+Wolfdragon92584 Good call on Thunder Force II & Task Force Harrier Ex. Thunder Force II often stays in III & IV's shadow but it's f***ing awesome as well, I love them all equally (even if TF IV is clearly a step ahead in technical terms). & Task Force Harrier Ex, while an average game (it has a few neat aspects though), has some good music & some of the best digit voices on the system. On other hand you can't mention Revenge of Shinobi & Shinobi III without mentioning Shadow Dancer as well! It has some great music & one of my favorite ending themes out of the whole Mega Drive library. In case you never played this game, give it a go, some solid arcade action await you there.
When you think this game couldn't be more difficult, then you finish level 6 and the next thing you experience is the game welcoming you with this masterpiece like saying to you "now the game begins" 1:13:22
I beat this game at my brothers when he owned it. That last level..my heart was pounding, palms sweating losing grip on the controller, not breathing and dare not blink. Greatest gaming experiance of my life. Since then i still have that cartridge that ive re labeled and i try from time to time but cant get past the later levels. Heard it for what felt like the first time on a good model 1 i picked up recently with some studio headphones and was blown away.
Man, I remember playing this on my dads Genesis when I was like 7 or 8. The music was so cool, and I genuinely felt like a badass when I pulled off a clutch maneuver, or rescued all the miners and collected all the items, making it back to the landing pad with just enough fuel. I even recall building the main ship and some of the enemy robots with LEGO, haha! Never played another game like it, and I find myself going back to it from time to time. It's definitely an experience.
I'm in the process of finally giving this an honest play-through after owning the game for many years and never devoting much time to it. It requires a lot of memorization and is VERY unforgiving; one mistake can cause a game-over which can get frustrating later in since you often don't know what to do or where to go (pre-mission briefings can be vague) and the game punishes you for making a mistake or going the wrong direction, and given that the levels can take a long time to complete and require much concentration, it can take quite awhile to replay the levels to get to where you died at just to lose again for still not knowing what to do. Music is definitely my favorite part of the game. (speaking of music, Boards of Canada rules)
Zer0Funk Good luck, I can't get past level 3. I've always been bad at mission based games, but Sub-Terrania is even more vague than most. At least with your Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike games you have a map you can look at. Also congratulations on being the 2nd person to recognize my avatar. :)
When i was kid i managed to finish it. Actualy hardest part was last level, not even the last boss. If you managed to deal with gravity before water level, it actualy forced you to readapt once again.
I didn't realise that the intro & title themes went on for so long! Absolutely loved this game and its soundtrack, now I feel like I've discovered a new gem
Yeah. Me too in childhood. But today I know why. Jasper Kyd was a member of the demo-scene with very long pieces of graphics 'n techno-rave music just like here in Sub Terrania and of course Batman and Robin, Red Zone. It was a normal for such style of music. And its really great and special!
***** Tallarico is a better composer when he doesn't have to do things with FM synthesis. I do think that Earthworm Jim 1 had a good soundtrack but the second was a mess compared to the SNES version.
I liked Cool Spot on the Genesis better than the SNES. But I agree with you on EWJ2, the SNES sounded way better. The problem with the Genesis version, is that Tommy tried to make it sound like the SNES. Some came out good, others, not so much.
It realy feels like it's not Genesis music today. Given Mr. Kyd wrote his own driver in order to get these sounds... its mindblowing (Z80 programming isn't easy shit). Alone, the music make the game. Then the game is fun by itself, for those who find the game hard, you have to practice and there's tons of secrets and hidden 1ups. Once you got the grip on the controls... get ready for the two last stages... they are abismaly hard, but fucking satisfying when you finish them. This is brilliant game, but yeah, it could have been a bit easier, even at easy mode.
this was one of the first games I owned. Hearing this after so long, I feel like it had a definite influence on the kind of music I grew to like. And the later underwater portions broke me, beating this game seems a mythical feat
One of the first games I ever have memories of playing. Couldn’t have been older than 6. Needless to say I was probably terrible at it but I definitely loved playing it.
I just started playing this game yesterday. I had heard really mixed reviews, but in my opinion this game is brilliant and along with Atomic Runner is one of my favorites on the system. The soundtrack is probably the best on the genesis that I can think of.
Kyd also did other Genesis OST's, namely Adventures Of Batman And Robin, X-Men Mind Games, and Red Zone/Hard Wired. Those OST's are more "dark" and foreboding compared to this one.
I did the same thing you did [but not as long 8)] utilizing a newly bought patch cable for the Sega Genesis - hooked up directly to an analog stereo system. The console and game belonged to a friend of mine who played the game to death. I did the recording to a cassette tape, which I still have to this day! XD
Ah yes, I spent so many hours not to crash that damn ship... OST Beautifully done once again by Jesper Kyd. Thank you for uploading these quality OST and taking me down memory lane.
Mission 5 was tricky. Only one fuel pod and you use a lot lugging that heavy-ass reactor core over to the monster. Had to work fast and make no mistakes.
I've loved this game for over 20 years, and after reading about the soundtrack on HG101, they gave a shoutout to a few groups that influenced this sound. Check out The Orb if you're into this sound. Great artist!!!!

Yeah, these studios were audacious and inprudent. Maybe they will cycle back in 20 years. Nowadays games just suck. This specific game was a commercial failure, though.
I was playing Batman & Robin on Genesis a few weeks ago at a friend's house. I never played it before and could tell right away it was Jesper Kyd from my playing Sub-Terrania. We checked online and indeed, it is!
Carousel is made crazy. Funny enough the song enough touches ever feeling that this game gives off. From Immense frustration, to the Isolation, and your failure to stay alive in such a damned location. Always the damn title screen music with Jesper...
The synth bass and gritting synth guitars never cease to amaze me. Would recommend headphones. It is a good way to get through textbook readings for sure. :)
This was one of the hardest sega games I've ever played. I'd actually turn the game on and go into the options menu just to listen to the songs because It was too hard for me to actually get to any of the levels to hear the music that way.
Last? Of what? Genesis OSTs? Jesper Kyd soundtracks on the Genesis? The type of music used on the Genesis? Because none are the answer yes. There's plenty more to discover with the Genesis, and they're all just as awesome as this.
No, you are wrong. MD/Genesis sound chip was a more simple YM2612 and was a regular 4OP FM chip like on the old computers of the 80s. Even arcade machines had the more complex model of the FM chip (YM2608, 2151, 2610). The DX7 synth is a 6OP FM system based on two (!) discrete chips - one YM21280 for the sound generator and other one YM21290 for the envelopes. But about the sound - yes, some of the FM tones of the 4OP chips are really close to 6OP. Megadrive/Genesis soundchip was like it have the Yamaha DX21 synth. It have exactly the 4OP FM chip.
