    Thanks Sean, another super informative video. There's a lot to take in there, made me realise I need to go over the TK7 Video Guides again. More practice with TK7 required - despite my best intentions to use Photoshop more, I'm still using Lightroom for the majority of my editing. Once winter sets in I'm going to purchase your PS Essentials for Outdoor Photographers package and ditch Netflix for at least 3 nights a week.
    A huge Thank You for making accessible what once seemed impenetrable.

      Certainly nothing wrong with doing all/most work in LR if that gets you where you want. As you learn more about PS and the things the panel can do you'll start to know which things you prefer to do in LR and which things you can accomplish better in PS. As for ditching Nextflix to watch me instead...you are much stronger than I am. ;-)

    One thing I enjoy using (in Photoshop) is the “auto” button on the levels adjustment because it gives a nice bit of contrast to the image. Darkening blacks and brightening whites just until they’re about to clip. On the zone system this could be thought of as taking care of zones 0 and 10. But what should I do with the other zones (1-9)? Is there a way that I can get a more optimal contrast level throughout those zones with luminosity masks?

    I'm amazed you were able to get such a clean selection of those trees from the background. Some of those background areas appear to have pretty similar tones. I struggle with the refine edge tool in these situations. Maybe you used some sort of color mask?

    Another class video you make learning so much easier, just a question, when bringing the image into CC do you open it as a smart object or just choose what photoshop opens it in

    • @SeanBagshaw
      @SeanBagshaw  4 роки тому

      It depends. If I think I will benefit from being able to make further raw adjustments in PS then I definitely open as a smart object. There are quite a few techniques I use that involve going back to the raw adjustments. On the other hand, smart objects don't support healing/cloning/content aware filling so if I know I need to do a lot of that type work in PS then I'll just get the raw adjustments the best I can in LR and then open as a regular image file.

    Sean - I noticed you didn't use any Blake Rudis style color grading - no gradient maps or gradients, but kept to your usual analysis and techniques (which I also use thanks to your videos). Blake has released a new updated panel for his color work. If you have tried his panel, what do you think about its usefulness?

    • @SeanBagshaw
      @SeanBagshaw  4 роки тому +3

      I have not tried Blake's panel and I still consider myself a noob when it comes to using gradients and gradient maps for color grading in the way Blake does. Most of my color work tends to be making very slight shifts to the colors that are already in the image as compared to introducing entirely new ranges of color, so the PS color adjustments and masking techniques usually get me where I'm going. I do experiment with gradients and gradient maps if my creative juices are calling for it. But at this point, I don't consider myself knowledgeable or proficient enough to teach it. Better to leave that to Blake for now. :-D

    Hi Sean, I purchased years ago your Developing for Extended Dynamic Range 2nd Ed. video. Do you have any other purchase suggestions to learn the V7 panel while improving my mask evaluation, creation and refining skills? (If that includes on shooting-location choice-making, even better)

    • @SeanBagshaw
      @SeanBagshaw  4 роки тому

      Hi Lorenzo. The TK7 Video Guide shows how the panel functions and features all work and I give some workflow instruction but it isn't really meant to be a lesson in image developing. My Favorite Photoshop Techniques series also goes into some of those concepts but in the context of how to accomplish the specific techniques. Finally, the Complete Workflow series gives a range of examples of my flow and thought process while developing images. So, I don't have a single course that hits on precisely all the topics you mention...but it's all in there in various places throughout my courses.

    A lot of times i'll watch tutorials of people doing a ton of work on a photo using all sorts of masks and advanced techniques, only to see it at the end and think, hmm.. i could have just done that while playing with some levels or curves and manually playing with the basic in program functions and had it come out looking almost exactly the same in a couple of minutes. I think with so many functions, plugins etc.. we overthink stuff sometimes and just want to play with tools because they are there, even though the same effect can be achieved quicker and easier lol.

    • @SeanBagshaw
      @SeanBagshaw  4 роки тому

      I completely agree with that. Sometimes, after I have spent a lot of time working on an image and then evaluate how I did it, I think that same thing. Most often I start with the simplest way I can think of first and if that works then great. If not, then I move on to more complex methods as needed until I can finally get what I'm looking for...but that entire process would be confusing and tedious to watch. I think one thing to remember about video tutorials (at least mine anyway) is that they provide instruction on a concept. They are designed to show a particular method as clearly and concisely as possible to make it understandable...but not necessarily compare it to all the other ways a similar adjustment might be accomplished or advocate that it is the best or only way to do it. Once someone understands the process then it is up to them to decide when or if to use it or not. My goal is always to provide information and ideas and show how I might do something...but make no claims that anything I teach is the only option or how it should be done.

      HI Sean, thank you for replying I have had TK panels since 2017 and I have your videos associated with the panels I bought then I have now got the TK 7 panels and videos and they are nearly apart from the updated stuff identical a second payment of $29. 00 angered me. I have never been able to follow the videos because they move to fast in fact I have never ever used a panel for that reason. I am determined to learn this and it was yourself that got me interested in the first place all those years ago and seeing the video with the sunflowers recently made me even more determined than ever. Infinity color masking I think. The speed problem is the worst because you cannot slow the playback speed on the Quicktime player good enough as you can with You-Tube. I watched some of your You-Tube videos and like them but to practice them and using your own words you have to practice and practice the panels because they are complicated. Now to do that images must come with the videos if you do not want to use your own good ones then use the ones you do not rate as keepers or when you are out on a shoot take specific ones for the videos you do. Or there is always upsplash and there like. It is so easy to do a video with an accompanying image it would help us so much. I have recently come across The joy of editing with Dave Kelly and it is fantastic. You are the main man for Tony Kuyper imagine if your You-Tube chanel gave an image as well what a resource that would be for us plus I think your subscriptions would benefit as well. Thanks for listening Barry
