I found the CVT plug out AGAIN, then a clogged CVT vent. I went to youtube and found your video. And then, I found the fill bolt was missing! Thank you for the camera work and explanation!
Got quoted $225.13 for this today at my local honda service center, I said I'd only do it if they gave me a pound of whatever they were smoking, thanks for the tutorial sir!
My sister quote was 436.00$ 😂😂
@@albertvidal956 i dont know how they sleep at night charging something like that, hopefully well on their goose feather mattress, royal satin sheets, and gold plated bed frames.
I just got a quote for my wife car they told her that she needed brake, transmission, and power steering fluid changed. the price was a little over $750.00
It’s not even that, i don’t mind paying but I don’t trust these incompetent fools they got working at the dealership doing it correctly.
That is actually a great price. Anywhere in NY that’s a $400+ dealership job.
Great video, but just a note. At 7:47 you state to pull the fill plug before removing the drain plug. That's great, but be aware that instead of glugging out, the fluid will come out like Niagara Falls so move your drain pan way over accordingly. Trust me on this.
Thanks for posting this! Great attention to pointing out all the details and very helpful!
Great video with the closeups, good camera angles, and most important , lighting.
Much appreciated!
I will be doing this soon as I am nearing 40K on my 2019 CRV EX. Thanks for the video! 😎
What a great video, thank you!
The "large multi use funnel" from Walmart is what I purchased and it seemed to match what you had. Perfect fit.
I had to use around 4.8 qt of hcf-2 in my AWD before my check opening began to overflow. I read elsewhere that can happen.
Thank you so much
I have 2021. Cr- v. 25000 miles
I will replace.
Your video very clear. Very. Good.
very detailed video! exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much :)
Thanks for watching!
Excellent advice
And awesome epoxy garage floor.
Thank you for this tutorial. You may want to update this to reflect that this is only applicable to 1.5L engines, not the 2.4L LX models. On those, the plug and fill port are directly under the water outlet that goes to the lower radiator hose.
Hi, Thank you for your input! I say that this is for the 1.5L turbo in the video description 🤗 Thanks for watching!
Right on dude. Super easy to follow.
Great tutorial! I was just going to change the cvt fluid but after seeing this I’m going to whole thing! Ty
If this is your first time changing, I would measure the fluid that came out to double check to see if it's close to the recommended 3.9q fill capacity. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the check plug since you will need to check it at a certain transmission temperature because of thermo-expansion of the fluid unless you know what your doing with the diagnostic tool.
It’s a CVT. Drain and fill. No worries about expansion. Fill cold until it runs out. Automatic transmissions now need to be checked by temperature!
Yes I drained just about exactly 5 quarts that`s why I don`t understand why they say 4.5 Quarts...Mine is AWD THANKS
@@Tom-ej8bb Can you add HCF2 compatible fluid inside? Would it perform well together?
@@Woodland26 you can use anything compatible. Just read the back of the container. Valvoline, STP, amsoil, eneos, etc etc etc are all companies with CVT fluids compatible with HCF-2.
@Tom-ej8bb I have a 2015 crv and, I drained trans, put plug back, put 5 full quarts of hcf2 honda fluid, pulled the overflow to let the extra 1/2 quart out but nothing came out ??
Great Job 👏🏼 Thanks for the Helpful Video. I only have 2 jack stands. Is 3.9 qts the correct amount ? I can’t use the top off check bolt with the car uneven
Just drive it, 400,000 km and still going strong here
can you do a video on how to clean the crv throttle body
Thanks so much! Truly appreciate the detailed video, just got done changing the fluid on mine😊. Take care!
Well done, such a clear presentation!
Great job explaining the process!
Did u change the transmission filter
I also don't see any tutorials with people changing this.
There are two of them. One in the warmer and one in the drain pan. They are considered "lifetime filters".
Very helpful. Thank you, you just saved me a bunch of money.
Thank you. Great video. Good to know the set up under there before I get there. I like to use Genuine Honda transmission fluid for my Hondas.
