The thing is they got sued by Atari for making an "Enhancement kit" for a game called missile command and settled out of court by saying they would work for Atari. Not wanting all the work to go to waste they got in contact with Midway and lied saying they had won the Atari lawsuit and made an offer to Midway to release the kit officially while paying the dropouts some of the profit, saying that if Midway rejected it and then tried to sue them for releasing it anyways, that Midway would loose the lawsuit. Needless to say Midway accepted the offer to release it officially and we got Ms. Pacman.

I'd like to see something like this for the Championship Editions in the future. The NES version made for that Namco game collection has now been spread around online as a usable ROM file, and fun fact: it was included by collaborating with a fan who had begun making that version of the game as a fan project years prior! Also you're right about original Pac-Man having no RNG. It could technically be called deterministic, but unless you're either doing TAS or following a pattern, it's not likely you'll be able to influence anything more than making a ghost turn a particular way in the immediate future. _Also_ I keep editing this comment but it's true that the killscreen in the original game is pretty much the end. There are still a few dots in the right half of the screen, but it's not enough to count as clearing the board even if you get them all. I think saying Midway was a "leech on the belly of Namco" is kind of a harsh oversimplification of the company's history. Sure they had a weird and litigious relationship with Namco, but they also independently created some of the most beloved arcade games of all time, including NBA Jam and fucking Mortal Kombat.
So the guy thought that the melon was a bunch of grapes, but look at 31:50! They ARE grapes in this game! So he wasn't the only one to think that! And no, that's not a melon, these grapes are obviously separated by black outlines and even have their own light spots on them.

in og pac-man, the power pill timer is effectively 0 so it does do nothing. _but_ it actually does do something. technically the ghosts get scared for less than a frame, which is enough to alter the behavior of the ghosts, and they might do things like turn right around. basically, picking up a power pill late game gives the ghosts a free intersection which can be advantageous, or disadvantageous, in some situations.

While playing Pac-Land, Grayfruit describes the Pac-Man formula as something like "...eat the pills; remove the ghosts." This statement instantly established new head-cannon... Pac-Man is insane and keeps having new hallucinations (games) and he eats too many pills, only making those hallucinations worse. Two videos now that I am going to plug Retro Game Mechanics. He, again, has a /stellar/ video on the 256 killscreen, why it happens, how it happens, and why it looks the way it does. As a kid I had a pacman game with a level editor and discovered some glitches which let you create traps which would get you stuck in a wall, weird shit like that. I need to find it and play it again Edit: Found it! It's actually a not pac-man game, aka unofficial, but is great just for the level editor alone! It's called "Pac-The-Man X" and is abandonware at this point so is available to download for free on old software repositories
We've been seeing the Pac-Man story in the wrong order all along. Clyde first identified as Tim, then had gender realizations and took on the feminine name of Sue, and now they're nb as Clyde (skipping past the part where Blinky and Clyde switched names for like a decade because what Blinky did in New Mexico is not relevant here)
PAC-LAND is controlled with buttons only instead of a joystick. There was a pair of buttons in the middle to control direction and there were two buttons on the left and right of the directional buttons to jump to support ambidextrous play. That’s why it was controlled with 1, 2, and 3 on MAME.
There was actually a baby pac-man cabinet at the retro arcade near where i live, unfortunately the pinball half didn't work so the entire machine was unplugged and unused. really wish i could have played it! The reason pac-land used your number keys, was because it didn't use a joystick, it was a 3 button game, 2 jump buttons on the left and right, and buttons for moving left and right in the middle of the cabinet. not related but i got 3rd place on pacman 99 the other day thought i'd mention it
Fun fact about Mania's jumping mechanic: if you jump in front of a ghost that's following you it will slow down while it looks up, so you can basically spam jump to escape from it

I'd love to read up on why arcade games like that Pacman rom have that weird startup jumbled garbage sequence. It feels like some sort of decompression, setup or just testing routine where it uses all its memory to do it but doesn't actually care what's on the screen yet. No idea. But I'd love to see an official write up on it. The write ups out there on the Pacman Level 256 killscreen are incredibly in depth too. "Retro Game Mechanics Explained" has the most amazing video covering this bug. Very in depth with good visuals.

