@@Τοπαλικάριτουκάμπου It depends on what era you mean. In the United States at least, in the 17th or 18th century, paper was very expensive, so people used very small sheets. Not to be “that gal” but you should be wearing gloves when handling this. The paper is very delicate and the leather cracked a lot. The oils on your fingers will increase the deterioration of the diary. If you don’t have any intention on preserving this than whatever but if you want to keep this intact for a while to show your future children or whomever then wear gloves to keep it in good shape.
This is actually not true. It's a common misconception that people should wear gloves when handling old paper or parchment. It's true that when handling many old objects you should preferably wear nitrile (non reactive) gloves, but it's discouraged with books. Parchment actually benefits from oils in hands because it's made of leather, while paper, which may get stained or damaged, is generally ok as long as you make sure hands are clean and dry when handling it. Gloves are discouraged, because the lack of feeling in your fingers makes you much more likely to drop or tear paper. So just wash your hands and be careful. More important for long term preservation is storage. Depending on the type of paper you should keep it in conservation grade packing and in the dark 🙂 Source: I work in a museum.
That’s actually entirely wrong. You should have clean and dry hands, gloves can lead you to harming books more by lack of texture on the skin. Edit: saw above much more detailed comment haha I’m a book collector and so do a fair amount of research on the topic but I do not work in a museum.

Jessica: Her hand writing was scribblily. Me:... you mean curvise...? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yes, i would love if you post each dairy entry and post it on their date!!! That would be so intriguing!
I think she literally meant scribbly. If you look at some of the words, they're not written properly, with some of the letters actually turning into a bunch of scribbles.
Helvetica Scenario era correct pen nib and ink - copperplate . Cursive . Scribble cursive isn’t a thing ... children were taught a style in schools and it was very important to have good hand writing . Drilled into children at an early age . Kids took pride in it .... yes she would have her own handwriting but it was never far from what was taught. Scribble cursive wasn’t taught . The irony of this is your name .. helvetica is the most commonly used font in the modern age . Most readable actually. Hilarious
I wish there was more like this. I love hearing from the people of the day what their living was like, also props to translating. From what I’ve come to understand, a lot of times in the past it didn’t matter as much of how it was spelt than how the word sounded. Good job.

It’s honestly crazy how this diary survived this long, it really makes me want to write my own diary and maybe in a hundred or so years someone will find mine and read it! Also did anyone see how beautiful her cursive handwriting was!?
It looks to be she may have rewrote it and then there were alot of X's and checkmarks through the pages which looked like she planned to rewrite it again as a final draft so this could have been the 2nd draft.
@@jessicavill How do you know for sure this diary is from 1895? I'm very skeptical because from the inside the pages and writing look so fresh and neat, like it had just been written. I loved seeing my name on the first page, it’s not too common anymore so seeing it in the Diary was really cool💕. The best thing I’ve ever found was a love letter written from a man to a woman, undated, stuffed into an astrology book on my mom’s shelf. It wasn’t addressed to anyone in the family, so it must’ve been written and hidden before she owned it sometime in the 70’s. It was so sweet it almost felt wrong to read 😂

If someone was to read my diary 150 years later, they would read some pretty interesting things.
Could you please read more of that? I don’t know about anyone else but I loved that and everything that has to do with Victorian.
Jessica: Her hand writing was scribblily.
Me:... you mean curvise...?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, i would love if you post each dairy entry and post it on their date!!! That would be so intriguing!
Maybe it was a messy scribbly cursive. People get there own personal scribbly cursive.
Hilarious
Her diary all nice and neat my diary ripped all scribbled on and half of the book is some where in my room
I could totally see this diary as a legit book
I would’ve just listened to you read it but I love all the imagery, so well done! Thank you for sharing 💕
I love this! How did you find it? I would love to own a few diary’s dated a 100 years ago! Love you and your videos so much ❤️
I wish there was more like this. I love hearing from the people of the day what their living was like, also props to translating.
From what I’ve come to understand, a lot of times in the past it didn’t matter as much of how it was spelt than how the word sounded. Good job.
This was so interesting!would love to hear more! Loved it!! Where did you get the bow in your ponytail? It's so cute!!! Also for some reason you remind me just a little bit of Selena Quintanilla!!
You live such an active life!!! I love your videos too. And yes it would be really fun to hear more out of the journal!!! Thank you!
WTF I need to find things like this
Lazuli
Same here
I discovered your channel like an hour ago and I'm already obsessed with your videos oml
May I ask how you acquired this diary?
This gurl doesnt need medias
Medias need her
It’s honestly crazy how this diary survived this long, it really makes me want to write my own diary and maybe in a hundred or so years someone will find mine and read it! Also did anyone see how beautiful her cursive handwriting was!?
Very interesting! Thank you very much! Please continue, we’ll wait 😍💜💜💜
Kinda reminds me of Amy's trip in Europe in "Little Women".
Jess always blessing us with original content. *YES QUEEN* 👏🙌
1:08 says this is “Copy of Journal” I wonder what happened to the original?
Looks like she rewrote it and planned to rewrite it again bc theres x's and checkmarks near sentences!
I love this! I'd love more videos of the journal!
How did you come into possession with this diary? I find it very interesting!
Loving your autumn vibes, the colours suit you so well 🍁🍂🧡
How does she does this wow I can never find any vintage things
Your have to go to antique stores or estate sales to find something like this. : )
Sounds interesting...thanks for sharing with us Jessica!!!👍🏿😎💯
This is just a copy of the journal though right?
1:08
It looks to be she may have rewrote it and then there were alot of X's and checkmarks through the pages which looked like she planned to rewrite it again as a final draft so this could have been the 2nd draft.
@@jessicavill How do you know for sure this diary is from 1895? I'm very skeptical because from the inside the pages and writing look so fresh and neat, like it had just been written. I'm not accusing you, just maybe someone else. It's just so hard to believe that after 124 years that the pages and writing (especially when done in pencil) wouldn't appear more worn or messy after all this time has passed.
This is amazing! What a unique glimpse into life in the past. Thank you!
I have love letters from WWII
I loved this, please do more!