Hi please can you tell, I changed using check bolt method on cold engine. Will there be any damage? I didn't run the engine to make the transmission and engine hot temperature then drain and fill the oil, should I do it again?
How often do I need to change the transmission fluid?
One of the best/most informative video for the crv thanks for the details.
Great video.
@@michaelbeever4054 thanks!
What will happen if you use all 4 qts….Will 3 oz really hurt anything?
Probably not
Nah honestly it won’t and you could probably just dump all 4 all call it a day. Many reports of the factory over filling it to 4.5-4.7 qrts or under filling it like mines and only 3.3 qtrs came out. Extreme overfilling would be like 5qrts +
Amsoil Cvt fluid is outstanding!
Wow, as easy as an oil change. Question, Is that crush washer the same size as the one on the oil drain plug? And does a ratchet extension fit onto that drain plug? Or some large allen wrenck? Ty
Trans drain plug and engine oil drain plug are different sizes
Ours loves Amsoil CVT fluid.
Did you do a complete flush or drain and fill?
@cosmic_kid2868doesn’t matter if you mix it 😂 , it’s already has old fluid still in there that’s staying and keeping things intake , you just replace it with the better fluid 😂
@cosmic_kid2868 done it plenty of times with 6 speeds auto transmission from Chevy , 6 speeds auto from Mazda , nothing wrong and it loved every minute of the new transmission fluid , if new transmission fluid and mixing it didn’t kill a transmission I don’t think it’s killing a cvt lol
And you forget there’s still old fluid in the case that’s being stored and can’t be drained out unless you disassemble it
@ and you’re recommending a flush which is harmful to the transmission…. Everyone has done a drain and fill with different fluid , it’s bad if you’re mixing the oil from different brands when doing the drain and fill
How many cvt have you replace the fluid on
@cosmic_kid2868 oh I will buddy don’t worry lol , I’ll find a video real quick to debunk this myth of yours lol
thanks for this video, it's very helpful. i have a 2018 crv awd that needs transmission fluid change, and this helps. also can anyone explain why you need to change the crush washer? the old one, tho it may be compressed from use, still looks pretty good and it seems like it could be re-used. just my opinion
What are the part numbers for the filter and o-rings?
Where do you find the dipstick to measure the transmission oil? I have a Honda ceviche 2019
Transmission dipsticks are fairly rare post 2010, especially on FWD/AWD vehicles. Most new Transmissions are like whats shown in the video or just a fill and drain plugs like manual Transmissions.
Do these have a small filter on one of the sides? I have a Nissan and it does and I know some Honda automatics had something like that too. With that said it seems to be something that may be common on Japanese vehicles. There usually still is the one in the pan that you can't always get to easily too and I hear that one on Hondas is a real pain to get at.
Yes. I made a video on how to change the filters on the 2017-2022 CR-V CVT. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/QK8BkX451CE/v-deo.html
Great video if you could do one on coolant change for this vehicle it would be most helpful
Thanks! I’m sure in the future I’ll be doing that job to this car.
Hello, what are the torque spec. for the drain, fill check bolts for your '17 CR-V? Thank You. Like your video!!! 👍👍
My mechanic says my 2017 awd crv needs a transfer case fluid service. Any advice on this?
do it ,you don't want that blowing up ,
Honda Oils are made by Warren Oil they produce for most house brands , Mobil 1 knocks every other brand out of the water
So get Mobil 1 ?
How do you know when to change the transmission fluid? My car smells like rotten eggs when started.
What size is the check crush washer for the transmission bolt ? 14 mm for the oil drain I believe.
90471-PW7-A00 - check bolt washer
@@spencersgarage is it 10mm or 14mm?
Hey how do we check if the dealer made the transmission flush if my CRV 21 don't have the stick?
Drain Plug Torque - 36lbft
Hi, what kind of floor jack did you use (how many tons, brand name)? Where did you buy it? Thanks!
