Do you want to join in the feather frenzy?
Or hold steady with a classic dress that will not go out of style?

PROS & CONS OF ADDING FEATHERS:
    PROS:
    * Changes the look of the older dress, making it feel new.
    * Creates texture and depth.
    * Ostrich boas on the hem of a Standard ballgown are considered a classic feminine look.
    * Ostrich or marabou boas on the hem of a short Latin or skate skirt is a sexy, sassy look.
    * Re-fluff ostrich and marabou boas with steam and a vigorous shake.
    CONS:
    * Washing the entire dress is not advisable. Spot cleaning sweaty dress parts is the only option.
    * Feathers add extra bulk to a dress making it more cumbersome when traveling to events.
    * Vegetarians, vegans and those concerned about animal welfare should probably avoid adding this item to your dress.
    * Ostrich boas shed and leave little feather pieces behind.
    * Feathers require more time and money when altering or making a dress.
    * Color dye on feathers often fades when damp. Be careful if feathers get wet and fall on the floor, or settle on your dress.
    * Feathers go in and out of fashion in the Dancesport, Country and skate worlds. If you add feathers to a dress (especially speciality feathers like peacock, coque or goose), that dress may look dated in a year.

Working on costumes for Seussical the Musical (six feathered dresses). Read your tips too late, I'm afraid. I've been sneezing feathers for three days AND cleaning a crazy purple dye/film from every surface in my sewing room. Live and learn.

Glad you liked the video. Sorry about inhaling feathers and the color issue. :( It's a nightmare, I know!
Your costumes sound fabulous! Will you friend me on Facebook and post pics so the sewing school members and dancers/skaters can see them? facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008195320605

Hello :) thank you for the very informative video. I have a question: do you know how to get your very own feather boa? Are the feather strips attached one to another or onto something else? Just trying to sew my very first boa to train as a burlesque dancer and i don't wanna spend too much money on it, i can't 😭 thank you so much in advance!

I don't understand what you mean by "get your very own feather boa". You mean you want to make a feather boa? My personal vote is when you need a feather boa, it is most wise to spend money buying one than to spend hours and a lot of frustration trying to make it.
For a super economy boa, Halloween costume shops usually carry something for only a few dollars. It won't last long, but it will save you a lot of time.

This video was 6 years ago are feathers out of style now? Or did they go out and then back in?

Feathers on competition ballroom dance dresses come and go in popularity. As a general rule, they cycle in and out of fashion for Standard ballgowns every 2-3 years. On Latin dance dresses, they can pretty much always be an option for applying to the hem of a flared skirt.

Just watched your video on feathers. You may want to suggest your viewers go to "Peta/feathers" to see the horrible abuse these birds endure for our vanity. There are so many alternatives to create a beautiful gown without pain/death to fowl. You may wish to create a video on these alternatives. I know you can because you did that for my very first ballgown in the early 1990s.

Hello Jeannie! I remembered you as soon as I saw your name: :) I made your gown in 1991 maybe?
Are you still in AZ? I hope you have been well.
Yes, I've been saving up photos, weblinks, etc to make a "feather alternative" video.
I'm quite certain I could not watch the PETA video without being appalled :( But it is probably something a lot of people should watch so they know the price that is paid for an item they want. This is true for other hot topics such as super-cheap labor overseas, where beef and chicken for dinner comes from, landfill status, etc.

So glad you remembered me! I didn't think you would so I never mentioned it to you before. Your videos are really enjoyable and even though I don't sew my own costumes I feel I learn something about what would look good on me.
Also, I watched your interview with Jenell and she spoke so highly of you when we talked about it.
Believe it or not... I am still dancing but with Jim Maranto. In fact, I've been with him since about 1997/8 and going strong. Currently, I dance open gold Standard and Smooth and was 5 times a US finalist in Smooth at the nationals. Of course, now I am in Senior and even Senior 2 if a competition has that division...UGH!! (How time flies but you don't look a day older).
I am thinking of making another Standard dress and maybe do the bottom as you did on that initial dress you made for me. I made copies of a couple of the old pictures of that dress and want to attach them to this email but it is not working. If I can't figure out how to do it I shall have to wait for my son-in-law to come over and help me.

@@jeaniebernstein9879 I'm really glad you learn something in each video! People often email me wanting sewing videos (which are in my Sew Like A Pro™ sewing school seamssensational.com/sewing-programs/), but want I chose to focus on are topics that can help people choose or design a dress too - not just make one from scratch!
Jenell and I had a great time filming the interview (others can watch it at ua-cam.com/video/nxE4x629xK0/v-deo.html) ... and catching up in general. It had been many years since I saw her or Jim!
P.S. You cannot attach photos to UA-cam. You can, however, email me photos @ teresa@seamssensational.com
I look forward to seeing your old pictures :)

I hate that I just found out, mainly all fake feathers are not fake feathers

I know the feather issue is tough. :( It's on my list to film a blog about feather alternatives for those of us who want animal-friendly dresses (as much as possible.)
