The Evil Dead (1981) - Movie Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- The original "cabin in the woods" movie gave birth to the splatterfest franchise of The Evil Dead. Demonic possession, chainsaws, and buckets of blood are the ingredients of Sam Raimi's horror premiere. Does The Evil Dead still hold up?

The first Evil Dead is my favorite horror movie of all time. I agree wholeheartedly about your review and what you thought but I love it for how student filmmaker it is and I love how creepy it is
I actually love all three of THE EVIL DEAD
The Evil Dead (1981) is my favourite movie of all time
The final act where its just Bruce Campbell. Its one of the most tension filled final acts of any horror film out there.
Bruces best acting in the film. you see how he was going insane, looking all around paranoid and terrified.
UA-cam: I'll demonitize your soul!
Hahahahahaha
...and they did!
Anthony Hudak Demonitize This.
Cody Leach damn that sucks. Isn’t that why you pushed back the Friday the 13th kill ranking?
@@CodyLeachYT son of a bitch
My favorite movie of all time. Part of it is of course nostalgia since I saw it at a young age and it was incredibly terrifying. You have to love the campiness of the entire franchise!
I saw the original EVIL DEAD at the movies in 1981. I loved it !!! I am 58 now and still watch it every now and then. Great Review !!!!
I've loved evil dead since I was a kid, part 2 has always been my favourite."I'm coming to get you" line scared the shit outta me when I was young.
I can't believe the same guy that made these movies made the Spiderman movies.
The stop motion at the end of the film still disturbs me to this day.
The Evil Dead is such a great little horror movie! It’s so much fun! I love the special effects and gore!! I love it!
I actually still own the vhs for them all lol
Gets notification that Cody’s uploaded an Evil Dead review.
Me: jumps up & down like a child as I watch!
Opening skit was dope man, your production level these days is awesome.
I love the Evil Dead films , Awesome review
I’m this close to getting on Patreon and asking Cody to review the Romero desd series.😂😂
Ash vs Freddy vs Jason was an awesome comic
This movie made me the Horror fan that i am ! Such a classic
THE EVIL DEAD (1981) Sam Rami first film that he did when he was only twenty-one years old and later in his career he did the Spider-Man trilogies.
Abram Sullivan Only 21 Years Old Wow
@@jamesmorant1406 totally
Part 1 was defo the scariest.
Part 2 was a good mix of comedy horror.
Part 3 was a goof off.
I think the original Evil Dead is still superior to the remake. The remake is still great and arguably one of the best horror remakes in recent years, but I still think the practical effects from the original are scarier. I love the white out eyes in the original. In the remake they had like green eyes that weren’t nearly as creepy looking.
I use to love watching this after one to many pints and being very drunk I was latching so much 😂🤣
Awesome review 👍, I like the first Evil Dead movie
I will always love this franchise, I’m ok with it aging not so well! I have to admit, #2 has a special place in my heart! Anyway, loved your intro skit!👻
I love The Evil Dead. Awesome!! Great review Cody💜💙💚💛❤
We watched this at school, don't remember the age (around 13 i think). Still remember how shocked i was afterwards, haven't seen anything this insane before. Majority of the girls and teacher stopped watching after tree rape scene.
I love this franchise but army of my darkness is my favorite great review cody
Mark f mine to. Its cheesy as fuck but damn good!
The trailer was great and so is this review!
It is so great it swallowed my soul.
Ok actually no, but you get the point
Man this movie freaked the living pluck out of me when I first saw it.
when I was about 6 or 7 years old, I remember going to our local video store with my mother a lot. she would go to the comedy or drama section to try and find a movie for the family, and I would ALWAYS go directly to the horror section and just look at the box art. Evil Dead 2 caught me eye every single time, with that creepy shot of the disembodied hand on his neck. I was entranced but also horrified, and I wouldn't end up seeing the movie until I was a teenager. A few years after that I saw the original, and to this day it's still my favorite. I like the serious tone of the movie compared to the comedy of the other ones.
Great review Mr Leach, yeah the effects have dated but this is one of the best independent B' movie horrors ever made, have you watched the documentary of the making of this film talk about a hell of a shoot.
Banned for years over here in England for years part video nasty cull during a ridiculous time in the 80's.
Evil Dead and the series Ash vs Evil Dead...👍👍👍 EXCELLENT!!!
