Just trying to do my part
Lesson 1 … lets train plugging in plugs …
Don’t fix what isn’t broken Nvidia… just wasted over an hour of my time trying to figure this cable situation out for my new 4090. Thanks for the video!
I'm sorry you had to deal with that but better safe then sorry! I'm glad it helped, if you have any more questions about your 4090 lmk!
If you're spending $1500+ on an enthusiast piece of hardware, you should be doing all necessary research to know what you're getting into. Does the 12hvpwr plug suck? Yes. But you should've known that before buying 🤔

Just ordered mine. I bought a Gigabyte RTX 4090 and I’m so freaking excited!
That's awesome you won't be disappointed!!!
IF your GPU comes with a 4 plug adapter, use the included adapter fully.. don't use one less plug and DO NOT DAISY CHAIN THE PSU CABLES.. You are introducing a variable that NVIDIA removed themselves in testing and the quad plug is included for when the GPU actually tries to pull UP TO 600W which can be done without manual overclocking. If it was meant to be used with less than what came in the box, it would have been included in the box that way.
As long as you use 3 individual pcie cables going into their own ports on the GPU you are fine
But what about the corsair cable???
@@mattfire8579 The corsair cable which is 2x8 pin to 16 pin is enough. it is rated for 600W. each cable can deliver 300w
@senbonzakura662 You're putting more power demand on your 12v PCIE rails. Unless you have a power supply that has a 12vhpr cable, OR are using a 16pin to two or three 8pin cable like the cablemod cable(the one that plugs directly into the pcie ports on the PSU, not with that janky 16pin to 4x8pin one that came with your card) you're risking shorting something out and bricking the card or the PSU, or the entire system. With modern GPU's, using those pigtail daisy chain cables is a massive risk. There is a reason why bigger creators don't do it and have either the cablemod cable that goes straight from the PSU to the GPU, or multiple, single 8pin pcie cables for the adapter.
@senbonzakura662 If your cables are a single 6+2 thats fine, the pigtail/daisy chain that is another 6+2 or an 8pin, shouldn't be used. You need a standalone 6+2 or 8pin PCIE cable for each port on that adapter cable, so if it has 4 pcie 8pin ports, you need 4 cables. If you don't have 4 pcie 8pin cables or 6+2pin cables or a mix of them, your PSU is old or underpower spec for a 4090.
ATX 3.0 only has added low power mode to allow better efficiency at idle, that's what the sense cables/pins are for. If you don't have ATX 3.0 it means nothing for performance, just that it will be using just a few more watts at idle. Feel free to use to two connector cable, just be aware that now you have to make sure every connection is secured
Side note; if your PSU has multiple 12v rails and each pair of 8-pin connectors are on deferent rails you will need to make sure you plug in one 8-Pin from each rail to make sure you don't overload one rail. I saw that back in the day with extreme OC'ing on GPU's with two 8-pins. There's usually a chart on your PSU telling you
The 3 plug and 4 plug are simply for redundancy from the added failure points by adding more connectors in general, that comes from the horses mouth Jonnyguru. The PCIe 5.0 power connector IS the same as two 8 pin connectors with redundancy taken out just to make the connector smaller, again.. Jonnyguru's words.. and the man designs PSU's for Corsair
*could be the multiple 12v rail issue again, if you're forced to use 3+ connectors that will make sure at least one of the connectors is pulling power from the other rail
But you're totally right, the only "failure" point isn't the actual cables or connectors, it's the bad design that allows a false sense of it being fully connected.
Very helpful video on this subject. I'm going with the 16pin to 3x8pin cable from Cablemod for the 4080 to RM850X.

