    I bought an original X100 with my Christmas bonus back in 2011. It genuinely changed my photography life. I had the sticky aperture blades fixed for free early on, but even after hammering it through to about 2014, it still works great even now. Never bought another X100, but an X-Pro2 with a Fujicron is pretty much my go-to sling-it-in-my-man-bag device even now. Yeah, autofocus is still crap, but I only shoot stuff that doesn’t move at f8, so it does the job.

      Bought a x100 black edition for 340€ a bit over a year ago. First fuji and first apsc. I've been using it a ton since most of my shooting doesn't have fast subjects. Such a beautiful camera to use and holds up very nicely as long as you avoid it's many down falls. The 16Mp sesnsor is more than enough and sometimes less is more. Motion blur can more often have a nice softness to it. Lately i've just set it to my B&W custom setting. For calm photowalks it's still a very nice camera, for me at least.

      @@Ozy_x You got lucky. I won an ebay auction on an XPro1 with the 35 F1.4 in 2016 for $460. The seller suddenly discovered that they "never intended to sell" and "put the camera up for sale by mistake". Ebay decided in their favor because they don't care. As a seller, I've had several "buyers" essentially borrow my stuff for free and then send it back with flimsy excuses for why they weren't "as described". I avoid ebay these days because it's just a place where scammers find their victims now.

      Let me also clarify that it is not my main working camera. There are several I grab to use before it, BUT when there's a use case that lines up well with the X100S' strengths, I still enjoy using it. Sunny street photography with wide depth of field, minimal AF needs, etc.

Also I did listen to this weeks podcast where you discussed what Nikon should do next and I was a little surprised that there was no suggestion of a digital remake of the old S rangefinder to do battle with the Fuji. I think it would be a massive hit.

  • @matthieuzglurg6015
    @matthieuzglurg6015 4 дні тому +29

    little rectification : the 1/3rd stop increments on the 1st X100 were done with the back wheel for the shutter speed. The back rocker was for the aperture.
    Also, unlike the X100S, the X100 had TWO function buttons that could be repurposed : the Fn button on top, but also the "RAW" button in the back. The best control setup with the X100 is 100% to go with the top Fn button to control ISO, and the "RAW" button to toggle the ND filter.
    The first X100 was very much a really iconic camera, and since it's the first one, it's quickly becoming a collector's camera. I bought mine for 250 bucks in 2021, was able to sell it for a relatively low (compared to the rest of the market) 500€ in 2023. Absolutely mental prices for a camera taht really doesn't perform that well.
    Nowadays, the X100S is generally cheaper, and better in (almost) every way. I bought one recently for about 300€ (banger price) and the experience is much better : faster AF, better sensor, much better EVF. Only gripe is that since the RAW button was replaced with the Q menu button, I had to trade my ND filter toggle with the Q menu. Arguably I don't really use the ND filter much anyway, but still that's a bit of an issue sometimes.
    Would I want an X100T? or F? or V? Yeah, sure. But the prices are inflated to a point where I could buy a modern full frame camera for that kind of money (actually, I did : bought a Nikon Z6 for half the price an X100F goes for in my country).
    I can understand the issue with the image freezing, but at the same time I always use the OVF with those, I don't think I noticed it before, or that it bothered me. The AF is quite reliable on the X100S as long as you use AF-S, and I could even caprute some moving subjects with a little bit of practice. The phase detect points really sped things up compared to the original X100.
    The X100T, is mostly QoL improvements, and though it's still a nice camera, considering the price premium you pay over the X100S, which has the same autofocus, sams sensor, same lens and everything, I think the price premium is NOT worth it.
    Overall, I think I agree with Mattias Burling : the X100 is too old and becoming a collectors item with really inflated prices. The X100T is nice, but the price is way too high compared to the performance you get out of it. The X100F and onwards are just straight up not affordable, even if the upgrades are massive. In the end, if you want an X100 camera and that you're not bothered much by the slow autofocus, the X100S is by far the best value here. Cheaper than the X100, but with much better usability, better sensor ect.
    Of course, if you buy an X100S thinking you'll get something similar to the X100V or VI : it will be similar only by the way it looks, but everything else will be substantially worse, and you need to manage your expectations.

