I watched it as a kid so I prefer army of darkness. Now I can obviously watch evil dead because I’m older but I just have an attachment army of darkness because of all the jokes
Yeah, Army of Darkness is also my favorite in the original trilogy. Ash is at his best in this one. The comedy to me fits with the tone of the movie. The 3rd act with the big battle is a lot of fun to watch. All in all, a really good movie. I heard that they are making a new Evil Dead movie, but I’m hoping it’s a sequel to the remake, I want to see Mia’s story continue.
“Hail to the king, baby”. I love this movie and somehow didn’t mind the silly toned-down direction it went in. Probably because I was entertained as hell by it. Still prefer the bleak ending over the S-Mart one though.
The original Ending to Army of Darkness should be up on youtube. It was planned for Ash to sleep to long and be in the future. So we almost did get a different time period.
Definitely right up there with Evil Dead 2 in my opinion. As you say, razor-thin difference. I love the ending when he jumps on that cart with the shotgun and rides it and shoots that deadite in the market. Badass ending scene.
I love all the films in this franchise, AoD is my second favorite and I completely agree with you Cody and many things positive and negative about this movie. The gore not being there just doesn’t feel right. But still the jokes and fight scenes are a lot of fun!
I was like you Cody. I grew up watching this one, not knowing it was a sequel, and had no knowledge of the previous 2 films for a long time. This movie introduced me to Bruce Campbell, and probably the reason why I like him so much today.
bought EVIL DEAD,AND EVLDEAD 2 yesterday, and have an ARMY of DARKNESS Ash figure, thanks for this, and go finish the series,i think you'll like where they would have taken it,had it not been cancelled.
This is the first one I saw in the trilogy that I didn't know was one. I have always loved this one and the behind scenes making with Greg Nicotero is a must watch of how much of a nightmare it was to make this movie.
My best friend and I rented all 3 movies on Halloween our Senior year of high school, and we had a blast as the movies got weirder, and more amusing. Army of Darkness was my all time favorite movie for many many years, as it was my go to movie, that would put me in a good mood when I was having bad days. I love all three films, but this one is the best. I also prefer the S-Mart ending
Sam made this movie with a PG13 rating in mind but the censor board gave them the R rating because of the reputation the first two movie had.. which is unfair...but that's what Hollywood is like for smaller cult movies like these.
Hilarious opening Cody your worst nightmare is being trapped in the movie Freddys Dead lol. I enjoyed Army Of Darkness it gave the franchise a new energy set in medieval times & loved the skeleton army battles. Yeah it could've been gorier but overall a unique entertaining chapter in the Evil Dead franchise. As for endings I prefer the S-mart ending, I just felt the apocalyptic ending depressing & sequel bait to a film ee never got.
Absolutely my favorite of the franchise. I love the setting, humor, and story. It is just a damn fun film for me. There are so many great quotes too. While the first is a close second this one is my favorite. I just watched this franchise for the first time this year back in January and I've already watched this one like 5 times. And I honestly kick myself that I didnt watch these films a long long long time ago!!
I love this one and agree with you best in the series!!! But, again I gotta ask why the change from the ending of Evil Dead 2 where when he gets there he is hailed as a hero but when Army of Darkness starts he is in chains. Maybe I am just reading to much into it. Also, did anyone else notice how Duke Nukem 3D uses almost all the one liners from Army of Darkness? No, Duke Nukem 3D is not a video it was a very popular computer game (gasp) back in the late 90s.
I saw this one in theaters as a kid , I only knew Evil Dead 2 from Fangoria magazine and saw it later. I had no idea they were linked because of the titles lol.
Another great intro, and the review wasn’t bad either! Re-watching this again recently, I enjoyed it more than I had before (though I’ve always liked it), even though it’s much more like an old Ray Harryhausen film than it is like the first movie. If a person watched the original, skipped the second & went straight to this one, they might be a little puzzled; the change in tone is much larger between Evil Dead II and this one than it is between the first and second. I put off watching this movie for some time; having liked the first two movies so much (especially the first), I was a little leery about the more overt action-comedy tone of this one, but when I finally got around to seeing it I liked it very much. Sam Raimi wanted to call this Evil Dead III, but the studio rejected the title because not enough people had seen the original movies. He then proposed Medieval Dead, but that was turned down as well. The movie’s release was delayed due to some studio-imposed changes: it was made about 15 minutes shorter and the ending was changed. Have you seen the original cut, and if you have, what did you think of it? (Your desire for a sequel in another time period was obviously shared by Raimi & Campbell, given the original ending.) On a final note, Embeth Davidtz (Sheila, the love interest) had quite a year: ten months after this movie came out, she appeared in Schindler’s List as the maid who’s abused by Ralph Fiennes. Certainly two very different movies and roles.
