  • Can you salvage 3 year old gasoline ?
Well as you will see the story of how my old 1997 Dodge Truck was sitting for 3 years 4 months with a 1/2 tank of gasoline in it and why it sat for so long and what I did to get the gasoline stable again.
Now this is not saying that this will work for everyone, as maybe I was just lucky but since Texas does have a 90/10 (10% ethanol) from everything I read online, after 6 months or so the gas will undergo a "phase" separation, alcohol separates and goes to the bottom and gasoline goes to the top and also degrades into gum/varnish and is unusable.
I will say that "maybe" I got lucky, or maybe what I used/did actually worked.
Also, since the Truck sat out in the nice HOT Texas Sun for the past 3 summers (115*) the paint is destroyed and so was the dashboard ! Any Dodge people out there that can lend some advice regarding the entire dashboard assembly? I would appreciate any advice !

Can't go wrong with those Dodge trucks

Sounds like you had really good luck with that Dodge ! I’m really surprised it still has so many original parts for 200,000 plus miles. Better keep ole Betsy around for awhile 👍

Ha! That's great! Can't wait to see the resurrection. I've got a 2003 Sonata daily driver, with 308k miles. Have replaced the belt, & 1 headlight. Both passenger side wheel bearings getting changed next week. Still runs great. Her name is Methuselah.

haha, Methuselah, neat name. Still waiting on dash parts to arrive but will be changing out the thermostat, and seeing if the inspection place will inspect it with the dash falling apart or if I need to get that fixed first, if they inspect it, then I can get new plates for it and get her back on the road and put some mileage on her again, then do the dash, clean out the interior, get new tires and probably shocks, then in the spring start on the paint.

Badass Cobra you had. That gasoline should have been sludge by now. Your lucky and looking forward to how this progresses.

    • @WORTHITORNOTBackStage

Thanks, the Cobra was a fun car but a major money pit by the time I got it reliable and not breaking transmissions/rear ends/motors lol. From what I saw online the gasoline should have been junk, but I got LUCKY ! Dashboard removal and replacement will be next, then inspection/registration and then paint in the Spring. Glad to get old Betsy running again.

I worked with a professor when doing my chemical engineering degree, she used to work at a fuel refinery and told me normal non ethanol gas if sealed in a metal container could last for a very long time

oldest gas I have run is 10 years old. kept it in a metal gas can and ran my tiller for the garden every year till I ran out 10 years later when I put the rest in my truck to get it started. and it started and ran...

Dodge starters have that whine as they kick in. The 318 engine is bulletproof, my dad only drove Dodge trucks. He would run them forever.

haha, funny you say that about the starters on them, yup all have that whine. The 318 is a good motor as long as the oil is changed and its not over revved, it will run forever. I'm going to see if I can break 300k miles on it :)

If the tank is properly sealed gas doesn’t break down as fast as they say especially with modern cars the issue is with older pre 1990 cars with older non evaporate systems they can build condensation and the fuel degrades very very fast within a year it’s varnish but newer vehicles can have fuel in the tank for up to five years just add a little fresh gas shake the car and add a couple bottles of fuel stabilizer and some octane booster it should be fine if the fuel level is super low just fill up with fresh gas and drive the tank out and no damage should be done

NOT true, my truck parked 2.5 years due to Covid . Replaced battery, fired it. It worked. However, smoke filled the street. *BAD GAS* , smoke , not vapor , I know, and it smelled like unburned gasoline. After I emptied the tank and refilled, 10 minutes later , smoke no more.

From 94-2002, all Dodge dashes fell apart! I replaced my 2001 last year, about a 16 hour job, pain in the butt! It’s better to buy after market than junkyard, because the junkyard one will do the same. They didn’t put the right kind of additives in the plastics when manufacturing them. The aftermarket ones are better material. Replace the heater core while you’re at it, even if not leaking, you don’t want to have to take the dash out again, trust me!😢

I looked around, but could only find aftermarket dash tops, not the entire dash unfortunately. I decided to donate it to Junk for Joy to benefit the kids. They sold it at Auction for $1,200 and every penny went to Junk for Joy and I got a tax write off so it was a win/win in the long run.

Good idea, I was stuck in a situation of trying to salvage the gas just to move the truck and to my surprise it's been fine for almost a year now still running great.

  • @wildthoughts6959

You can start it , but old gasoline ruins your fuel injection, spark-plugs, and causes misfire , as well as major smoke . It can also catalyst converters and o2 sensors. Empty it and refill with high octane ASAP.

That's what my wife has been saying for 5 years now, I guess I should have back then when the dash was not a fragile mess. Oh well, I've had it since new and will give me something to tinker with.