    I still have my X100S and I’ve liked using it in recent years too. For the AF, I do single point then recompose, and that works pretty well if you’re not in a hurry. I now have a X-T5 with pancake lenses as well, and sometimes going back to the X100S is a bit frustrating; not because of the AF, but because of the slow processor. There are a bunch of tiny delays when shooting, and longer delays when buffering and writing to the SD card. Not the end of the world, and I use it for slow-paced stuff anyway, but it’s something one has to adjust to.

    I am still "doing battle" with my original x100 and am waiting for the new one I ordered in February and supposedly will arrive in September. I want easy waist-level shooting with some hope of actual speedy focusing - hopefully. It would be nice if it tracked, but I hear they lie a lot about Fuji tracking being "good" even on the newest cameras like the xt5 and xh2. If they upgraded the Ricoh GR series and had some kind of finder etc. I might have gone that way.
    I like the idea of pre-focusing a DOF and shooting, provided there is no shutter delay. Oddly I think in many ways you could be far more instant in your shots years ago. There really should be no shutter delay these days on anything.

I've done 3 weddings with using the x100t as my main camera in a 10 hour wedding. Sure battery is not great, that's why I have 3. Autofocus isn't super fast, but it's fast enough. Time your shots, anticipate the scenes. People stop relying on your gear to take good pictures. Practice on your skills, and your gear will be just an extension of you.

    Had the original X100 and loved it but barely used it - it was sooo slow. Sold it last month for 500€! added 300 more and bought a mint X100 F! And it is all I wanted the original to be. It's a perfect camera
    No further upgrades necessary

    Still waiting on my launch day order of X100VI - mid November ship date. The new AF, subject detection, and IBIS are key to me, immediately removes all others. I want it as little lifestyle point and shoot for quick candid moments, those rarely get redo's so I want it accurate within the first shot or two. A phone could do it but feels intrusive, socially negative, and invites bad behaviors. My X-T5 could do it, but even at it's slimmest is not a 1:1 replacement, I also see it more as an expensive tool and less of something I want to grab every time I leave the house.

  • @patrick8035
    @patrick8035 4 дні тому

    Didn’t get raised in the video I don’t think, but my OG x100 had a weird quirk where the AF seems to work better if you’re composing using the EVF/screen vs the OVF. Not sure why - it could be simple as the AF box being in a different place in relation to the frame when you compose using the OVF because of parallax. I was gifted my X100 so I’ll never get rid of it, but agree with C&J that for a better overall experience it’s better to go for the later models

  • @larrywhite8590

    The lack of IBIS on the V is actually a bonus for those of us that use the X100 in harsher conditions. IBIS units can fail under vibration. So for me the V is the right choice and the VI while interesting does not work for my use case.

      I had a X20 that I sold about a year ago for a lot more than I bought it for. I often regret selling it and would like to get another, but I cannot justify the price they are going for. That zoom lens was very nice. Low light noise was definitely an issue with it, but shooting at iso 1600 indoors in B&W it gave a very nice grainy look.

    • @ecoolio
      @ecoolio 2 дні тому

      I got an X30 at a local thrift shop for 50$ in December ‘23!! Phone-ish sized sensor but with results I find more pleasingly natural. Though of course for EZ HDR, the computational photography of phones has an advantage with extreme dynamic range. It does have DR boost though which I assume is a dual ISO thing.
      Wide angle super macro is challenging with so little working distance, but still nice to have. Do wish it had one or two more buttons, to have more settings at my fingertips rather than use the “quick” menu, but at least the buttons it does have you can reassign to pretty much anything. Gets decent background separation at headshot distances.
      Focusing is good enough, the IBIS is very effective, and a burst rate of 7fps, I think even 12 in jpeg only. Fits in most jacket or cargo pockets! Oh, and has wifi. EVF resolution is l fine, though sadly the colors are a bit off from the rear screen’s.
      I’ve tried not to use it above ISO 400 but that’s to be expected I feel. Otherwise, for an 11 year old camera it still seems quite capable and versatile to me. Then again, I suppose I don’t really know how much more better a modern version would be when phones started killing the compact market in the years since :/
      Released only a year after the t5i that was my first “serious” camera, yet it feels so much more feature packed and customizable. Aside from the obvious big disadvantage of the fixed lens+small sensor. It’s made photography fun for me again

    I have used X100s 8 years ago. The auto focus is painful, film processing is uncomfortable slow. I try X100T recently. Auto focus and film processing is still slow but not to be unbearable.
    Looking forward to try X100F, V and the VI
    Beside, I pretty suprise that my canon M50 can produce film like color with picture profile with much faster processing.