Ive never seen it, however it looks good, imma have to add that to my halloween horror movie nights rotation
I have a question for Mr. Leach.
If Jamie Lee Curtis didn't have carrer she had as a actress, would the Halloween series be any different.
When it comes to horror/humor mixes, being in the right mood when you watch such movies seems crucial to getting into them; could be why your reaction to this series goes back & forth (and why it’s done so on other films you’ve talked about).
Although I often like horror-comedy hybrids (such as Peter Jackson’s early movies like Bad Taste & Dead Alive, which I recommend if you haven’t seen them), I must admit that this film - which, apart from the Alvarez remake, is the most straightforward horror film of the series - is my favorite Evil Dead movie. It does manage to achieve quite a bit of genuine tension & creepiness throughout, and I think the few humorous elements in it were more a byproduct of the production’s limitations (cheap effects & so forth). In contrast, the comedy & goofiness in the later movies is clearly deliberate.
Sam Raimi has said that the biggest influence on him when making the movie was Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead, along with the original Chainsaw, and you can definitely see that here. Even the way the series changed is somewhat reflective of Romero’s own trilogy, as Romero himself has said that he only regarded his first movie as a horror film, and the others as action/adventure pieces mixed with social commentary.
Really looking forward to your views on the other two movies; given what you said at the start of this review, it’ll be interesting to see where the pendulum has stopped when it comes to your shifting opinions on them.
I miss these skits Cody 😢 (thanks for putting me on judgement night that was one hell of a movie)
Thank you. I was just thinking I should try to put more in this years’ reviews.
Come-on Cory , don't be that guy , the guy who READS FROM THE BOOK 🤣🤣🤣
Cody you should review “Drag Me To Hell”
Liked 2 more then 1 as it added the humor this type of camp needs in my view, however the first one was done with far more serious and far less humor. Was fun to see you cover it here and get your thoughts on it :).
Perfect timing Cody, just finished watching the first 2!!!:)
Oh I can’t wait for this Sunday or Halloween. Keep up the great and funny content brother.
And it’s good to know the love shack is back in the background. lol
Thanks for the review. I was in high school when the Evil Dead came out good to hear someone going for practical effectts not all CGI
I love all of them . My favourite horror films. Great vid . Love this chan .
I like this film, but not as much as others do! Still a good film! Great review, Cody!
My favorite horror movie of the 80’s the last 15 mins are gold
Great Review The 1st Evil Dead Is A Classic 10/10 ☆☆☆☆☆
Best Horror movie, no CGI SHIT 🤗
Love your channel man, found it through the It Chapter Two review. You seem like a cool dude. Have you ever heard of the MBTI personality type system. You may find it interesting to learn your type.
So I just watched this film for the first time ever in January. It freaking blew me away and is now my second favorite horror film of all time behind only the original Halloween! I love the low budget to it. To me it is one of the best uses of a camera in a film I have ever seen.
It's a toss up for me though which one I love more this or Army of Darkness. Cant wait for your review of Army of Darkness!!! 2 I like but dont love like so many.
The starz tv series Ash Vs Evil Dead is awesome.
In this movie Ash was more like a final girl type of character that's why he's not acting like this badass hero we know today.
Will you ever do a review of the thing Cody? Heard you mention it so many times but you don’t have a full review😭
The original 1981 film is honestly an all time Favourite for me. I loved it so much, flaws included.
I never loved Evil Dead 2 as much as others. I prefer the scary tone of the first.
I do want to tear into your opion at points lol. but the one ill jump on is Ashley became Ash at the end of the Evil Dead 1
evil dead 2 the beginning was just a quick shorter rehash of the first movie. which is all canon.
then we start off with ash basically in the second movie.
Yea I met Bruce camble this year and he’s the fucking best
Yeah, when I watched the first two Evil Dead movies for the first time I didn’t like them that much, but as time went on and multiple rewatches later I started finding things with these movies that I started to appreciate and enjoy. Ash is one of the most iconic horror movie heroes ever put to film and it’s cool to see his journey throughout these 3 movies. Enjoy your content as always Cody, keep up the great work.
Thank u sweet baby Jebus. The woods & Touque (yes it’s a touque not a beanie trust me I’m Canadian) are back!!!
Tbh I really liked Cheryl in this one especially the classic scene when she gets possessed
The card scene is my favourite too
My favourite movie of all time
Yes! I had been waiting for this review for a long time Cody! I think ever since I first subscribed to your channel a couple of years back! I can't wait to see you review 2 and 3 as well!
