We need to remember that the first step in reduce, reuse, recycle is REDUCE! You don't need the latest iPhone or 5 TVs in your house. Minimizing your consumption of electronic products doesn't fix the problem, but it can certainly contribute to its solution.
Some of the price of electronic goods should be paid as a tax for the disposal of this waste and none of it should be shipped overseas, if it is your country's waste it is your problem. This documentary is a real eye opener for people in wealthier countries who have a better lifestyle and think there is no other cost attached to that. The desperate existence of these people is something we should not be allowed to shrug away.

The steel of the can wasn't that valuable, but at the time most tin came from the Dutch East Indies [now Indonesia] and Japan had cut off access to that. Prior to the war, the government stockpiled tin as a strategic metal.
There's a new book "Junkyard Planet" which has a chapter on Guiyo. Illegal electronics recycling is big business, and some people who do it are doing better than if they were farmers. The govt. sometimes takes a blind eye to the industry because it needs the taxes. And some of what goes on in Guiyo is recycling. A broker will buy a container of old iPhones for 50 cents each, and some of the phones will have chips that can be sold for $10.
There is a way to fix this problem, and the current way of "shredding it" NEVER works. There is a different way, but the current mentality is to keep doing this way of business, and this must stop and adopt my ideas. The whole computer must be ACTIVELY recycled all the way, like desoldering the circuit boards through a process by using a Hakko 808 Desoldering gun. When the normal process of shredding occurs in most recycling companies, there is also another problem that those companies overlook, and that is the hazardous material cleanup involved with machines. I think the process has been industrialised more now, ie now the workers work on a production line and sleep in an apartment block, while the machinery is much larger and there are conveyor belts.
@TechaxWorld right now I have two vintage Macintosh machines, ones got os 7 and the other is a grey imac g3. The imac was my first computer. On the windows side I've got a Dell Power edge windows server, custom built windows 98 gaming rig, windows 7 lenovo desktop, and two micro windows xp desktops for projects. I used to have a lot more but found that people on ebay love these computers. Aside those units I have two giant shelves loaded with power supplies, motherboards, keyboards, cpu units, ram sticks, and plastic fillers. This is really helpful though because my father has industrial machines at work that rely on very old computers, and sometimes I need to quickly fix them. Other then computers I love old wood grain or wood shelled technology. I have two console TV sets in wood, one is from 1986 and the other from 1948. The 48 needs a lot of work though and does not start. With that I got four tube radios from the mid century. Cant get enough of them but given some are more than half a century old, they are not very reliable. Ps you mentioned consoles: I have my original ps3 from the younger years, a xbox 360, and complete NES (which goes very well with the 1986 tv). Fallout is my favorite gaming series, specifically 3 and new vegas. I also play csgo but that's on my desktop

A few functioning container gantries in a functioning port is all that is required to connect a new dumping ground with the effluent of the world's affluent. Watching this sucks! I'm definitely guilty, I always upgrade my phone every 2-3 years (definitely not as bad as yearly or a lot of people I know that continues to get the latest and greatest) Hopefully we'll find a solution.
Difficult to feel too sorry for them really. Much equipment made in china is substandard, to the point of being dangerous sometimes, and often has a ridiculously short life. Also, people are too anxious to throw out perfectly servicable things. Last week, I found a 32" SHARP LCD television dumped. The power lead had been cut off. I was very surprised when, after replacing said lead, the set worked perfectly. Another problem is that there are VERY few places left that repair things like that, and as for computers, well the ridiculously short lives of some operating systems make me sick. The 32" TV is not the only thing I've found dumped. Some just "work", some, usually older kit, such as old record players, cassette decks, 8-tracks, etc, need only a minor repair and away they go again. Modern things, much of the time it's small components called capacitors that go, rendering the unit "dead". I replace those with better ones and , away it goes again. What a wasteful world. There's nothing wrong with an old CRT Telly either. If it works, why replace it ? This needs to be adopted by the world. The recent Digital Switch for tellies saw many perfectly useable and even some "vintage" sets scrapped. My old neighbour wanted to keep her 1969 ITT colour set. A suitable converter made this beautifully made old set sing on, as it still does. It even goes to a little white dot when switched off !
I wonder how proud those people would be after seeing this, saying that Indians etc don't throw anything away they recycle everything, a lot of good that does if you spend a fortune on doctors bills more than you earn from recycling in the first place
As long as the signers of this treaty apply the same rules to their end use of the burning of fossil fuels in manufactured hard goods... they have room to talk. Moving hard goods from point A to B at a local level. For instance, the disposal of textiles. Liquid containers, et cetera... straps that hold groups of boxes together. Fibre-optic cable disposal.
We should ship the waste electronics back to their manufacturers. They made the crap and they should recycle it! I don't agree in anyway with this way of disposing of the e-waste. Most of this waste originates in the manufacturing countries and this includes china. We pay for the proper recycling when we purchase a computer or a phone that comes from china in most cases according to the merchants. The manufacturers have to be responsible for disposing of the equipment manufactured with their brand when new technology is sold in the markets.
This is a sad truth, but I plan on making a business which will recycle all the ewaste from the computer, and importing all the ewaste trash to be recycled for the precious metals, and rare earth , as well as hazardous materials. My company will NOT be a waste distribution center, but a real recycler, not some pansy "waste distribution center" . Watch for it coming to the United States soon. I plan on recycling plastics into fuel oil.
We have all this waste because electronic industry wants us to buy new devices more often than needed. As electrician i can tell you that most of it is made to last only a few years, until warranty expires. Making it last longer doesn't cost much more, often the same! Good example are Macs which can't be upgraded like PCs when new model comes out. We should ban Apple products! Working phone chargers are discarded only because new phones have slighty different connectors. I could go on and on...