OTC 1533 "80th anniversary edition" aluminum racing jack lifts two tons. It was a gift from my wife.
is the crush washer the same for the drain plug and the overflow plug?
Drain plug washer 18mm
They are different sizes.
What is the one to use for the check plug washer?
Thank you so much! Well done video! QUESTION: Do you know if the AWD transmission looks the same as the FWD? I'm able to change the fluid in my wife's 2017 AWD CR-V and I'm wondering if the drain plug, and level check bolt are in the same location. Do you know?
Thanks! The plugs are in the same location.
@@spencersgarage Thank you!
Hi, nice video....did you change transfer case fluid ?
This is a FWD model.
Great video. Thank you. Just did the first drain and fill on my daughter’s 2020 cr-v. Plan on changing both the filters next time around, and I know where I can find a great video for that also! You are very thorough. I really appreciate torque specs. To me that’s the sign of a good quality video! In the past, I always bought the factory service manual for all my cars, but it seems like nowadays that is impossible. It is people like you on UA-cam that give us the knowledge to continue to work on our vehicles and avoid costly dealer fees. Keep up the good work! Just curious, where did you learn the procedure?
I jest changd mine and it was black (sorry) It looks nice and clear coming from the can!!!
well where are you placing the initial jack not the jack stand???
Did you even watch the video? I show exactly where to jack up the car both front and rear.
Does the transmission fluid have a dipstick like the older model ?
no
Excellent video!! I’ve got one question? How long is the funnel’s length?
Flotool 18” 10712
Im looking into buying a 2017 HRV with 70k miles, should I ask the dealer about changing the transmission fluid? First time buyer here
Sure, couldn’t hurt to ask
Great video Mr.
Do I need to change the filter in the cvt?
About every 3rd drain/fill you need to change the filters. When it's time to do that, you can watch this "how to": ua-cam.com/video/QK8BkX451CE/v-deo.html
@@spencersgarage What interval do you make between fluid changes?
At what mileage would you recommend changing the transmission fluid?
It’s in the video. Thanks for watching!
The honda maintenance minder will let you know when
I have one question about the smell that you mentioned at 5:21.
I had the fluid changed at the dealership at 30K miles and I did it myself at 63K miles this time yesterday following your direction, and I noticed the strong smell too. It was like smell from burning rubber.
Do you know if that kind of smell is normal for CVT fluid that was changed after 33K miles or gentle to normal driving (no hills, no heavy loads, and no excessive speeding)?
I searched for "CVT fluid smell" and it appears that the "burnt smell" of a transmission is usually associated with fluid break-down due to overheating, which worries me.
Thank you.
It is normal for gear oil to stink.
@@spencersgarage Thank you!
@@spencersgarage q
@@spencersgarage
Old gear oil is one of the absolute worse smells. Definitely the worst smell you get out of a vehicle.
It's normal for CVTs, because they're belt driven and they get hot. Even the best-built CVTs are unreliable and can be finicky at best, meaning you should definitely keep that fluid changed probably even sooner than Honda recommends. 20k wouldn't hurt, and never past 30k.
I didn't know honda made motor oil too.. I've been using royal purple
Honda doesn’t make oil. They get it from a oil company with there logo on the bottle
I think Honda just rebrands the oil. Maybe from Mobile1, I am note sure.
Does your 2017 crv have oil dilution problem? What state are you in?
No. TX
2018 mine does. I Change every 5-6k with full SYN.
Same here 2017,50K changing every 5K.... what is your mileage ? Thinking about selling it or keeping it.
Great video
Great video, thank you!
Hi I would use amsoil CVT transmission fluid it's a synthetic fluid I use it in my 2016 Honda crv I have 55,000 miles you will like it better I promise you
Liquid gold, I got over 200,000 miles on my first amsoil cvt synthetic change. 2006 Prius
Thank for video
Awesome video
Very helpful. Thanks
Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching!
What is the model no for the drain and check bolt crush washers?
They are 2 different sizes
Great video. Very informative
Is that 2 washer same size ?
