    Protein skimmers are the equivalent to the ocean foam on the beach - the waves never stop crashing to create this and neither should ours! ;)

    I googled this question yesterday, got tons of varying responses as per usual. This was much appreciated, and in great time too!

    I run mine maybe half of the week. I don’t want to pull out too much bacteria and natural planktonic foods that my SPS corals can feed on.

    Thanks interesting perspective, I would like to run a side by side experiment some day. Currently I have no skimmer just a carbon reactor with coarse foam. I also only have one fish.

    My skimmer is off during evenings when I'm home, can't stand the noise

    For the average aquarist, I truly believe the focus should be on less protein produced in the tank as a ratio to tank/water size. No need to have a skimmer at all for any reason if ur not producing/adding "protein". So then, how much protein can be converted/consumed by coral plants and others, then how much "waste" is the livestock producing that cannot be consumed etc... then, do you really "NEED" that added "jewel"/fish...

    I run mine 24/7 but most days it just makes bubbles and no skim. My tank must very clean because it only produces about an 1/8 of the cup a week and my nitrates are 30.

    Could you please do a video or help me with Micro Bubble Scrubbing? I can only find old videos on it on YT. Do you recommend using it? All night or only during the daily detritus removal high flow hour?
    I have used it 2 years ago and seemed to help clear up the tank and remove detritus but am in doubt whether I should implement it again.

      Bubble scrubbing is not something that any of us here at BRS have really bought into. The theory makes sense, basically turning your tank into a protein skimmer. The biggest downside, other than potentially irritating the livestock in the tank, is that bubble scrubbing is messy. The bubbles pop and cause salt creep, which is a pain to deal with. Everyone has a slightly different way of maintaining their reef, but we think there are better options.

      @@BulkReefSupply Thanks for the response! Never thought about the salt creep. Micro bubbles can reach and remove detritus from within the rockwork and coral colonies, but would the remaining trapped air have negative effects?

    I do weekly water changes but I run my skimmer over night for about 15hrs and off for 9hrs. Is this bad?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 роки тому +1

      The majority of us that have a protein skimmer will run them 24/7, but there are a few instances where you may not want to do that. Thomas covers all of that in this video 🙂

    Show us a study that shows protein skimmers increase oxygenation. The other day I heard there was a study showing it has no effect. Now I really want to know who is right?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 роки тому +2

      While protein skimmers don't actually produce oxygen, it allows for a great area for the oxygen levels in the tank to equalize with the surrounding room. In most cases, this ends up yielding more oxygen rich water, but to what degree does depend on the surrounding room.

    short answer: yes. longer answer: the pump never starts back up without 30 minutes of messing with it and getting to the point of nearly throwing it into the street

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 роки тому

      Bummer to hear that you're having issues with your skimmer. If your pump is taking that much work to get going again, it might be time for a new pump or impeller. If this is a skimmer you bought through us recently, it may still be under warranty. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team if we can help in any way.