Alright folks, here's some Pac-Loreᵀᴹ for y'all while we're at it. The canonical reason why the ghosts chase Pac-Man and his family is because they're assholes, and they find it funny. Baby Pac-Man and Junior are different characters, but even though Baby got his game first, Junior is the firstborn; considering the intermission of Ms. Pac-Man has him looking just like Baby Pac-Man in the arcade/pinball game (a smaller Pac-Man with no other distinctive features), it's possible the first Baby Pac-Man is just a younger Junior. Miru was going to show up in Pac-Man World, but she wasn't included because Pac & Pal wasn't released in America at the time, and the developers didn't knew who she was, whoops. Blinky's kid is called Yum-Yum (Ren-Ren in Japanese), and she's Junior's girlfriend, which is why Blinky is so pissed with him. She hasn't showed up in any games besides a cameo in the Namco Arcade website, since Midway is fucking dead, and they took half the characters' copyrights with them. The new ghosts in Pac-Mania are called Spunky and Funky, and they're cousins.
I am very upset not to see Pac-Man Arrangement. Its one of my favorite Pac-Man games ever! I had it in a Namco Pac-Man collection for the GBA. It follows the standard formula, but with one new ghost, "Kinky". It had glasses, and was a pale orange. I dont know what his AI was, but he was virtually useless, and not really introduced until about 3 levels in. _Then he throws a kink into the game._ Kinky has the ability to fuse with another ghost and power them up. Blinky grows horns and wears boxing gloves, and will charge at Pac-Man. Pinky grows bunny ears and will leap across the stage to corner Pac-Man. Inky gets a slick haircut and shades, and will split into a mirror image and corner Pac-Man from both sides of the screen. And Clyde just becomes fatter and horks pellets back onto the stage, extra large pellets that slow Pac-Man down further. And because of Clydes dumb AI that more or less avoids Pac-Man, it actually becomes quite a nuisance. It gets better, all of those abilities (Minus barfing pellets) are mechanics Pac-Man can use as well. There are dash pads that let Pac-Man boost like Blinky. It temporarily stuns ghosts Super Pac Man style, and you can even barely cut corners to make some cool getaways. There are jump pads that bounce you to another pad across the stage. There are items that let you split into two like Inky, and eat pellets on both sides. Theres an item that sucks all the ghosts into the center, trapping them in a pot/bowl for a few seconds. And, the art style is really nice. It has retro Pac-Man stages, hedge-maze stages, and other cool aesthetics. Alongside some verticality, with stages that go up a level or two for flair. The stages progress in difficulty linearly, you go through 3-5 stages of a particular theme, each introducing more stage elements, like depth, dash pads, bounce pads, etc. And also incorporating more Kinkys to make the game harder. And _spoilers for a 26 year old GBA Pac-Man game,_ there is a final boss. Its a cool cutscene where the four main ghosts are inside a glass cockpit of a huge robot ghost. with hundreds of Kinkys filling into the center of it. The boss battle is extremely fun. its a huge empty checkerboard full of pellets. When you eat the pellets it spews them at the robot to damage it. The boss will dump Kinkys at you to try and catch you, and as you damage it, will start to wildly spin around the stage, until you destroy it.
I remember playing a 3D pac-man platformer on the original Xbox that was actually fun to me back then, I’m a little disappointed you didn’t get that far down the rabbit hole to verify my fever dream lol

in og pac-man, the power pill timer is effectively 0 so it does do nothing. _but_ it actually does do something. technically the ghosts get scared for less than a frame, which is enough to alter the behavior of the ghosts, and they might do things like turn right around. basically, picking up a power pill late game gives the ghosts a free intersection which can be advantageous, or disadvantageous, in some situations.
As a Pac-Man maniac, I’m glad I can hear this man ramble about Pacman games for almost an hour.

@@silverfoil8854 not ANCIENT, it’s about GA pac-man (canonically named pacster) ‘s dad. he looks different in GA because he got a toupee. and to explain the ghost gang's major appearance, personality, power (like being able to Paralyze pac-man by “chomping” him right back) and headcount differences (r.i.p. any chance of seeing a redesigned sue) is because they’re different sets of characters. the original ghosts (including a *male* pinky) were always ghosts, while the new ones were actual undead pac-worlders who got drafted into the PAC-CIVIL-WAR on the losing side, died horribly, and now teamed up with the son of their namesake's arch enemy. as to why they share the names of the ghost monsters, their parents were racist towards them yellow pac-worlders, so they thought naming their kids after notorious criminals was a good idea.

Pac-Man is insane and keeps having new hallucinations (games) and he eats too many pills, only making those hallucinations worse. This really puts a new perspective on Pac-Manias high-score compliment: "you are a Pac-Maniac!"

Two videos now that I am going to plug Retro Game Mechanics. He, again, has a /stellar/ video on the 256 killscreen, why it happens, how it happens, and why it looks the way it does. It's incredibly well made and fun to watch, and also very detailed and nerdy.
He's also got, if I'm not mistaken, two other videos on the pacman ghosts and their ai systems and how they work. I can't distinguish the two in my memory, but I remember clicking on the wrong video once, so I *think* there's two.

