  • In this episode of Dracula, we explore the character of Dracula himself. We look at how Bram Stoker's vampire mythology offers a fusion of pagan and Christian forces. We then look at the connection between vampires and nobility. I explain and reject the idea that Dracula is a novel about the fears of migration. We also look at Dracula as an androgynous monster, and see how this androgynous trope extends across vampire literature to the present day.

Love everything you say about Dracula. It’s a wonderful book.

After these series about Dracula 🧛‍♂️ I feel like reading the book again might be a good idea, I read it 15 years ago ( still a teen) and I feel I didn’t fully appreciated all the nuances and ideas behind it

I like the suckling at the breast reference as a reversal of the feminine role. I wonder if the blood in the 'brides' is bad blood. He never goes back to them to feed, but he returns to Lucy and Mina repeatedly. And did he ever feed on Jonathan? I don't think so. They brides may have but not him. So he needs "girlie" (LOL) blood in him to fulfill his part. I have Leslie Klinger's annotated Dracula but I've only looked at the pictures and some of the annotations. Have to dust it off again. Thanks for the vid.

Glad you liked the video. An illustrated version sounds interesting, the version I've got is a pretty naff paperback with a pretty naff cover. It matches the cover for the terrible (but sort of great) sequel by Dacre Stoker and Ian (Holmes, maybe?). Maybe I'll review that some time. It would be fun!

The way you pronounce Christian, I have heard someone in a old movie, think it was a sailing ship movie with English sailors, pronounce it that way “that’s not very Christian of you” drives me nuts trying to remember what movie it was😀 Every time I hear your accent say that word I think of this😀😀(thought it was the Clark Gable version of Mutiny on the Bounty, watched recently just to see if it was, but it wasn’t)
Great study on Dracula by the way!!

🦉I'm sure you know that Clive Barker in addition to being a writer and director is an amazing painter.
Since you love his work on the page do you also like his work on the canvas? My favorite painting of his depicts a strange creature in a glass jar with a price tag attached displaying a question mark.
It's always great hearing from you, I think you raise the quality bar of UA-cam. 🦚

I don't know his paintings in detail, but of the ones I've seen I really like them. His illustrations for the original books of blood are fantastic.