Unfortunately with this movie being the first to be distributed by a major Hollywood studio and a decent sized the budget the gore seen in the first two films was drastically toned down. Although, maybe it was intentional on Raimi's part. I feel like he could have pushed the envelope a little more if he wanted to as the movie is pretty tame as is.
Army of Darkness was the first Evil Dead film I saw. It still holds up. Cody covered everything that’s great, I especially love how the film doubles as a great comedy and an action flick. Whenever someone tries to say slapstick is not funny, this film is an example I use to refute that claim. By the way, for anyone that is huge fan of Bruce Campbell, you should check out the video game “Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle.” It’s got some of the classic Pitfall elements, some new stuff, and a wacky story, but the best part is Bruce Campbell is the voice of Pitfall Harry, and like this film, he throws one-liners throughout the game. He even references this film in the game with the line “Come on, who wants some?” But anyway, Army of Darkness is a classic film and to me will always be one of Bruce Campbell’s finest work. Ash: Hail to the king, baby.
It's been bugging me for a while now trying to remember where I've heard "carnage candy" before. I finally just remembered and popped in Scream 2 just to be sure. Lol every time you say it I would wonder.
31 on 31 confirmed films 8 Child’s Play films 8 Texas Chainsaw Massacre films 5 Psycho films 4 Evil Dead films =25/31 What the hell could be those 6 other movies? Hmmmm
Never laughed so hard in this movie from that one part. And you know what part I am talking about. You are running to things Jack and shit and Jack left town..
If there had to be that one person who's opinions are exactly the same, it's you Cody. I feel exactly the same about this franchise as you do. Army of Darkness is the only one that I have nostalgia for too, the others weren't watched or even knew about until I had grown up.
Personal Theory: What if Evil Dead is actually the story of Demons (Deadites) that captures the soul of Ashley Williams at the end of Evil Dead 2 and what we're witnessing in Army Of Darkness is Ash's decent into Hell..?
Just went back to this one (Can't wait for Rise!) This is a fricking blast. I haven't felt this jazzed by something and ready to engulf everything about it since I first watched Firefly. Best of the series for me, immediately started Ash vs. Evil Dead after this. Groovy!
great review, i have alot of nostalgia for this part too, since i watched it first out of all "evil dead"-movies and also countless times... and i had a similar experience (to the one you talked about with this movie) with the movie "paperhouse" directed by bernard rose.
Bruce Campbell is great in AoD, but I've never liked this film. The very first time I saw it was just a complete turn off. The lack of horror, gore and interesting supporting characters are what did it for me. The transition from Evil Dead 2 to Army of Darkness is brutal when part 2 is your favorite. Great review Cody!
Trancers 4 and 5 and part of Waxwork 2 felt like they drew inspirado from AoD. Waxwork 2 came out the same year as AoD. Btw, Bruce refers to us fans as "knuckleheads" and also as "The Army of Dorkness." 🤣 12:42 It always bugged me that he said "21st century" when he's from the late 20th century. The movie came out in 1992, plus it's canon that Ash's present (at this point) is 1982. 14:02 Duke Henry's cool.
This movie is so fun. I got to see it on the big screen last night and do a Q&A with Bruce Campbell afterwards. Seeing it in a full theater is a blast bc everyone knows all the one liners and cheers and laughs. One of the things he talked about was now the movie was originally nc-17. Bc of the talking skeletons. Apparently they were offensive in 1991. He also said there’s more evil dead coming!
Hi Cody, I just watched the first 3 Evil Dead movies for my first time in the last 4 nights & I just finished watching Army of Darkness at 4:05 a.m. of 8/10/23 & I loved it! I'm not someone who loves Extreme gore, so tho I liked the original Evil Dead & Evil Dead 2 was okay, I really Enjoyed the comedy mixed w/horror in Army of Darkness, so I like & enjoyed this movie the most of the first 3.😊♥️
Did u know that there is a collectors edition by shout factory that comes with the theatrical release the directors cut and the international cut/televised cut (some like the directors cut and the international cut have the alternative ending where ash slept to long and woke up in a apocalyptic time period) I actually while I love the theatrical cut with its epic one liners and ending as a movie critic I think I like the directors cut a tad more for fleshing out a couple more things like more time in the farm house an actual shela love scene that while it doesn’t add much it at least adds something with the satiation turned down like the ending of evil dead 2 to not come of as a fantasy movie and more of a dirtier look the only downside for me is that they changed a lot of the one liners with evil ash and had the alternative ending which was fitting with the character of ash but I love the “hail to the king, baby” ending. U should give it a watch if u haven’t already (I think it actually adds a bit more gore to don’t quote me on that tho)