I have the Gigabyte Gaming RTX 4090. NVIDIA says I need at least three connections. Thermaltake includes a single cable to go from the PSU to the GPU and says it'll be fine.
its a different kind of cable as the video explains
@kr00tman I get that, it's just that MVIDIA support was adamant that it had to be wjth a 3 or 4 prong connection.
Early on it was said it was due to bending at the plug, now it's claimed it's not pushing the plug in firmly enough. It's coming across like they're trying to gaslight people into thinking that being given an adapter made from the plastic that's not up to the task is their fault. Heaps of people now are apparently smart enough to earn enough money to buy a high end card but somehow too dumb to plug it properly into the easiest to see and access connector port I've ever seen. If so many people are having problems with it it's got to be something wrong with the connector.
So it's been confirmed by people outside nivida so that helps, but I for sure get what your saying
I literally saw someone in a UA-cam comment saying "they should just make the connector's material as metal". Now imagine how much would Nvidia AND the other companies which provides different models of the 4090. THEY would lose because alot of money because of this
@@ТЫКНИТЕСЮДА yeah some times people don't fully understand everything that goes into this
It's been proven that's its directly from bending, not plugging all the way, and debris. Search around on UA-cam. You'll see a few vids on it
Also, it was a very small percentage of the tens of thousands of 4090s out there...
From what I understand it’s 150 wants a plug so if you have three you’re doing 450 W max and when you add the fourth one that gives you a total of 600 W total power out to the card. Linus actually got it to work on two at 300 W on a 600 W power supply if I remember right. It wouldn’t run on just 150 W long and short. Don’t try this at home boys and girls. Personally, I’m running to three and the max I seen out was 450 W, but I have ordered from cable mod the four so I can go to 600 Watts. I seen some guys pulling 3000 MHz and I believe you can only do that with a 4 connection and 600 W
Is it true that the cable and the connector on the GPU can be plugged and unplugged only 12 times? After 12 times the connector will be destroyed.
Is it true? Thank you.
@@oldi184dang really ? That’s crazy I do hear people in videos say not to plug and unplug unless you absolutely have to because it’s fragile and will not connect properly over times you do it. And can cause cables to have that slight melting of the pins.

@@kr00tmanmining Hey man. I put the card in the other day and the performance is insane! I’m not able to put my tempered glass on my case because it’ll bend the cord too much. Is it normal for the base of the cord to get kinda warm? Just making sure.
@@aarondunnmedia that's awesome and as long as you installed it right it should be fine
@@kr00tmanmining Sweet bro thanks for your videos! They helped me out a ton with it.
This was helpful. Thanks buddy
I am glad I could help! I hope you enjoy your new gpu over the holidays!!!
So if your psu has the 600 watt 12vhp pin you just plug it in from psu to gpu ? Am I understanding this right ?
Yup
What about 4070 ti, is it the same? because i have 3 8pin comes with the card and nvidia said to only plug 2 of them.
Thanks for the video though ❤
That's a good question, I haven't looked into it, let me check tomorrow and I'll get back to you!
@@kr00tmanmining any word?
i bought the strix 4090 (OC) edition , is it fine to plug only 3 out of 4 adapters since my psu only has 3 pcie cables?
Yea you just won't be able to oc it, which you honestly don't need to do
Will my corsair hx1000 from 2020 only pull 450 watts with the direct replacement cable from corsair?
Very good video, thank you.
Is it safe to plug 12 pin connector if power supply is around 1000w ? And one is having lets say 4080. I am confused. This is so messy, 1st with am5 mess of amd with slow boot with mobos, Intels insane high temp cpu and now NVedia wanted make sure they also stay in news for wrong reasons
Will the 12VHPWR cable work on Corsair AX850i (Type 3) PSU?
Check their website and it will tell you there
How's that going for you?!
@@kr00tmanmining Well the table on the website is bit confusing but what I gathered from it that all the PCI-E cables are the same with Type 3 and 4 PSU so type 4 PCI-E cables are compatible with Type 3 PSI (my AX860i). 12VHPWR cable is type 4 PSU ( for example; Corsair AX1600i ) cable, which technically means is also compatible with my PSU which is Type 3 PSU, right?
@@zaselimgamingvideos I'm glad you figured it out
What if i only have 2 8pin cables? Is it enough?
hello so my question is that, I bought a Corsair hx850 80+ platinum psu because im planning to upgrade to a rtx 4080 which needs 3 8 pin cables, when the psu arrived I found out that it only has 2 separate 8 pin pcie cables with daisychains at the end of each, is it ok for me use 1 cable daisychain and 1 separate 8 pin pcie cable? or do I need to upgrade my psu again. PS, I dont get corsair, the older version of the Hx850 had 3 separate 8 pin pcie cables with daisychains so why did they change it now to only having 2 separate 8 pins, and the other kicker for me is that this PSU has 3 4+4 EPS power cables instead of 2 like what the hell is up with that?
Buy the Corsair cable adapter and you should be fine
Oh wow, I ordered 3 Pin PSU RGB cables from Lian-Li? Will I be okay with those?
Just make sure they work with your psu and you should be good
If I don't want to overclock but undervolt and power limit can I still use the three plugs?
Yes
I am not sure if I plugged in the 12vhpwr cable correctly and I want to re-plug it. But I can't unplug it. How do I unplug it?
What do you mean you can't replug it?
@@kr00tmanmining It is plugged in and I want to unplug and replug it so I hear a click sound. ButI cannot unplug it as it is too tight. I guess I need to press on the latch while applying force.
@@chuliu1 just a little bit but, you have to be very careful.