I have a campaign on both indiegogo.com, and rockethub.com under "Renegade's Computer" , and you will see a plan I have for this problem that I have been working on for a while, and I am looking for funds to start it soon in my local area, with plans to have it in each of the 50 states, and then to go worldwide with my plan hopefully within a year after I start my business. It will recycle everything in the computer, and make plastic into fuel oil, and recycling everything in the computer, including the crt's, the mercury inside them, the recycling of fluorescent bulbs, as well as flat screen monitors as well, and other things like stripping copper wires through a copper wire machine, using a desoldering vacuum to remove the through hole components, as well as using a vapor phase reflow machine to remove integrated chips. Don't buy electronics. Listen: EVERY industry that makes stuff also makes pollution. It's how life is. From fracking to farming. Look up farm to fridge on google. Everything you own or buy or use, someone died to make it for you. Americans, Asians, Indians, all races and nationalities.
Maybe this solution is a little to simple, instead of spending large amounts of money banning the export of hazardous waist and taking away the jobs in Asia we should instead send equipment to that village and others like it so they can strip down everything much more effectively and safely without polluting their own countryside. No offense but these people look like they need order when it comes to recycling these materials. Only one guy in that whole village was smart enough to put a fan next to him to blow away the fumes so he would not inhale them while extracting the solder.
+Gabriel Pierce the solution is to send the used products back to the manufacturer and make them extract their own materials for reuse and safely get rid of what they can't recycle. Then they wil start doing a better job of designing this stuff to last longer and easier to recycle

Last salvage yard I dealt with was paying $3 for a PC tower. They don't pay anything for monitors, keyboards, etc.

Use in asphalt is a really good idea, allows refineries to also absorb some waste.

What the problem is now in terms of the sheer scale of e-waste now entering the waste stream and of all the damage done over the last quarter of a century beggars belief. Even if the US drags its feet on this issue at least the Chinese are beginning to realise that trashing their country and their health is a shortsighted thing to do. Which leaves plenty of non-functioning states around the world to pick up the slack. A few functioning container gantries in a functioning port is all that is required to connect a new dumping ground with the effluent of the world's affluent. Probably better for people in the west than non-functioning states exporting terrorism. If Mr Obama hasn't nailed it, what are the prospects under, say, Mr Trump?

One problem with this video, WHAT do the chinese people do with the parts they are sorting out, especially the black toner from printer cartridges. that was not mentioned except to say the cartridges wind up in a river. who is buying reclaimed toner? ,who buys it? Is it necessarily fed back to us in other products, what could they possibly do with our nuclear waste, maybe they have a solution to that problem.

Watching this sucks! I'm definitely guilty, I always upgrade my phone every 2-3 years (definitely not as bad as yearly or a lot of people I know that continues to get the latest and greatest) Hopefully we'll find a solution.