I was just going to mention the other cuts, but you beat me to it. I seem to remember a tad more, but yeah, compared to the first two, even the other cuts was toned way down. And side note, the commentary track with Sam and Bruce, one of the few commentaries I'll recommend. You could just tell by the way they talk to each other, how long they've been friends.
Mistress Jen yea the first one was v much felt just two friends waiting to make a movie and they just did it. My favorite one in the series is Evil Dead 2 but I have a huge respect for the first movie and love them all (minus the whole tree rape thing) I loved ash vs evil dead but have v mixed opinions on the ending again it was fitting for ash but just knowing that wasn’t the planned ending still stings with me that even the epic groovy couldn’t save
This movie is beloved to me but I do also think it's strange that there is a lack if gore evry other installment has it to spare. But that's ok Army of Darkness is good enough without it
Can’t believe I waited 32 years to watch this movie. That alone, probably not worth a comment. However, I also missed out for 3 years on one of Cody’s best intros. The Movie is an instant favorite. Cody might be the best at what he does. He’s certainly the one I look to first.
Loved the cold open! And love this movie. Great review, thanks. Hail to the King, baby! I do kinda wish they'd used the original title - Evil Dead 3: Medieval Dead :)
Being that it's the most scariest time of the year (TM to me). Is there anyway you, CP, Drumdums or the community can review, rate, rank shows like the Adams Family, the Munsters, Tales from the crypt or the like?
As much as I would have preferred the entire Evil Dead series staying straight horror going into 2 and Army of Darkness. I absolutely love Army of Darkness and I can't imagine it any other way. Even though I wish 2 was straight horror like the first.
Even tho I like this film a lot, it probably my least favorite out of the Evil Dead Series. Now don’t get me wrong, Army Of Darkness is a great film and I didn’t mind the tone shift, but I like the horror tone from the first two movies and the remake better. If I had to rank the Evil Dead series, it would be 1. The Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead 2013 3. Evil Dead 2 4. Army Of Darkness
No wonder I was kinda confused when I first seen it I didn't know it was a sequel to a movie. I've never seen the evil dead or the second one when I watched that one.
I just recently saw Army of Darkness. I thought it was ok; a little too silly for my taste. I don’t mind comedy within horror but I don’t like the comedy to outdo the horror. I had always heard this very thing about AOD and that was why I’d never watched it all these years 🤷🏾♀️. It’s also why I prefer the original Evil Dead over Pt 2. (I never understood why so many fans like Pt. 2 the best). Evil Dead 2 was good but the comedy was just too much and I found it a little ridiculous of Ash to be right back in the same situation with the same gf (different actress) doing the exact same shit. I think it was Victor Miller (writer of FD13) who said you have to make your characters stupid but not to the point where they’re not believable to your audience. I guess it comes down to your preferences within the genre. I prefer straight up horror; scary horror movies. However, if there’s comedy, I just don’t want it overshadowing the horror; above all else, I want to be scared and horrified when I’m watching horror movies! 🤷🏾♀️🙂 Now that I’ve seen the remake, my preferences are: Evil Dead; Evil Dead (remake); Evil Dead 2; AOD
I still prefer Evil Dead 2, but Army of Darkness is great, too.
Same here. Still love this film though but in my opinion it doesn't feel like evil dead at times.
I watched it as a kid so I prefer army of darkness. Now I can obviously watch evil dead because I’m older but I just have an attachment army of darkness because of all the jokes
Cody: All right you primitive screwheads listen up. See this? This......
IS MY OPINION!!!"
Yeah, Army of Darkness is also my favorite in the original trilogy. Ash is at his best in this one. The comedy to me fits with the tone of the movie. "You ain't leading but two things buddy Jack and shit, jack left town" I love this movie man.
That is easily my favorite line in the film. Close second is… “Good, bad, I’m the guy with the gun.”
Army of Darkness was the movie that got me to like the Evil Dead series
“You know, your shoelace is untied...”
Me: wwwhat? But they don’t have shoelaces back then?
Army of Darkness is truly a great film. If only Evil Dead 4 happened
Kinda did, with the "remake"
Zak Playk kinda
Ash vs Evil Dead happened so we dont need a 4th evil dead
Justin Williams true, but another evil dead movie would be cool
Justin Williams I was so pissed that it got cancelled 😩
Fun film, it always makes me smile when it comes out, was glad to see you finally review these Cody. Thanks for the laughter and the review.
This intro had me Rollin'! LMAO
"Give me some sugar, baby!"

