  • In this video you're going to learn how to let your little kitten out for the first time.
Basically the video is going to learn you, that it's not such a big deal letting your kitten out for the first time. Also, I'm telling you how I did it.
    Starring:
    The kitten - Mishi
    The dog - Luca
Let me know, if you want me to do another tutorial starring one of my many other pets :)

this made me really miss my friend Cosmos. I got him in 8th grade. he was about 1 year old and a stray. Jet black with yellow eyes. My dad was a school bus driver and cosmos would follow 2 girls to the bus stop every morning. He eventually asked the girls if that was their cat, they said no he just lives under the deck and our mom wants to get rid of him. When my dad and I went to get him from their place...ill never forget how cosmos's eyes lit up when he looked at me. we brought him home the first time in a big cardboard box(makeshift carrier) with holes for handles. instead of being scared of the car, a little bit into the ride he started playfully pawing my hand through the handle hole, no claws out. About the first year he was so close to me that he would stand outside the shower door meowing and was by the front door when i returned from school.
My parents didnt want him to go outside but i started taking him on a leash. he slipped that quicker than you could bat an eye, harnes didnt take much longer lol. I eventually would just lock the leash in full extended so i had more reaction time if he tookoff running. after about a year I would follow him around with out it. soon after I just let him out. Around the time I left for college my dad ended up building him a cat door. I would sometimes put him up in the big tree in the front yard and he would climb all over it. A few times he would end up hanging by his front claws when he messed up... The moment my hands were on him he would let go.
Cosmos lived to be 16.5 years old and died in my lap about 8 months ago. We were waiting for the vet to put him down, he wasnt doing well, I told him "its ok cos, just let go" and he did. I had been so busy with life I had only made it to my parents a hand full of times in the 2 years before his death and it really bothes me. I had a flight about 3 months before he died and drove to my parents so my dad could give me a ride to airport. Cosmos was on the couch when I went inside. I sat down on the floor next to him on the couch and put my hand near him. his paw extended and wrapped around my hand. He knew he was near the end. . the night before he died I went looking for him after dinner, walked down stairs and found him curled up on the lid of shoe box. He hadent really been into boxes for years as he had several cat beds and pretty much unlimited access to the back yard.

Keep your cat inside on 4th of July and the two days before Halloween. Also on Halloween. Especially if they are black.

On July 4th, the fireworks can scare them off. Indoor dogs, especially smaller breeds, are terrified of the noise that fireworks celebrations make, and I imagine many cats may panic as well. On Halloween, cats (black cats in particular) are popular for ritual sacrifice among self-proclaimed witches/satanists. You wouldn't think it's a very common danger, but apparently it happens enough that some shelters won't sell black cats around Halloween or will run extensive background checks on customers throughout the season.

I wish more people would understand cats need outdoor time just as much as dogs do. i had a cat who hated liter boxes so we had no choice but to let him outside, or else he would pee & poo in the houseplants. He learned very quickly how to let us know when he needed out. he loved just laying out in the sun, catching birds & one time a baby bunny which made my mom very mad lol. we were also lucky that he was afraid of cars & would run back into the nearest yard anytime he heard a car coming. he lived almost 20 years. he was the happiest cat i have ever known! he never hissed bit or scratched anyone & wouldn’t go up to strangers while outside. i miss him every day & often wonder how i can make it possible to have a cat that can go outside again. thank you for sharing this!

I had a cat 2 years indoors in the city I brought to upstate NY. I used a harness and 30 foot leash to start him out. He would get way too high up trees and didn't know how to come down at first. Eventually it was a 6 foot leash I wasn't even holding, and he didn't run away. Later he was totally cool with outdoors, and even went on long explorations into the woods and gorges with me. Sweet video!

When I've allowed cats out for the first time I've always walked them on a leash. When I feel comfortable, some days later, I'll take them off the leash but still amble around after them, with a few treats so if they return to me I'll pet and treat them. I find my cats rarely stray out of my yard. They especially love it when they are out and once again I'm outside with them, always with a few treats ready, and an open lap.

