I’m 71 years old and have only taken up crocheting in the last few years after knitting for a life time. In the last couple of years I’ve had to change my knitting style to a Shetland island/Hazel Tindall ‘flicking’ style which really helped to stop hand pain. When I recently took up crochet, my hand pain came back and I could hear the tendons in my wrists and arms clicking with all the twisting and turning. Your crochet style is very similar to English Flicking style of knitting so it was a fairly quick adjustment for me. Thanks so much for posting this - you’ve really helped this old lady to continue to be productive and stay busy and pain free.
I'm also a flicker love learned from verypink . I'm going to try try this method. I'm not good at crocheting holding the hook like a pencil, I'm a knife holder I think this may be a better method for me too
I was thinking of doing a video of the way I crochet because I don’t do it like most videos that I’ve seen. Yours is the closest to the way I crochet. Like you I learned to knit when I was about six or seven years old and I learned to crochet When I was 12 years old. I am now a senior citizen. A left-handed girl taught me how to crochet. I am right handed. My crocheting technique looks very similar to knitting and has served me well all these years. I think you for beginning with the fact that there is no one way to crochet. The way we hold the needle or the work should be most comfortable for us.
thank you for posting this!! i literally put your videos in slow motion to learn your way of holding your hook months ago, and it literally changed everything for me:,) i also notice i don’t worry about my tension as much cause it’s very consistent!
Right?! I am convinced that if I can get this down I'll have more consistent stitches, but I'm struggling with ”palming" the yarn in my right hand to keep the tension, I have just bought knitting needles because I think that learning to knit will help me wrap my head around this!
Thank you so much for this! I have been knitting and crocheting for 55 years, but I never saw anything like this before. I tried it, and, like magic, my wrist stopped hurting! God bless you, this is a real game changer for me. Lol
Bro, this was actually so helpful, I picked it up right away and it’s actually so much fun. I get so much wrist pain from my usual way and I need a little bit of time to get used to it but … no more wrist pain!! Thank you so much queen🫶🫶🫶🫶
Thank you 🙏 Thank you! 😘 I love to crochet and have been struggling with severe pain. I actually thought i would have to give it up, which is just unspeakable! I found your video and if it were possible, I would give you a massive hug!❤ Thank you for posting this! Please continue to post your useful tips 🙏
The way you crochet is so interesting! I think I'll try it just to give it whirl! It reminds me of "Throwing" in knitting. So you could call it the "Throwing Masse" haha!
I taught I was the only person in the world to knit crochet and also because I'm irish 😂 I'm trilled to bits that I have found your video I was getting so frustrated trying to hold the wool in my left hand so thanks a million so sharing it x x x x ❤❤❤
My mum has just started to learn crochet after years of knitting and has found holding her hook like a knitting needle works for her too 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you for sharing 👏🏼👏🏼
Wow! So glad I found this tutorial. I recently started feeling slight pain in my left hand. This is a brilliant method! I’m also a knitter so this will be an easy transition for me all the while give my left hand a break! Thank you!
I learned to knit long before I learned to crochet and I crocheted this way for a long time. I call it my Knitting crochet style. I later learned to crochet using the knife grip and I find that quicker. When I am learning a new stitch or a complicated crochet pattern I find I switch back to my knitting crochet technique.
I have been knitting since I was young. My grandma tried to teach me crochet first, but I just couldn't get the hang of it, so she gave that up and taught me to knit instead. I have tried learning crochet a few times since, but could never quite do it. Holding the yarn with my left hand just feels so wrong. This! This is type of thing I have been looking for! I am so excited to try this! Thank you so so much!
I would love to be able to crochet like this but I just can't hold the yarn in my right hand BUT a huge thank you cause this video made me more mindful of the hulk-like grip I usually have on my hook
Omg… that’s exactly the way I do it.. I’ve never seen anyone else doing it like me… thank you, I thought I was a weirdo…😊😊😊😊 sharing this to my friends and family to show them that I’m quite normal lol 😜 😂❤
Thank you for this I have been crocheting since 9 now I'm in my thirties. I am also a continental knitter. My hands would go numb with the knife hold and trying to do the pencil grip wasn't really catching on for me plus I needed more speed to get projects done. This helped so much your massie hold❤❤ has saved my hands. God bless you and love to see more.❤❤❤❤
I was taught pretty much this method by a friend's mum though the yarn wasn't wrapped round finger. I am going to start wrapping the yarn round my finger though as it looks like it might help with my tension issues. So thanks to you I can stop calling the way I crochet 'the wrong way' 😊
I love the way you explain things and make videos. It’s always so straight forward and helpful, and you’re still very encouraging at the same time. I feel like that combo is hard to come by
Having seen it from another person, I've been thinking of it in my head and searching it as "crocheting english style" from knitting but I guess Masse method or Masse hold works as well. Curious thing: apparently my grandmother used to hold the hook that way as well. I can't wait to try it, as I am a knitter mostly. So thank you so much for this tutorial!!!
I think the best name is “Crochet Throwing Style” similar to knitters I guess? Guess it’s not common enough so we have to give it a name! Goodluck with the crocheting :)
Oh my goodness HOW DO YOU HOLD YOUR YARN IN YOUR RIGHT HAND??? I would love to see a still of how your yarn is being held. I am going to try this!!! Thank you.😊
I'm so confused, I'm left handed and never knitted before. Only have been crocheting for 4 years... im so intrigued tho-i would love and in depth on how to hold the yarn and hook please.
I just saw you had a video showing how you crochet! Your knitting approach to crochet! 🥰 I don’t know how it’s called, but I’ve seen the way of crocheting before. I think Jayda in Stitches’ mother in law crochets this way 🤔 Regardless, it’s beautiful and you produce gorgeous work! (I was watching your latest video, about Margot, but my internet went down so I haven’t finished it yet). I’m not changing how I crochet (pencil grip, left hand/finger tensio), but it’s really helpful to see other ways t do it. Who knows if I ever need to do color work in crochet and I end up using your method in the right hand for color A and color B in the left hand, as knitters do 🤯
I have arthritis and I use the knife technique but my needle sets firmly to my palm. The needles were too long so I used a bolt cutter and shorted them to 4 inches. I crochet faster with less pain.
how do you hold your yarn tho? cuz i (and most people) hold their yarn in their left hand meanwhile with your way of crocheting it's impossible and you have to hold the yarn in your right. thanks for the tutorial!
I had a major accident that ruined my left hand and fingers. I'm able to do knitting. Today I tried crocheting and the pain is too much in my fingers to hold it the way everyone else does. I know that I would be able to do it the Way You are. I just wish somebody could teach me right from Square One how to crochet using your technique. But I'm determined to try to figure this out. Thanks 😊.
hi, can you make a mor detailed tutorial on how to hold the yarn and start a stitch using this holding method? i find it hard to imitate just through this video only, but I'm so eager to learn since I've experienced wrist pain more often than usual :( thanks!!
Late to the party here but if this was knitting it would be called "English Throw". You're the first young person I've seen who crochets like I do. Clicked on the video because I saw the preview.
I feel like you still need a strong grip over the yarn on the right-hand side because for the life of me the yarn keeps slipping GOD I WANT TO MAKE THIS WORK 😭😭
Oh my god, thank you. I had a problem with index finger strain in crochet that doesnt exist when i knit. Problem solved, i'm off to the races. Edit: people have been naming techniques after themselves forever, "Masse Method" rolls off the tongue. If you'd prefer, you could also call it the "English Method" because it mimics the English "throwing" style of knitting.
what if u called it the ‘bob and weave’ method lmfao or like passback or back & forth i’ve been learning this method and it’s really fucking helpful omg barely any pain and it’s fun 😊 decided i’m gonna call it ‘bob & weave’ because it’s funny, makes me laugh, and I feel like it’s accurate
I used to knit and then when i started crochet like you i crochet as if i were knitting which drives my friend crazy when she watches me but it feels comfy doing it that way

