Awesome details!! I appreciate the willingness to demo these advanced techniques with this type of training partner. So many times we see the dummy being used as a mma punching bag, so much more can be learned with a dummy. Thanks Aaron
Great content as usual, thanks for sharing! I'm getting the same question over and over again about the possibility of using the SMARTY for closed guard... So many possibilities: armbar, triangle, guillotine, omoplata, kimura, multiple sweeps, back takes, transitions to other guards... Was meaning to film that vid myself, but been so damn busy. I'd be happy to refer people to it if you make it: Overview of Closed Guard Game ft. the SMARTY! I know the demand is there, it will most likely get lots of views. Looking forward to seeing your approach to this situation! - Patrick
Awesome video as always! I love your stuff and I have a couple of questions for you on 1/2 guard butterfly. I appreciate you taking the time whenever you can to answer. Thank you! 1) In other videos, I have seen Giancarlo (sp?) try to flatten you by shifting his weight onto the butterfly hook. This happens to me or sometimes my partner will "surf" and just come off the hook by balancing on it. Any advice there? 2) In your BJJ Fanatics 1/2 guard butterfly series, in volume 2, Ty gets cross face, and turns his hips towards you, but you then sweep with the butterfly hook. I have tried this, but I often have partners that defeat that butterfly counter by a) using their free leg to base strong by shooting it out and counter-pushing against me, and b) walking the trapped leg in a heel-toe manner to where it is almost at a 90 degree angle (or close). So I have trouble getting the sweep since my partner has head control with the cross face, a strong base with the free leg giving a counter-push, and the trapped leg off the ground/90 degrees. Any thoughts? 3) I also love to play lasso guard. Can you do a video of a transition from 1/2 butterfly to lasso? THANK YOU!!
Hey, that’s a bit to unpack here. I’ll do my best. 1) when most people try to flatten me it’s not an issue, GC does a great job of pinching his legs so he limits the mobility of my hook. When he does that the only options are to go underneath him or force them to spread their base. We’ve rolled so much he knows my game really well. He’s the best half guard passer I’ve ever met. 2) when someone shifts their hip with a cross face I use my arm that would normally block their posting hand to grab a grip on their knee so they can’t post their free leg. 3) yes for sure!

My dummy has genuinely helped me progress. Even at my level. Specifically this dummy. Thanks for the kind words and support 🙏🏻
Whoa I cannot attack the foot like that yet but I probably will get a dummy. Seems like a good investment. Thank´s for sharing.
Thank you!
Of course 🙏🏻

Hey Patrick, I’ll film it for sure! Excited for it.
Great stuff! I noticed that the dummy ends up lying on what was my butterfly hook. Do you try and get that left knee on the inside?
Not sure if I understand what you mean

Great stuff as usual but PLEASE get a lapel mic. Give me your address and I'll mail you one.
Hahaha I’m going to! I had filmed a lot one day (the last few vids) and sound was off a bit. Next set of video will have lapel mic!