Difficult to feel too sorry for them really. Much equipment made in china is substandard, to the point of being dangerous sometimes, and often has a ridiculously short life. Also, people are too anxious to throw out perfectly servicable things. Last week, I found a 32" SHARP LCD television dumped. The power lead had been cut off. I was very surprised when, after replacing said lead, the set worked perfectly. Another problem is that there are VERY few places left that repair things like that, and as for computers, well the ridiculously short lives of some operating systems make me sick. The 32" TV is not the only thing I've found dumped. Some just "work", some, usually older kit, such as old record players, cassette decks, 8-tracks, etc, need only a minor repair and away they go again. Modern things, much of the time it's small components called capacitors that go, rendering the unit "dead". I replace those with better ones and , away it goes again. What a wasteful world. There's nothing wrong with an old CRT Telly either. If it works, why replace it ? This needs to be adopted by the world. The recent Digital Switch for tellies saw many perfectly useable and even some "vintage" sets scrapped. My old neighbour wanted to keep her 1969 ITT colour set. A suitable converter made this beautifully made old set sing on, as it still does. It even goes to a little white dot when switched off !
Other e-waste comes also from Asian countries like South Korea and Japan and 'export' them in developing Asian countries like the Philippines.
I wonder how proud those people would be after seeing this, saying that Indians etc don't throw anything away they recycle everything, a lot of good that does if you spend a fortune on doctors bills more than you earn from recycling in the first place
As long as the signers of this treaty apply the same rules to their end use of the burning of fossil fuels in manufactured hard goods... they have room to talk. Moving hard goods from point A to B at a local level. For instance, the disposal of textiles. Liquid containers, et cetera... straps that hold groups of boxes together. Fibre-optic cable disposal.

We should ship the waste electronics back to their manufacturers. They made the crap and they should recycle it! I know since I recycle all i find with tons of mixed plastic crap that winds up in landfills. When will we learn not to defecate where we sleep? We only have one planet; lets try to leave it better than we found it.

It's their own fault, I agree. However, if they have the money to design those specialized buildings, would they do that for a living? Also, if the "rich" countries can't properly build the infrastructure to take care of these e-waste, how do you suppose the "poor" countries can do this?

I don't agree in anyway with this way of disposing of the e-waste. Most of this waste originates in the manufacturing countries and this includes china. We pay for the proper recycling when we purchase a computer or a phone that comes from china in most cases according to the merchants. The manufacturers have to be responsible for disposing of the equipment manufactured with their brand when new technology is sold in the markets.
I've never seen such inefficiency. All these electronics could be taken apart on disassembly lines. Just reverse an assembly line.
A robot could put these thousands of people out of work.

This is a sad truth, but I plan on making a business which will recycle all the ewaste from the computer, and importing all the ewaste trash to be recycled for the precious metals, and rare earth , as well as hazardous materials. My company will NOT be a waste distribution center, but a real recycler, not some pansy "waste distribution center" . Watch for it coming to the United States soon. I plan on recycling plastics into fuel oil.
We have all this waste because electronic industry wants us to buy new devices more often than needed. As electrician i can tell you that most of it is made to last only a few years, until warranty expires. Making it last longer doesn't cost much more, often the same! Good example are Macs which can't be upgraded like PCs when new model comes out. We should ban Apple products! Working phone chargers are discarded only because new phones have slighty different connectors. I could go on and on...

I have a campaign on both indiegogo.com, and rockethub.com under "Renegade's Computer" , and you will see a plan I have for this problem that I have been working on for a while, and I am looking for funds to start it soon in my local area, with plans to have it in each of the 50 states, and then to go worldwide with my plan hopefully within a year after I start my business. It will recycle everything in the computer, and make plastic into fuel oil, and recycling everything in the computer, including the crt's, the mercury inside them, the recycling of fluorescent bulbs, as well as flat screen monitors as well, and other things like stripping copper wires through a copper wire machine, using a desoldering vacuum to remove the through hole components, as well as using a vapor phase reflow machine to remove integrated chips. Don't buy electronics. Listen: EVERY industry that makes stuff also makes pollution. It's how life is. From fracking to farming. Look up farm to fridge on google. Everything you own or buy or use, someone died to make it for you. Americans, Asians, Indians, all races and nationalities.

Maybe this solution is a little to simple, instead of spending large amounts of money banning the export of hazardous waist and taking away the jobs in Asia we should instead send equipment to that village and others like it so they can strip down everything much more effectively and safely without polluting their own countryside. No offense but these people look like they need order when it comes to recycling these materials. Only one guy in that whole village was smart enough to put a fan next to him to blow away the fumes so he would not inhale them while extracting the solder.
+Gabriel Pierce the solution is to send the used products back to the manufacturer and make them extract their own materials for reuse and safely get rid of what they can't recycle. Then they wil start doing a better job of designing this stuff to last longer and easier to recycle