Thanks so much. I’ve been trying to find a video like this for ages, I don’t know why more people aren’t searching for this considering millions of people have cats and millions of people probably want to let their cats outside sometimes. Strange this subject seems so obscure, but nonetheless thanks for making this video.

Mariamellia My one is 11 weeks. We go out every day since 6 days ago when I got her. At first I carried her like a baby around. Then took her in a waist bag when she was sleepy. Then with my husband took her out to walk freely in the center of the garden. We kept lifting her back to the center on the neck like a cat mom would do. Regardless of hungry or not. Today, 6th. day I let her walk free in the garden (week 11)...only 10 min of course and I was alone with her. She cannot come back alone as she is too tiny to jump to the window and the door is not my flat door. But I think hungry is a fight and flight state in nature. Hungry cats are ready to run and more agitated. After a tough workout (chase prey toys) and a good meal they are more chilled and content. Tired and won't run around too wildly. Mine gets sleepy and thats the state I want her because the bed is at home and they want to rest in safety. Remember, get to know your cat, they are all different. None of them likes leashes, they are not dogs.

I had my cat for 17yr before she died. uring most of our time together, I moved often but always made sure to get a place with a high balcony or a yar of some sort. I didn't want her to be crossing any roads with more traffic than a driveway. What I learned to be a way to deter this, was to not allow her outside very long, on a daily basis. It seemed the more comfortable she became with the surroundings, the farther she'd roam. She was, of course, spayed so I'm sure that helped as well.
The only time I had a scare/ issue was when she 13yrs and went missing for 5 days (!!) (During the last week before I moved, no less.) I was roaming the alleys yards and streets with fliers on all mailboxes, and talking to whoever glanced my way, at all hours. So glad I did because a lady in a building over had heard meowing from her basement then saw my fliers.
Somehow, my cat had gotten stuck under the duplex, losing her collar in the event and had no way of getting out. By the time I got down to her, she wouldn't come near me and was scared to death. She recovered quickly though. But goes to show anything can happen when you let them out.

my cat shadow would be let outside and would relax, hunt, and chill outside, never going more then 100 feet away from the house. one time i was driving home and i saw her across the street by the storm drain. we hollered shadow what are you doing, and she knew better and ran back to the front door. i really loved shadow and miss her, i still cry to this day every so often. the most brilliant thing i have ever seen a cat do this sit down on the side walk, and look left then right, wait for the car to drive by and walk across the street. i was mind blown and impressed when i saw another cat do that.

If you let a cat out on its own, it will always come back on its own if it has a good owner. Cats also know it's dangerous outside, but like any other living thing, they don't like to be kept in a house or confinement all of the time.

I think the first time I let my cats out was when they were not baby, but still older children. I have an abandoned terrain right next to my house. At first I was always there, first with them, then only watching. Eventually I stopped watching. Cats are very intelligent and they can adapt very well to the new environment AS LONG AS you introduce it to them while they’re still young. If you let a 3 year old cat outside, he may not be prepared for it and may have already missed the window to learn basic outside survival skills (being careful with cars, etc).

My family has had 3 cats that were all outdoor. They have instincts that most people are unaware of. They are probably better off in the wilderness than you are. We never had an "outdoor training program". We just let them out and they would come back home a few days later like it was nothing.

    • @somjasa

Same here. I'm old and have had cats almost my whole life and all of them had been outdoors cats. I always been outside with the kitten from the beginning and no one have ever run away.
They can go under things or hide if they get scared by different sounds but they always came out when hungry. Most important from the beginning has been to leave a door open so they can return in easy when they want to or seek cover.
It's also important to neuter the cat when time is due. The cat will stay home instead of taking off on a looove spree! 😻

So just open the door and let it go. It makes sense. People forget that cats are not far removed from being a wild animal. They know how to take care of themselves. Letting it go hungry is a good idea.