Do you get any neck / trap muscle pain ? Or am i doing something wrong
thank you for posting this!! i literally put your videos in slow motion to learn your way of holding your hook months ago, and it literally changed everything for me:,) i also notice i don’t worry about my tension as much cause it’s very consistent!
I’m happy I could help! and yes! i find guiding the yarn keeps tension consistent which is a major plus
Right?! I am convinced that if I can get this down I'll have more consistent stitches, but I'm struggling with ”palming" the yarn in my right hand to keep the tension, I have just bought knitting needles because I think that learning to knit will help me wrap my head around this!
Yes can you make a video about holding the tension in the right hand AND can you do a slow mo of chaining with this method?
wrapping the yarn around my pinky and over my index worked for me! it took me awhile to figure it out lol
Thank you so much for this! I have been knitting and crocheting for 55 years, but I never saw anything like this before. I tried it, and, like magic, my wrist stopped hurting! God bless you, this is a real game changer for me. Lol
I think I need another video showing how to handle the yarn tension! I've been trying and trying, but I can't seem to keep the yarn on my finger
Same here!!
Bro, this was actually so helpful, I picked it up right away and it’s actually so much fun. I get so much wrist pain from my usual way and I need a little bit of time to get used to it but … no more wrist pain!! Thank you so much queen🫶🫶🫶🫶

