson's. I used to go in there and look at a Seiko diver's watch I wanted so bad, it was $325 in 1988 dollars. It's still in production so I'm going to buy it in September for my 17 year old self that never got it, for nostalgia's sake. I lived at 156th and Hawthorne across from the McDonalds, and walked to the mall all the time.
I remember in the 1980s I visited in Delamo fashion center. I actually flew down from the bay area and what was then either air cow or a PSA either to Burbank Glendale airport or LAX and took a bus down to the Alamo and I remember that Orbaek store and just how huge the mall was those were the days. Thanks for the video.
The old Del Amo was much better. I remember as my Family lived in Gardena area in the 80's. Late 80's thru mid 90's were my favorite years. The Mc Donalds and Arcade downstairs is were we would hang out. Unfortunately it's no longer the fun place that it use to be. Best of memories.
I remember Aladdin's castle too, but honestly the Sega Center in the Carson Mall was my hangout, I had a membership there and would get monthly discounted token coupons (Still have a couple tokens). Does anyone remember the excellent game store (1999) on the 2nd level south of the food court - they had huge board game collection probably 30-40 different chess sets & Pokemon when they 1st came out?
Hahaha...I was part of the 1st generation of the 80s Mall Rat here. I had a friend who worked as a security guard there. He let me take a peek of the blueprints when they decided to connect both malls together!!! I got to memorize all the storage units, secret routes and exits lol....good times. It was a prestigious title of being the world's biggest mall. Good times...thanks again Eric
Hung out there every weekend back in the day (late 70's - early 80's). Valley Girls and Fast Times at Ridgemont High were filmed there. It use to be the most amazing mall in the world!!! Its complete garbage now. But oh the memories will last forever.
How about "Toy World," a bit of the sign is seen at 3:08 at the upper left. My family started shopping there starting around 1962, I then took my kids there years back and now I take my grandson there. Many malls are closing but Del Amo seems to keep pretty much busy. Really miss the Sears, I always bought my "Craftsman" tools there. Wish there were more places to buy coffee besides starbucks -- ugh...... The South Bay Galleria 8:21 is now less than a shadow of its former self. Thanks for posting.
Did there used to be an arcade in this mall at the bottom of the escalators? I seem to remember a lot of blue neon light and a big arcade on the bottom level.
Great video I remember the old del amo mall from 25 years ago Aladdins Castle, Mc Donnalds Play place, Taco Bell, Sam Goody, walking down the hall to get to TJ Max, Sears, Kings Table Buffet, and the best food court cafe lot was Del amo Steak Sandwich, and the prices not bad back then as they are with today's food court and Restaurant. I'm 32 now and I still enjoy it now but not as good as it was 20 years ago. Lucilles BBQ, Lazy Dog, Din tai Fung and the Bazil dine in Nordstrom is great to dine in and eat.
Great Work on this video. Never yet been to this Mall, but would any sections of Del Amo filmed in Jackie Brown still be recognizable❓️🤔 Beautiful Mall both before and after the Renovation. Thank You. 😎🌴👍🏻
Living in Long Beach at the time, I used to go there every Saturday at 10 am and spend the entire day until it was closing (sometimes at 5:00 Pm or 8:30 Pm) time throughout the 90s! I really miss the way it used to look like. Not a fan of the way it is after the recent remodeling.
I worked at Bullock's Del Amo in the early 80s and it was a beautiful store. Nordstrom's is the closest equivalent but Bullock's was superior. It was a popular mall and Del Amo was one of Bullock's top stores. I remember when it was two separate malls. There was also a Joesph Magnin store. Was it across the street from I. Magnin? Who remembers Bob's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Bars and the nut counter at Sears? I don't remember Desmonds or Silverwoods. Where were they located? I would be fun to see a directory and layout of the stores through the years. Thanks for the memories Eric!
My Mom would take my Bro and myself shopping as babies, then kids. I remember the Lollipop stand w/ those huge colorful, swirly patterns, and we each got one if we behaved😊. You can still remember the popcorn,Iceies( cherry original flavor, then the Blue Raspberry that came later!! Nuts, candies, big Pretzels.... And you could see everything before they remodeled Sears. The windows let the natural light in!!😊
Back in the 60s and 70s the mall was closed on Sundays and that's when my dad would teach me how to drive in the very expansive parking lot. The Sears store had the best burgers, too.
One of my first jobs in college was at that mall! Memories! I'm so glad the original food court lives on in "Jackie Brown"- I LOVE that DinTaiFung. Whatever happened to the clock tower? It was huge and overlooked the entrance (now near Joanns). The Ohrbach's is now a Mitsuwa, a Japanese grocery store and food court, but we also remember it as STØR!
@@roxannegarcia6559 reg the large clock that was in the middle of the store near the entrance? I remember a watch a shoe place or something inside. And Jean coffee was up 2 floor that is gone now. There coffee was Great.
Great job Eric C. I was there today. I am usually there every week. I was there during the earlier years as a youth. So much has changed. I was there the last day Sears was open. It is an empty shell today. Marshalls is in the place near the old inside mall sears entrance. Dave and Busters came in right before the pandemic. On the far end where all the renovation took place, it is like Rodeo drive in many spots. You were very detailed. Thank you, stay blessed.
Thanks Eric for the great memories, In the mid 60's, I was about 9 or 10 my friends and I would walk about 2 miles to the mall on the weekends. I wonder if anyone else remembers the old man who played the accordion by Sears on the weekends
Thanks for posting this! I worked at an ad agency literally within walking distance of Sears. Lots of great memories walking over to the mall on lunch breaks or after work. Nice job on the video. We also used to go to King’s Hawaiian Bakery & restaurant down the street for lunch/dinner frequently. I thought you already cut a video on King’s? I’ll search and scroll. If not…maybe a suggestion for a future video? As always, keep up the great work.
Sad to see that Sears is gone. Many memories of years gone by. Is it possible that you can do a video on the Rolling Hills plaza area during the 1960's and prior.
In the 80s my mom would take me shopping for new clothes at the Broadway for back to school. I remember their life-sized Santa Clause decorations every Holiday season and I miss the old food court with the DQ. My friends and I would often watch movies at the UA cinema inside the mall. This mall was already starting to get dated and declining in customer traffic by the late 90s especially the northside of the mall. Then when Broadway closed the southside began declining too. To this day the southside is the "deadest" part of the mall on most days and the most outdated looking part while the liveliest is at the northside since that part of the mall underwent a major overhaul and revitalization with its outdoor lifestyle court.
Now...that's debatable. My guess is that if more people who are decent and don't attack others go and OVERWHELM the mall on weekends, maybe the nice people will outnumber and "baddies" as my Mom used to say!😉Bas people can be anywhere when they ignore their conscience. There's nice people there and for the most part it is good!
The troubled youths who aided in the demise of The Hawthorne Mall and the depopulation of the South Bay Galleria are now doing their best to kill Del Amo. Real sad.
I miss the old Del Amo mall😢period.

It is now an utterly BORING white- washed place. Looks like a MORGUE with signs and fixtures to me!! Miss the old times...😢

They had some kickass gocarts at one point. That gor replaced by the best arcade I've ever seen. Jackie Brown was the last I've seen of the place.