Cats are very special beings and they should be allowed to choose their owners because this is their mission on earth, to help owners who need them. If they run away you probably did not need them. We can just hope they choose us, but make sure your home is very friendly to cats. My cats usually stay, but one time one disappear and I found out later that he was living with my neighbour. Good luck with your cat.

I'd be more scared in a town or city because cars are one of the biggest threats unless there's dangerous wild animals around. It'll definitely come back if it associates you with food. I noticed this person doesn't keep a collar on her cat. You definitely want to do that so people know it has an owner.

Cats are normally outside at night here in Norway.
Cats tend to stay away from busy roads too. Cats always find their way home. They can be gone for days too. It is completely normal. I can see if you never have had cats before that this would freak you out.
many people treat their cat like a human too. lol.

My cat is currently 6 years old. We’ve let him on the front lawn since he was about 3-4 years old. He usually just eats grass. But I have a small room and he doesn’t get along with the other cats in the house so I’ve been letting him outside for 10 minute intervals. And each time he explores further of the backyard. I hope he will be comfy enough to explore further. I will follow him for the first few weeks wherever he goes. Just to make sure he feels safe. But then I’ll let him roam on his own and wait at home with the door open Incase he wants to return. I’ve seen some great gps cat collars that I’ll probably buy, so he can roam and I can easily locate him if he’s been gone a while.

I found a tiny, black female kitten on my front porch. Had her for 4 years now. Coyotes roam my neighborhood at night, so I keep her inside at night. I still worry when I let her out in the morning, but she's got a good set up. Lots of bushes for her to hide in. She stays close to home. She scales my patio fence quickly and easily and I always leave the sliding door open for her when she's outside.

That’s smart to only leave food inside the house so they return.

You should keep him or her inside until the kitten reach a year old or close to that age because he or she is still young he can easily get killed by a hawk or a fox.

I know the feels! I think you should let her out though, not all cats run from home.

Our Cat is nearly 8 month now and we are living in block of two store flat , me and partner considering to let her go out so she get use to go out as well as staying in doors , the concern is that we are both working long hours out , how long would you you recon it's best to leave her outside ? And how am I going to ensure that she'll come back ? Knowing There are other cats around our flat also which she often making communicate with them from sitting on window .
    Thanks

i have 2 cats i care for , a mother and a kitten, in my backyard outside. they are both there every morning and throughout the day. they have never been house cats, as i can't have any pets where i live. the mother had 5 kittens. i rescued 3, momma took 2 for herself, but 1 ended up being eaten maybe. still, 4 kittens survived , 3 have homes, 1 of the kittens lives in my neighbor's house so the outdoor momma cat and her kitten , stay near their brother in my backyard, who lives in my neighbors house. its a weird situation, but its working, as the 2 outdoor cats have quite a few places to hide in, and its a fenced in backyard. ive seen mother cat roaming around my neighborhood complex, but they never stray outside of the complex as there is too much traffic there, and not many cars drive through our subdivision. in my 30 years of living here, i have maybe seen 1 cat ran over. so i know they are fine here. rate of survival is very high when mother cat only has to tend to 1 kitten , and knows other kittens are in good hands.

My house is basically on the motorway and my back and front yard are connected as one. What should i do if my kittens decide to go to the front, I am scared they will run onto the road and get hurt or because it is such a big space, just run away. I would prefer to keep them inside but am scared because in summer it gets super hot and so we usually open all the doors and windows because we dont have aircon, and i don't want my kittens to run outside and die. Also my grandparents are home all day with the doors open so they could just run out, what should i do! Btw i am in school so i cant go looking for them if they are outside

id love My cat to wanter around freely but we oivenonbthe 4th floor and dont have our own Garden so the leash thing is kind of Must have

Letting our cats roam freely isn't possible where we live because of mountain lions, coyotes and bobcats. They're young and active and try to escape. We have leash trained them so they can have some outdoor time, and also so they learn how to recognize their home because one of these days they'll succeed in getting out!