Fascinating I love to watch people do their "Own Take" on crafting......efficient and very elegant xx

I crochet exactly the same way as you. Im 63 and my mum taught me 🎉❤
Thank you so much! This method solved my pain, and it's much easier to control the tension!
Thanks Homegirl! Training myself up on your vids. Goal is a full body onsie with hooded cowl!
Thanks for sharing this! I picked it up so quickly, it’s my new way to crochet!!
I love the way you explain things and make videos. It’s always so straight forward and helpful, and you’re still very encouraging at the same time. I feel like that combo is hard to come by
can u make a short video on tiktok on how you hold ur yarn to show how u regulate ur yarn tension (on ur right hand) while doing this please ?
YESSSS i’ve been waiting for this!! thank you so much for posting this, i’m hoping this cures my wrist pain 🥲
Randomly saw ur tiktok and decided to learn after just getting into crocheting. Found this easier than learning the knife grip for my left hand yay!!
Having seen it from another person, I've been thinking of it in my head and searching it as "crocheting english style" from knitting but I guess Masse method or Masse hold works as well. ur new hair is so pretty!! tysm for the tutorial ive been struggling with a lot of pain so ill need to try this 😭
Made sense to me. Thanks for the video! ❤
thank you so much for this🫶🏼

Wow, they are so cute, what's the name of the thread you use?
Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful tutorial 😊ིྀ
i had to slow down your slomo version lol i don't think this is for me but i am very impressed!
Amazing 😻
Will have to try this. I can't get the right tension and so don't crochet and knit instead. Meanwhile, there are crochet patterns I'd like to use.
how do you hold your yarn tho? cuz i (and most people) hold their yarn in their left hand meanwhile with your way of crocheting it's impossible and you have to hold the yarn in your right. thanks for the tutorial!

Would be nice to understand how it all works! Step by step.
tysm for doing this video!!!
Well the knitting equivalent to this is called flicking so I vote for the to be called flicketing
It looks similar to 'flicking' in knitting!
Clever 🎉
hi, can you make a mor detailed tutorial on how to hold the yarn and start a stitch using this holding method? i find it hard to imitate just through this video only, but I'm so eager to learn since I've experienced wrist pain more often than usual :( thanks!!
Does this still work with starting like a beginning chain?
how do you do the back/front loop crochet?
Late to the party here but if this was knitting it would be called "English Throw". You're the first young person I've seen who crochets like I do. Clicked on the video because I saw the preview.
thank you!!!
@@alexandria_masse no problem :-)
I love this. But if you can show how from the beginning it would help. So like from chains, to the different stitches. I use single ALOT.
bruh I still don’t get it 😭
shoutout to my fellow knife slayers
I don’t get it 🙁
I feel like you still need a strong grip over the yarn on the right-hand side because for the life of me the yarn keeps slipping GOD I WANT TO MAKE THIS WORK 😭😭
Oh my god, thank you. I had a problem with index finger strain in crochet that doesnt exist when i knit. Problem solved, i'm off to the races.

Hi - this is how I’ve always crocheted, but I can’t knit like it. People would see it and think I was knitting.
what if u called it the ‘bob and weave’ method lmfao or like passback or back & forth
i’ve been learning this method and it’s really fucking helpful omg barely any pain and it’s fun 😊
decided i’m gonna call it ‘bob & weave’ because it’s funny, makes me laugh, and I feel like it’s accurate
i don’t get it
I used to knit and then when i started crochet like you i crochet as if i were knitting which drives my friend crazy when she watches me but it feels comfy doing it that way
My name is Alexandria.
You should copyright the Masse method.😊
Crochetknit
I gave up 😂😂😂😂
