I first learned of her when I bought a book by her called the Tofu Tollbooth in the 90's. Listened to a few songs on Mortal City and didn't get into her at that point. What changed my mind was the song "After All" on the Green World...just, wow....
Great song. The video is plain and simple but it's a relief from all the other videos. I especially like the line, "I'm my own sovereign nation." Excellent. :)
She's wonderful. I am just finding her music now. Public TV used that Joan Baez album, Ring Them Bells, as a reward to donors, and that's how I heard of her, from You're Aging Well.
I was just listening to an old "Best of Kirville" mix i had made, and thoughtI'd check out Dar on Y/T...this is nice, she's super talented...but my fav is still "Thje Babysitter's Here"!!! Just sayin'.....john
Dar will be performing here in Tampa Bay - Capitol Theater in Clearwater to be exact - on Sunday Mar 25, 2018. Going to get tickets tomorrow when they go on sale. GREAT singer, song writer and performer!!
Hey Dar (if you ever read these comments) - Google Lyrics seems to think Elvis Costello wrote your Great Unknown song (he did write another song by that name). Might want to have them fix it.
I know change is a bad thing, Breaks me down into a sorry sad thing, Not some iridescent grateful butterfly I'll resist with defiance Not the power of a mystic silence I will fight the dizzy spiral of goodbye . And it's alright, it's alright, it's alright It's alright, it's alright, it's alright . Please don't say you don't love me Never dangle any sword above me With the kind of change that severs me in two Give me amber rising glasses Can you slow it down like molasses As I salvage my old self away from you . And it's alright, it's alright, it's alright It's alright, it's alright, it's alright It's alright, it's alright, it's alright . Because I have seen insane things All those grand historic paintings Morning light on polished swords and burnished pride Ancient smiles encased in whalebone Spines of steel from head to tailbone Cannons poised to blast the turning of the tide . It's a sad and a strange thing But it's time and I am changing Into something good or bad, well that's your guess I'm my own sovereign nation Dedicated to a transformation Marching on with this target on my chest . Oh yes, it's alright, it's alright, it's alright It's alright, it's alright, it's alright [Repeat: x5]
Saw her in March this year, had the privilege of meeting her after the show, she is as beautiful, as her songs, as witty as her lyrics. Did you see her in April? If you did, hope you enjoyed her performance.
Why do people insist on over-analyzing a pop/rock song? Just kick back and listen and let the music do what it's supposed to do. Make you feel something.
+ardalla535 the butterfly presumably grateful to be a butterfly after going through a presumably painful transformational process (just imagine being wrapped in a cocoon and sprouting wings- shit gotta hurt)
It's a brilliant lyric is what it is. The song seems to be about how painful change is for her, and she's contrasting it with the cliche of "the caterpillar's death is the butterfly's grateful birth", the pollyanna saying people throw around for how freeing as easy big changes are.
@@dnhxusjjs I think she's actually contrasting her reaction to change with the cloyingly sweet cliche we all have of the caterpillar's dying and emerging full of joy at having wings. She's having a tougher time with her process. Hence the chorus of her continually trying to convince herself she'll be fine.
They dont make them like this anymore. You should just have a simple video of you recording. No need for all the nonsense. Its not you and you know it:)
Why is she even bothering to stoop to New Country production techniques to break through, the genre is as misogynistic as metal nowadays, they'll never accept her. You're a singer-songwriter, make singer-songwriter recordings.
+Jenny Sjolund are you sure she can do whatever she wants? I read somewhere that some people aren't actually allowed to do whatever they want and she might be one of them.
She has not aged one day from the time she was one of queens of the FM radios in the 70s.
What? Her first album was released in 1990
I'm completely humbled by her talent. Melody, rythmn, soul, balls, feel, songwriting, performance, harmony, authenticity... A TRUE artist.
I first learned of her when I bought a book by her called the Tofu Tollbooth in the 90's. Listened to a few songs on Mortal City and didn't get into her at that point. What changed my mind was the song "After All" on the Green World...just, wow....
God has surely blessed her😊
Just discovered this, instantly likeable.
Dar has to be the greatest lyricist of the twenty-fist century.
Oh, come on now ! Lucinda Williams to name one other female..

Come to Washington State Dar.
This song is perfect for me today!
It’s more than alright
She's coming to town soon, and I can't wait. I first saw her with Joan Baez. Dar Williams is wonderful!
Dar Williams is great - great songwriting, great voice.
Nothings alright. But love your music!!!
💗🙏💗
She's humble ...it had to take some kind of mystic science to create this wonderful song! 😋👍
glad to see her put out a light tune.. hope she grabs some money from it... the Mortal City stuff is where she really shines forever
I love her voice! She even wrote an awesome novel called Amalee!
Good voice.. Nice song..

Her lyrics are great too!

Wait. Dar did videos?!?!? Why did no one tell me?
Dar in Jersey this week 4/8.
Saw her in March this year, had the privilege of meeting her after the show, she is as beautiful, as her songs, as witty as her lyrics. Did you see her in April? If you did, hope you enjoyed her performance.
vevo dose blow but if not for it we would all be paying to use youtube. So count ur blessings

Tim Dillon mentioned you. I am glad :)

🖤
This video is 90's AS FUCK!!!! Rock on, Dar. :)
This song is better than alright
She's my teachers sister!
Why is it that this video stops at 0:54 every time I try to play it?
Yeah............It's alright
@cortez42 - Any view of Dar is just fine in my book... :)
suzanne vega meets joan armatrading. nice.
Dar was totally college to me. I kind of fell off after The Green World. Her early works were the best, IMHO
Agreed. But what a body of work it was! Several classic albums of stunning songs.
a 'grateful butterfly'? what exactly is that?

@@markw4206 or digging deep into the painful reality of the cliche
is she married?
Jennifer Anniston in her singing alter-ego
There is kind of a resemblance. But Dar is much more talented in her line of work IMO.
yeah, if Pheobe gave her singing lessons...
They dont make them like this anymore. You should just have a simple video of you recording. No need for all the nonsense. Its not you and you know it:)
what in the world is she wearing?
It's called a "skirt and blouse."
Why is she even bothering to stoop to New Country production techniques to break through, the genre is as misogynistic as metal nowadays, they'll never accept her. You're a singer-songwriter, make singer-songwriter recordings.
+Adam J Duncan breakfast for breakfast, breakfast for lunch, breakfast for dinner, breakfast for brunch.
+Adam J Duncan Dar WIlliams can do whatever the hell she wants.
+Jenny Sjolund are you sure she can do whatever she wants? I read somewhere that some people aren't actually allowed to do whatever they want and she might be one of them.
We're sure she can do whatever the hell she wants.
Well yeah, similar to how I can write my comments with spelling errors to lessen the quality, I concede that yes you are correct I can do that.
not her best. Not a fan of this song.