I Love these movies..! ☺️
A very, very good review. I've always been a fan of the series. I think of all three films as a single concept, filmed three different times and ways, transitioning from horror (Evil Dead), to horror-comedy (2) and finally as comedy (Army of Darkness). Thanks for your work.
This movie was banned in the UK in the 80s and placed on the “video nasty” list. I like it for that fact alone. Part 2, my favorite, remade it and improved upon it. The one I revisit the least but good shit given how cheap it was.
The movie officially turns 40 today!
I still cannot believe this was Sam Raimi's feature debut into the Hollywood landscape pre-Spider-Man
Bruce Campbell's first on-screen appearance too
Very low-budget but the movie still delivers scares and some of the most gruesome, memorable makeup effects in horror
The fast zoom-in camerawork is used brilliantly
That infamous tree rape scene will always haunt viewers
Glad Raimi got better with the sequels even spawning a musical, a remake, a video game coming out in 2022, and even the tv series which came out in 2015
One of its financiers was allegedly horrified by its tone during that Michigan premiere; several British courts found it obscene, leading to a prolonged legal battle over censorship in the UK; and the film even only received major distribution at all because Stephen King wrote a glowing review in 1982 after seeing it at Cannes
Raimi and the crew actually did stay in the cabin for real while filming despite the reputation it had for already being haunted
Much like a real horror movie after they wrapped up the cabin was struck by lightning and burnt to the ground
Still love this movie a lot with its mixture of gore and humor
Holy fuck how did I know Cody would say the comics introduced him to Ash😂
Great review Cody! A little off topic, but if you like Sam Raimi then you should definitely check out A Simple Plan. It's a thriller, not a horror movie, with Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thorton. Definitely an underrated gem.
Hopefully one day Cody reviews...
Death Proof and Grindhouse's Planet Terror.
I still have yet to see this movie, but I've made it a point to. I like to think that Sam Raimi inspired me to take film making classes to better myself, because he showed in Evil Dead what you can do with a low budget and practical effects, as long as you have a good story.
Saw it 4 the 1st time on Showtime this past Monday. I liked it.
Could you please do a review on the ash vs evil dead series one of my favorite shows of all time
Somehow I missed the Evil Dead before going to see the remake in theaters. Hubby and I came home to watch the remake right after watching the remake figuring if the remake was so damn good, the original would be epic. I laughed all the way through it. I didn't hate it in the terms of thinking it was a bad movie, but no where in it was I scared or disturbed. I 100 percent see why he chose to remake it himself and try again and what he did to it was amazing.
Evil Dead is my jam! Thanks for the review.
Hell yeah dude! The Evil Dead 1981 is my favorite horror movie of all time!
I think all 4 Evil Dead movies are great, but Evil Dead 2 is my favorite. It's giving Psycho and Scream a run for their money. This is the most consistent franchise to me.
The evil dead has a great filmmakers commentary with Sam and Bruce. They talk at length about the limitations and solutions they came up with for filming the movie. Very entertaining listen.
Cody what is the song to your intro pretty bad ass
I was only 2 when this came out lol
Damn dawg you and Ramboraph4life did your reviews for evil dead at the same damn time.
Great review. I just like the first three Evil Dead's. The two trade paperbacks of Freddy vs Jason vs Ash are entertaining and good follow-ups to Freddy vs Jason.
Groovy
Thanks for the great review cody!
Okay, I'm a pretty big fan of the first two Evil Dead movies and the TV show. Alas I'm still fuzzy on whether or not any there was any explanation why Ash returned to the cabin in pt 2 with no memory of having been there. I know Sam Raimi just wanted to do a remake of his own movie, but has there ever been an in-universe explanation for why Ash took a second vacation out to the cabin?
He actually never left. It all takes place right after part 1. The proof for that is the scene at the beginning, which is the end scene of part one (the evil comes through the house, doors explode and ash is taken). The confusing part is the summary of part one before that opening. They didn't use original footage but shoot it all new, according to a law issue. Ash's girlfriend Linda is in it, but she is played by another actress. And they completely skipped the other three friends of ash, scotty, cheryl (sister) and shelly. That's why it's often called a remake and not a sequel. A lot of people got that mistaken.
