Often, not going dark enough is something that's very common. If your darks arnt dark enough the portrait will be flat. It's the contrast of lights and darks that make the portrait realistic. The great think with painting is that you can add as many layers as you wish as long as you let the layer before dry. I have uploaded a nose tutorial in acrylics in my acrylic tutorial playlist. That explains the process of starting with the dark layers and how to build up each layer - that video may help. A tip would be, look at a part of the reference photo that's the darkest part. This is usually the eye or nose or black fur in shadow. If they are your darkest values then you know the fur needs to be shades lighter than that or similar of a part of the aninal is in shadow etc. But remember, that you have to put down these darker bases first in order to build your layers. You want to be painting or drawing the fur that is furthest away, closest to the skin first and building from there. If you'd like me to make a video with voice over on this let me know =)

For some reason I’m really struggling with my dog painting because i’m too scared that my colors will get too dark? any tips?