Edit: Found it! It's actually a not pac-man game, aka unofficial, but is great just for the level editor alone! It's called "Pac-The-Man X" and is abandonware at this point so is available to download for free on old software repositories

We've been seeing the Pac-Man story in the wrong order all along. Clyde first identified as Tim, then had gender realizations and took on the feminine name of Sue, and now they're nb as Clyde (skipping past the part where Blinky and Clyde switched names for like a decade because what Blinky did in New Mexico is not relevant here)
PAC-LAND is controlled with buttons only instead of a joystick. There was a pair of buttons in the middle to control direction and there were two buttons on the left and right of the directional buttons to jump to support ambidextrous play. That’s why it was controlled with 1, 2, and 3 on MAME.
Fun Pac Fact: at 30:05, grayfruit is completely incorrect in his opinion as the emoji is extremely cute.

The reason pac-land used your number keys, was because it didn't use a joystick, it was a 3 button game, 2 jump buttons on the left and right, and buttons for moving left and right in the middle of the cabinet.

Fun fact about Mania's jumping mechanic: if you jump in front of a ghost that's following you it will slow down while it looks up, so you can basically spam jump to escape from it

I’m QUITE LATE to this, but grayfruit didn’t realize that you can hold A to go faster in Super Pac Man. Just straight up has a go fast button with no penalty. Very odd game.
I'd love to read up on why arcade games like that Pacman rom have that weird startup jumbled garbage sequence. It feels like some sort of decompression, setup or just testing routine where it uses all its memory to do it but doesn't actually care what's on the screen yet. No idea. But I'd love to see an official write up on it.

Alright folks, here's some Pac-Loreᵀᴹ for y'all while we're at it.
The canonical reason why the ghosts chase Pac-Man and his family is because they're assholes, and they find it funny.
Baby Pac-Man and Junior are different characters, but even though Baby got his game first, Junior is the firstborn; considering the intermission of Ms. Pac-Man has him looking just like Baby Pac-Man in the arcade/pinball game (a smaller Pac-Man with no other distinctive features), it's possible the first Baby Pac-Man is just a younger Junior.
Miru was going to show up in Pac-Man World, but she wasn't included because Pac & Pal wasn't released in America at the time, and the developers didn't knew who she was, whoops.
Blinky's kid is called Yum-Yum (Ren-Ren in Japanese), and she's Junior's girlfriend, which is why Blinky is so pissed with him. She hasn't showed up in any games besides a cameo in the Namco Arcade website, since Midway is fucking dead, and they took half the characters' copyrights with them.
The new ghosts in Pac-Mania are called Spunky and Funky, and they're cousins.

I am very upset not to see Pac-Man Arrangement. Its one of my favorite Pac-Man games ever!
I had it in a Namco Pac-Man collection for the GBA.
It follows the standard formula, but with one new ghost, "Kinky". It had glasses, and was a pale orange. I dont know what his AI was, but he was virtually useless, and not really introduced until about 3 levels in. _Then he throws a kink into the game._ Kinky has the ability to fuse with another ghost and power them up. Blinky grows horns and wears boxing gloves, and will charge at Pac-Man. Pinky grows bunny ears and will leap across the stage to corner Pac-Man. Inky gets a slick haircut and shades, and will split into a mirror image and corner Pac-Man from both sides of the screen. And Clyde just becomes fatter and horks pellets back onto the stage, extra large pellets that slow Pac-Man down further. And because of Clydes dumb AI that more or less avoids Pac-Man, it actually becomes quite a nuisance.
It gets better, all of those abilities (Minus barfing pellets) are mechanics Pac-Man can use as well. There are dash pads that let Pac-Man boost like Blinky. It temporarily stuns ghosts Super Pac Man style, and you can even barely cut corners to make some cool getaways. There are jump pads that bounce you to another pad across the stage. There are items that let you split into two like Inky, and eat pellets on both sides. Theres an item that sucks all the ghosts into the center, trapping them in a pot/bowl for a few seconds. And, the art style is really nice. It has retro Pac-Man stages, hedge-maze stages, and other cool aesthetics. Alongside some verticality, with stages that go up a level or two for flair.
The stages progress in difficulty linearly, you go through 3-5 stages of a particular theme, each introducing more stage elements, like depth, dash pads, bounce pads, etc. And also incorporating more Kinkys to make the game harder.
And _spoilers for a 26 year old GBA Pac-Man game,_ there is a final boss. Its a cool cutscene where the four main ghosts are inside a glass cockpit of a huge robot ghost. with hundreds of Kinkys filling into the center of it. The boss battle is extremely fun. its a huge empty checkerboard full of pellets. When you eat the pellets it spews them at the robot to damage it. The boss will dump Kinkys at you to try and catch you, and as you damage it, will start to wildly spin around the stage, until you destroy it.
