you can actually become more fine tuned to this "all purpose" sound by observing the body language of the cat and what time that cat is doing it. cats are creatures of habit and tend to want the same things at the same times of day. Plus the extra smart kitties will prompt you to follow them and lead you to what they want whilst doing this all purpose meow :)
my cat prefers pawing/lightly scratching at things to get my attention, not hard enough to leave marks but loud enough to make me notice. if it's late enough in the morning and I haven't gotten up yet -- even if I did get up briefly to fill her food dish -- she'll start pawing at the bedroom curtains, then my bedside table, then eventually my headboard 😅
Mine want to be held they stand on something and climb up on my shoulder and arm or they jump onto my shoulder or my back of I'm leaning over or they stand and pat me and make the mmmrrrrrrrow cooing sound. And I have one that if I stop scratching her head she lightly places her teeth on my then slides to just her lips are touching me and it's so weird... Only Whisper has done that. My 2 favorite things cat's do is chatter when they see prey and hunt and momma cats speaking to kittens!! I've had some special felines that sadly have passed away or disappeared. The first tortie was unique in so many ways as she grew. As a baby she had white thin circles around her eyes like specticals. As she grew her yellow orange color was gold instead and her eye color matched that golden color. She was so pretty. I watched her catch a kitten as it fell off the porch and helped it up. Her sisters kid. Smidge was a gorgeous tortie who had the sweetest soft low voice .s Coyote got her. Then my itty bitty with long hair and so silky soft and a strange color pattern that my husband refused to let me wear her off the bottle bc he liked to hold her and see her hold the bottle on her own and seeing her tongue and the way she laid in his arms was just so darn cute. She vanished. I can't bring myself to talk about the rest and the babies . But there . Now u know some of my cat stories and the cats that were special but I've had many many more than those and all were born here or were strays that I had to tame and did so in less than 2 weeks once I decided to begin the process and it was enough time that I could start getting closer and they wouldn't run.
My cat isn't very talkative but she do wanna wake me up so she sits on my nightstand and squishes my tissue box repeatedly to make a loud POP POP POP POP noise 😑at my old place she would slam the blinds rod against the window frame.
YAYY NOW I CAN TALK TO MY NOT CAT THAT RANDOMLY APPEARS ON MY BALCONY!!!

How do you say "Stop stepping on my hair" in Meowese?

Cats communicate mainly with body language and not by meowing, stop spreading misinformation, there is no such thing as a cat language
Pretty sure you're just imagining what these cats are saying to you. You should probably go outside and talk to some humans.