@@film4life670 Hmmm. Makes sense as much as it can make sense. I had wished they had an episode of Ash V Evil Dead where they explained why the events happened twice, more or less. Miss that show.
Cody, I love the original Evil Dead better than the remake. Yes it's alittle dated . But, it's scary as HELL!!! :)
Kinda odd the first time I watched this ten years ago I didn’t think it was bad. Probably impressive for its time but just was too dated. Must of been like 20-21. Saw remake and then this after some time and idk! Ten years later I strangely enjoyed it a ton. Of course it was even more dated but I really appreciated camera work, sound, and jus the OG cabin in the woods. It certainly holds its own 40 years later !!!
I haven't rewatched these movies in like ten years since I was a kid, I did love them back then but I've been hesitate because I might find them corny but I do like the first two Spider-Man movies, so I guess I'll have to rewatch them, I remember Army of Darkness being my favorite and that was such a weird, trippy movie
Have you seen this Canadian Series called Slasher? There are three seasons, with a different killer each season. You should check it out, I think it's up your alley. You can find it on Netflix
I feel like evil dead original was made just to show that Sam reimi could get a budget , I feel like evil dead was like a short to she he could make a horror movie , that's why evil dead 2 They act like the first movie never happened , evil dead 2 was the movie sam wanted to make originally
My favorite character is the gal that gets infected and sits Indian style when he is dealing with his buddy!! And is just super creepy lol and the gal in the cellar who can't get out but is always putting her 2 cents in!!
I agree with most of what you said... To me, (forgetting lower budget) the original is so much better than the other 2 sequels because this is HORROR at it's best, but the other 2 are just campy movies. My best comparison, it is like comparing First Blood, to all the Rambo sequels; different kinds of movies...
I also want to sought of disagree with you about Ash in this movie.. I do love your perfect description that he didn't become "Ash" until part 2. But, I very much thought his character stood out in this movie. He was clearly a very nice, caring guy, who you rooted for... That's what really added to the horror of him being by himself for the 2nd half of the movie...
Suggestion... I saw this movie alone, in my parents basement, at night, as a kid.. It was by far, the scariest movie experience I have ever had... I saw it a few years ago with a bunch of young people during the day. They were all laughing about the low budget effects of the movie. This movie is more effective by yourself in the dark of night...
Are you ever going to review Ash Vs Evil Dead?
I like the second one best, the mixture of slight comedy and horror is perfect. After that it got rediculous. Its like the Dream Warriors of the evil dead franchise
I find that I enjoy The Evil Dead a lot more when I watch it on its own. The cheapness and a mature style is a lot less distracting for me when not compared to the rest of the franchise.
I agree 100% with what you said. Great video.
Budget has little to do with how good a film can be, Low budget films can be amazing (Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw, Dead Alive etc) and high budget films can be amazing (The Exorcist, The Shining, Aliens etc) and the reverse can easily be true as well with shitty high and low budget films. Also some of the best gore and other effects are in low budget films, Evil Dead being a prime example. Now days wirth much of cgi effects look like crappy video games! Especially gore effects, other effects they are getting pretty awesome with, but the practical effects are still king. Like no one has ever matched American Werewolf in London Transformation effects, as one example
My mom let me watch this when i was 5 in 1989.. pretty sure it was the first horror movie i seen .. or at lest remember seeing
Hi Cody, did ash v evil dead, improve your thoughts on evil dead or worsen?
Only watched season 1 but i really dug it
Hey Cody have you checked out Bruce Campbell's autobiography If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor? If not you might be interested to know that in the book Bruce goes into detail on how they shot the Evil Dead movies (especially the first 2) and how some of the shots/effects were pulled off.
I cant wait for you to review jexi this upcoming friday cody
Cody, I am interested in knowing your opinion on the Evil Dead 2013 remake. I really think that this is another very underated remake. Hope to see a review soon.
I already have a review for that one
Thanks, I'll look for it and check it out.
Evil dead 2 was awesome , Lil mini ashes beating the shit out of himself ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Good review man. These movies have way to much cheese for me especially evil dead 2 but the remake is one of my favorites and possibly the best horror remake.
Ok as a huge fan of the Evil Dead films, I listened to you talk for about 3 min and as soon as you said you were not a big fan of the films originally (and coming into them later since you were knee high to a grasshopper I guess?) and still had issues with them I tuned you out. For me it's like saying to a christian there is no God lol.