I liked this better than Evil Dead 2. Loved you intro Cody. Funny Stuff! haha!! :)

This is the first one I saw in the trilogy that I didn't know was one. I have always loved this one and the behind scenes making with Greg Nicotero is a must watch of how much of a nightmare it was to make this movie.

Cody totally gave me a heart attack with the opening on this one, lol I thought Robert Englund had died recently and I didn’t hear about it! 😅
A.N. Franklin same here. I bout freaked out.
Honestly, the intro had me dying lol

Army of Darkness is my favorite one of the original trilogy, but that's probably because I saw the movies backwards. Also, which ending do you prefer?
I think the directors cut ending fits the movie better but the theatrical ending fits the franchise more...if that makes sense
Another great intro, and the review wasn’t bad either!

awesome opening!
"See how that works?"
We need one more movie. How's about the alternate end of this movie. That's where we need to pickup the story line.

the change in tone works to its advantage
though the film could have benefited from improving the love intrest scenes

Even tho I like this film a lot, it probably my least favorite out of the Evil Dead Series. Now don’t get me wrong, Army Of Darkness is a great film and I didn’t mind the tone shift, but I like the horror tone from the first two movies and the remake better. If I had to rank the Evil Dead series, it would be
1. The Evil Dead
2. Evil Dead 2013
3. Evil Dead 2
4. Army Of Darkness
Does the book have a spell to stop Disney from making live-action movies, Cody? Good luck with Freddy. 😆
No wonder I was kinda confused when I first seen it
I didn't know it was a sequel to a movie. I've never seen the evil dead or the second one when I watched that one.
I love this movie
the first half is descent as hell, second half is good
Favorite of the original trilogy, but I think the remake and TV show are better, if only slightly.
Army of Darkness is the Shit. I love the corny cheeseballness of the movie. Very slapstick and I love it.
Love this movie
Remake? It’s a straight sequel to evil dead 2.
I love all three movies
This movie is hilarious one of my favorites
Welp I bought the steelbook version of it
Enjoy this movie, love a sequel:)
"Where's the gore?" Man gets thrown down pit.... blood explodes from said pit.
That's probably the only gory moment in this film tbh. And it's even just played for laughs.
What he said^^^
@@CodyLeachYT Cool it guys.. I know the gore isn't there. I guess they blew blood budget on the pit. 🤣🤣🤣
Just got done watching it. Hated it. Also hated Evil Dead 2.
Evil Dead 1981 and Evil Dead 2013>>>>