No.
Drain plug is 18mm inside
Check plug is 14mm I believe which is the same as the engine oil drain.
Thanks
Does the CRV have a trans filter?
Yes, there is a filter located behind the warmer and is internal to the transmission. However, Honda does not recommend replacing this filter for the normal life of the transmission. It would be replaced during a rebuild. But if you want to replace it be sure to also replace the three O rings.
I never did the transmission oil change on my car... now is 120,000 miles.... can anyone tell me if still a good idea to change the oil?
Do a drain and fill only. Not a complete flush. Use manufacturer fluids. Change the filter as well.
@@dannyyo7948 thanks for the advice... but in the video there is no filter to change.
would you pls let us know the mileage of this car and the condition of tranny juice
Excellent!
Thanks
Thanks bud!!!
Glad to help!
In one change we get only a half fluid drained, so after first change drive 150 miles and then change again, then about 75% of fluid will be changed.
Or you just follow recommended Honda service and all should be okay because those service intervals take into consideration that a lot of fluid will not drain out of a transmission.
@@Crewsy Where are you finding the recommended Honda service intervals. I looked in my 2020 CR-V's manual and it literally don't have such intervals. It says to perform a particular maintenance when the display says to, but that makes planning ahead difficult.
I was about to go and drain and fill .. fortunately I didn't
That seemed very easy.
I'm seeing a slight smudge of oil where the tranny is bolting up to the engine...the oil is not dripping or anything.
I only have 2 jack stands…does the car have to be on four?
Yes, I state exactly why in the video…
Do you know what level means?
Also...check your transmission vent tube. Guarantee it's clogged. Everyone I've ever seen is clogged. Mine was at 20k.
Wheres the filter?
They don’t have a filter. They have a screen which can be replaced but is considered maintenance free for normal life of the vehicle.
Why use Honda motor oil?
It's a preference. You technically can use any motor oil that meets Honda standards and is 0w-20.
@@biz4twobiz463 0w-20 is what they suggested in US for "fuel efficiency". Many other countries use 5w-20 or others.
@@gngan ... well, technically you can use what ever oil you wish. But, if you have a warranty concern, then Honda will NOT cover the warranty if the spec of 0w-20 is used that meets the Honda spec. Again, for the USA market.
It's confirmed, I have an oil stain on my lower engine oil cover plate.
And the drop is coming from the transmission side. Time to get a gasket changed.
What year and how many miles on it?
@@spencersgarage 2017, 67k. CRV-EX
In 2022, same car, a gasket failed and I lost my transmission while driving.
Luckily I was under the pre-owned warranty.
@@hubert187 weird. That seems early for a gasket to go out.
Not sure where all you guys are getting that 4.5 quart number for AWD just did my 2017 with AWD with the car perfectly level and let it drain for 1 hour until it almost stopped dripping and put 5 full quarts in with nothing dripping from the check bolt. going to get another quart until it drips.
Straight from the service manual.
@@spencersgarage yeah I saw that, maybe because I drained it until it practically stopped dripping but I got 5 full quarts in with no drip... who knows
Like my Crv 17 Awd i drainef 5 quarts. .i filled the same quarts.
Same thing for my and 2015 crv, put 5 in, ran it a little though the gears, and nothing comes out of the overflow bolt ??, Did you add even move then 5 ??? How did it work out ?
@@vincentlanza5155 I did keep adding fluid until it started running out... not too much more as it was right there, then I let it continue until it was barely dripping and put the plug back in... I let it drain for probably 1 1/2 hours, I guess most people don`t do that
They say it's properly warmed up when the fans kick on twice.
Indeed, the motor will be warmed up then. However, we are trying to warm up and get the fluids moving in the transmission.
Is there a service alert on these cvt transmissions?
Assuming that you are asking about the maintenance minder in the dash, yes. My wifes 22 has just short of 50k and hasn't came on for a trans fluid change yet, but did so for the rear end at 30k and the next service includes flushing the brake fluid.