    One of the big problems I have (original buggy---sorry, quirky) x100 is finding OEM batteries. The slowness and bugs rarely bother me anymore as I use it only occasionally. I have other much better cameras. Actually I had other much better cameras even back then. One good point is that it does not use the xtrans sensor. I do have the enjoyment of watching its buy back price on MAP camera increase more and more. I recall a few years ago the offer was less than ¥10,000. Now it is heading towards ¥40-50,000.

    I sold my X100F back then due to the lens and missing weather resistance. Never took it with me on city trips on cloudy days, as I feared rain and I always used it either with the wide- or teleconversion lens. 35mm is not for me and it gets bulky with those addons.
    Unfortunately the Leica Q2 is the only compact offering 28mm equivalent with proper sealing. But it’s not a true 28mm, which sucks….

    I have a X100S. Still going strong! Love the little bugger! Image quality is still very good IMHO. The noise is almost grain like. The colors are amazing! Focussing is good enough for me (I always use single shot, single point autofocus on all my camera's). I use it mainly for travel and street photography. I think Jordan is spoiled by al those modern camera's that do all the work for him nowadays! 😉
    I also have another Fuji, the XT30 with (among other things) the 27mm and the 18mm pancakes. That's an even a smaller package! The auto focussing is waaaaaaay better than that of the X100S.
    Instead of buying any of these older, used X100 camera's, buy a used XT30 instead! Just as cool, retro looking, even smaller in size, cheaper and you can change lenses. What's not too like!?

      Great point on the XT30 or similar small ICL cameras! Mind if I ask you if there are times when you have missed having the leaf shutter when using your XT30 for travel / street photography? Am wondering how big of a deal that would be in real life.

    • @user-ec8zd8zp4x
      @user-ec8zd8zp4x 3 дні тому +1

      @@marcorenato1814 The leaf shutter of the X100s is really great! But on the XT30 I mostly use the electronic shutter, so I can shoot wide open (f/1.4 - f/2) and quietly. Sensor read out is really, really fast! But indoors (with lighting) or with high speed movement I use the mechanical shutter. The mechanical shutter of the XT30 is - let's say - less sophisticated than the leaf shutter of the X100s, but it's not bad. It's louder and gives more of a slap, but is not like my old Canon DSLR's. For me that's not a big deal, but I prefer a leaf shutter.

    I really enjoyed the S/F/V over the years that I owned. I now have the ricoh GriiX HDF as my main fixed lens travel cam and prefer it. For $1600 I feel the now Chinese made x100vi just isn't worth it. The autofocus is still much worse than my a6100 that cost $500. I ricoh isn't good either but snapfocus and the size/ease of use a key benefit. Kids like the film simulations but lightroom presets/profiles offer more options for whatever camera.

    The original X100 will forever be my favorite digital camera. What I've noticed about the newer models (F, V, VI) is that Fuji lost design interest in the body design. The newer bodies just look like slabs of clean, straight cornered boring magnesium very "modern Apple design", where as if you look at the body of the original X100 you can see they put thought into every curve of the body.

    The x100 promised much, delivered little. The x100s (s stands for should have been released as this) was and is great little camera, obviously depends on what you ask it to do, it’s not fast but it is still capable. An aftermarket thumb grip keeps the exposure comp dial from being annoyingly bumped, problem solved. Like any camera, when you know it, you can use it to advantage. I now have the F version and despite its superiority on paper, it lacks some of the charm of the 100s, IMO. Will I invest in the latest x100 releases, doubtful, amazing as it is, it has priced itself out of my tax bracket. One observation is that there was a lot of talk about about Fuji’s being an old man’s camera with the retro design rather than menu driven, and now they are often on backorder and hipsters no longer laugh and point, rather they have been absorbed into the collective because resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
