Pakistan has become an illegal dumping ground for some of the 50 million tons of e-waste created each year. Karachi's poor earn a living from the toxic detritus, but the vicious cycle of consumption could prove fatal.
In Pakistan, the massive arrival of electronic waste has created an informal substance economy that feeds 150,000 people. The country's poor salvage what they can from the cast-offs of the electronic revolution: copper, steel, brass. Nassir is one who has cashed in on the opportunities found in old cables and hard-drives. "It’s a good business. I have more and more work", he says. Yet workers pay the price for a few grams of copper; 4 million people die every year because of electronic waste and recycling workers have the lowest life expectancy in Pakistan. In his recycling shop, Akhbar earns 2€ on a good day. It feeds his family of six, but his health has suffered. "This job is dangerous. It’s very toxic". And the toxic legacy is far-reaching - "It’s a catastrophe...especially for the children", warns Saba, an activist for the WWF. "They will continue to live here and be poisoned, it’s dangerous for them and it’s dangerous for the next generations". In our relentlessly consumerist world, can the global poor be saved from the toxic trade in e-waste?

But then about 150,000 lives in Karachi alone will be turned upside down, taking their jobs and 2 euros a day from them... So it's a double edged sword and it's not as straightforward as it seems.

We humans are consuming way more than we require...put a environment levy on the cost of product which will make it automatically expensive reducing consumption at the same time the levy should be used to minimise the impact to environment caused by our consumption

It is because it is too expensive to by masks containing the pure cotton and other materials because the money in some countries have lower values than others which makes it harder for people in third world countries to buy protection because they would rather suffer toxic gas rather than starving to death. I have been to Pakistan last year for 3 months to do some charity work and the 1st problem that I seen is that yes the government have a bugget for that stuff but the small village MPs are putting it in there pockets building them self's houses have nice car and not spending the money were it should of been spend. It's very sad because Pakistan is a beautiful country with alot of potential but it's full of corruption....

At age 16, I was living in Japan and saw firsthand how recycling was done. I would visit the electronics shops in Tachikawa City to buy parts for electronics projects. Men would be squatting in front of a pile of old TV sets to extract the copper wire from them and to cut parts out to resell in the electronics stores. It was a clean and thriving business.
Fast forward to today... There are very very few discrete components in electronics today that have any value. Recycling requires special techniques and methods to extract the valuable elements contained in them.
I grew up poor and know poverty firsthand. These people have no choice but to work in these situations in order to subsist. Could Akbar use better techniques in his recycling efforts? Sure! But look at who is "choosing" to live this way. Akbar is. Recycling, good or bad, is a choice. There is no such thing as lack of opportunity.
As far as blaming electronics companies for their part in this, consider this. In 1966 there were no recycling companies handling e-waste. Just a few people recycling copper. With the newer technologies, electronics companies have found ways to lessen the impact of the e-waste by making things smaller. Don't think so? When was the last time you sat down at a computer instead of your cellphone to send a text or email... or to watch this video?
Copper costs a couple of bucks a pound these days. Back then it was only pennies. Everything is getting more expensive and unfortunately for the poor, their lives are getting cheaper because of this "revolution" in technology. We will all suffer for this.

I find these people incredibly resourceful, I admire them. I just wish they had a better, more environmentally friendly way of harvesting the e-waste. The concept is a great idea as is all recycling, but it is so sad that it is at the expense of their health.

They lie and refuse to repair easily repairable equipment, just to force the customer to discard their existing equipment and buy a new item. It's sick and they should be held accountable.
Where I live, just about everybody does that. Just last week I took in a laptop/tablet hybrid and the tech guy said it couldn't be fixed despite the fact that it was only the battery that needed to be replaced and reconnecting the wires that eventually came loose as I was still using it in that condition. Took it to the mobile phone repair shop, where I was really getting my phone fixed but showed it to the tech guy there and he said that indeed it could be repaired. They do that with just about everything from household appliances to motor vehicles just to rip us off. Simple repairs aren't money makers, so they force us to buy new stuff.
I wonder why these companies can't or won't be sending all these products to Detroit or any other shit city here in the U.S. It seems to be a great way to keep people busy and have a job to do.

The electronics is only hazardous when people set fire to it. I have been working with these things all of my life, and it has caused me no harm at all. I wash my hands before eating after handling lead and other things. I don't get why these products are not available to more people so we can experiment with the stuff, and make what we want from it. Most of my equipment that was not bought new, is something that I bought parts for and repaired so I could make use of it. Also my computers have parts in them from things that are used. These things are not dangerous to people unless we are smoking them and taking a toke off the fumes.

I don't deny the toxicity, but everyone living in poverty is sick because they live in filthy conditions with unclean water and no fresh food. Guys! I work for a hardware sales company and what i have experienced is that the greed of these multinational computer and printer companies is responsible for this. Customers are always willing to repair a faulty printer or computer. But these OEM keep the spare prices so high that many a time the customer is forced to buy new and discard the old which is contributing to this mess. Shame on u multinationals your greed is killing everyone. I would love to create awareness and would like fellow like-minded guys to start talking about this. I would like vice o delve deep into this scam.

It's pretty unrealistic to talk about repairing old computers. The technology advances so quickly that the old computers lose their value even if they work perfectly. The best solution would be clean and efficient recycling.

Mother Nature/God will reduce the population as we go along. Give it a few generations. It won't be pretty, and "God" will have not mercy as he/she smites your ass.
