Impasto medium is also used to give more structure to paint for thicker applications and where you want texture because it holds brush and knife strokes, it’s essentially like a 3D paint because it’s really heavy bodied. You can get the look of oil painting when you mix it with acrylics and you can apply it as is to a surface then paint over it when it’s dry so it’s quite versatile and lots of fun! It also has a few other names depending on brand, I have a tub of texture paste, heavy modelling paste and clear texture gel and they all do the same thing for the most part and you’re right about tutorials to make your own Ian, I’ve tried it and it works a treat and saves you loads of money!
There are same pigments that are so fussy to get spread onto the canvass I have to use the medium, retarder to get the paint to spread out. I hope I'm using the right product. Thanks for this info. I'm learning....and progressing I think. I hope.
Hi Ian. What we call structure paint in Australia is known in America as hard body. They have hard body, soft body and flow paints. 3 different consistencies.
Ive never done canvas yet. It was always poster board carboard and thin Naugahyde and thin ply. Like tryin to pilot the space shuttle with a taxicab driver.
Well done on your explanation! Especially on the mediums because they got so many kinds sometimes we got lost a little to choose the one we really need for what our finishing product should really look like 👍 thank you

Ian ... Theresa from HK here.. asking you a question.. was the little painting you did of the moon and Earth a tutorial? Please tell me what number it is? Thanks.
Wow! As a beginner, I have not yet found a more comprehensive explanation of acrylic painting. I found it extremely useful, and am going to take your advice about not trying to cram everything in straight away. There is a question I’d like to ask though. I have watched you use soft flow paint with retarder to prime your canvases. Is it possible to use retarder with gesso too, for the same kind of reason, and have you tried it? Thanks Ian, keep up the stunning work. From Gail in South Wales, UK 🏴
could you do a video on what to do if say you are painting away but your a mother or grandmother with babe and you have to stop.... how would you do this without destroying the entire painting because of it drying?

gesso is flat, i havent used it with gesso, you will have to test it out but i like to use the flow white to get the wet on wet look for my blending
Ok, I’ll give that a go, thank you
What do you use for a palette? It looks nice and big?
now a days i use 6mm thick glass painted white on the under side with 4 sponge pads under each corner
Podrías traducir esta clase al español ?
Gracias !!!
Lo necesito mucho.
Sobre todo por ti.

Hi Ian
Can I use watercolour paper with acrylic paints?
you can paint acrylic on water color paper yes
If I dont have a fan brush, what else could I use???
you need to play around with your brushes and see just how they can work for you, every one is different and will use a brush differently, practice
@@ianapolis thank you,yes have to find that right brush.
