I think it makes a lot of sense to keep the waterproof accessible like you do, and also with the dry bit kept on the inside, if you keep it in the dry bag then use it, where do you put it when the rain stops! Your not going to want to put a wet jacket back in with your dry stuff! I like to keep everything where I know where it all is and be able to find it with my eyes shut, and you cant do that if you have to move stuff about after use. It's really all about personal preference isn't it.. and the only way to really dial these things in is to try them out on runs well in advance of any event. As always with us long distance runners its about adapting on the go too if needed. You can plan as much as possible but the little unexpected things can blow your day out to an epic and I believe its how you deal with the unexpected that makes the difference, and a good way to prepare for that is to experiment and make mistakes along the way. As always Claire, another great video and sounds like you have lots more to trickle onto the channel. Looking forward to the next ones.

The Petzl headlamp should have a Lock function (push and hold > 3 sec).

My better half has just bought me a treat, the Rat Race Ultra 12 running vest with bottles and I love it, never used one before. I’ve seen that they have had some problems with stitching but I’m pretty sure I can spend half hour bulking the stitches up to reduce the risk of issues. This video has helped me figure out what to put in which pockets as there are a lot! But I have no idea what all the elastics and attachments are for 😱

Brills thank you, I wasn’t sure if they had specific purposes lol

Wow - so many great tips and so much stuff in such a small space!!
I also use a list to tick off what I put in my pack as if I do it a day or so before a race I start having doubts and pull everything out lol. My shorts have pockets so on longer runs with a bulging pack I put extra food in those. Great thought on the jacket size too.

I spent the first 30 seconds trying to work out where it was!!!

No. I figured that was possibly the A1 but couldn't find any other obvious clues - other than the town behind you!! I quickly gave up and tried to concentrate on the video!

Replying here as I liked this one a lot! :)
I agree, my apologies, I didn't mean to say it in a way to copy someone. It was more to learn and consider, especially the editing and production part of Darwin which matches his style, which I think matches your style.
Also, it's funny how on certain creative medias people are "afraid to copy" but literally in every facet of life, all we do is look at the world around us, assimilate, copy, improve, add our twist and we try and do that from as many sources as possible ;)
Ah that's awesome :) Al is really great! I have all his books, followed him a long time and also sent him a suggestion for a website design for a "get into running" website!
Well I didn't really design it :) I was just giving one very quick example of how a slightly more "user friendly" layout could work that's all! Again, just something to get brain juices flowing!
If KJ did the Barkely, after he completed it, they would have to make it so impossible that it would be the end of it! ;)
I used to have 2 companies, one in logistics software and the other an artisanal slow food business supporting local slow food producers who are being wiped out by supermarkets. Right now I'm full time dad to my 6 month daughter so that's a very different job! ;) My big passion is cooking though, so most likely in the near future I will be opening a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. Also, one thing I really love is trying to help people, I particularly like web and logo design and in business seeing how things can be improved to help support people and causes I believe in!
How did you get into running if you don't mind me asking and what's your thoughts on minimalist (or "barefoot") running shoes? :)

@@wildgingerruns You know - there is maybe something interesitng here. I HATED sport at school, which was overseen by podgy blokes tracksuits shouting at you as you played rugby in the mud, in a Scottish autumn. I went running only because some of us were rubbish at rugby and did our very best to avoid said being trampled in mud (I used to come back from rugby in pristine white shorts and t-shirt). But my days were numbered. Hence running. In my early 20s I did a variety of things, weights, dance, yoga. I realised that you could change your body and didn't have to be 'sporty'. Your body wasn't a given, but would respond - a revelation to a bookish, uncoordinated guy with glasses. And you DIDN'T HAVE TO CATCH A BALL IN THE PROCESS. OR THROW ONE. Now I've done hill races, just got back to running after a few years off and did an ultra with a ton of ascent. Still don't think of myself as 'sporty'...

I don't know a lot about running but if your doing a multi day run don't you need some kind of tarp or bivy to sleep under?

Great video, you didn’t mention the brand of wind proof you used , and seemed to be missing from the discerption.

I thought the video was great. I think you could tweak your lighting and sound room. I recommend 120 lumens at the minimum, your light is also a self defense weapon, and to disorient someone you are needing at least 120. What are your thoughts on the Suunto MC-2 Compass instead of the one you have. Not much more, and seems to have a lot more features?

How many ultras do you do per year? And how long have you been running/how long did it take you to build up for that?

Bit of an odd question: you didn't mention toilet paper - was that included in your first aid kit or didn't you take any?
