      @@kiwiworkshop Is that to add some surface area for the adhesive?

    • @michealkilcoyne8219
      @michealkilcoyne8219 Рік тому +2

      @@MasterArkannor that would be doing the opposite and taking away surface area. That relief prevents any material from pushing the joint out beyond flush. Basically just means the tail will sit flat 1st try.

    Just bought me a marking gauge bro.. It has the micro adjuster on it too. I love this tool but it also has this otehr attachment which I haven't gotta name for.. The marking Gauge is sweet though and I'm looking forward tomarking my work now.. I still need to get one of those knives u have there. Are u using Narex chisels? I bought a cheap set to start with. They're those Magnusson chisel set. They're ok but I think they may last a little while until I get a better set.. Great work there mate..

    • @kiwiworkshop
      @kiwiworkshop  Рік тому

      Awesome. Yes, the micro adjuster is nice to have. My chisels are Stanley, they get the job done but I hope to upgrade to higher quality chisels this year. The next tool I'm going to buy is a router plane. There have been a few occasions over the past year where I've needed one and had to find another way to get the job done.

    • @kiwiworkshop
      @kiwiworkshop  2 роки тому +7

      For any beginners watching this, there are many simpler joints to start with. Here is a list of common joints ordered from easy to hard: Butt, Mitre, Pocket, Dowel, Dado (groove), Rabbet, Tongue and groove, Mortise and tenon, Lap, Bridle, Wedged mortise and tenon (through tenon), Dovetail lap (the one in this video), Dovetail. Beyond that, you can venture into Japanese joinery with some very tricky joints!

    When I was learning carpentry, we were taught that a saw cut must be exact, NO chiseling!
    If the saw cut marks were missing so would marks for your work be missing!
    Chiseling takes extra time, and time is money, do not waste money!

    How many times have you chiseled out the wrong area? Just wondering why you find a need to mark the area being chiseled.

    • @kiwiworkshop
      @kiwiworkshop  2 роки тому +1

      In this case, it was mainly for the benefit of the video, since the marking knife lines can be hard to see. Otherwise it's on a case-by-case basis for each project. Sometimes if you have matching profiles, you would mark out the ones to remove to avoid the potential for error.

      If I'm not making a video that's exactly what I do, or not mark it at all. The shading is purely for the benefit of the video, to make it obvious which area is to be removed. I've seen other woodworking UA-camrs do the same. An X or fine pencil lines often don't show up that well on video.
