The CF Martin company is a true American treasure. I bought a D28 when I was 18 and I have played it for the past 15 years. It's the guitar I will play until I die. I've had a lot of work done to it - scalloped the braces, popsicle brace taken out, new waverly tuners, bone nut/saddle, and put a different tortoise pickguard - they all improved the sound and I fell in love with the instrument all over again. If there was a fire and I had to grab only one physical possession - it would be my D28. I love that guitar.
Tuners and a pick-guard improved the sound? Ye, okay. Also a bone nut only affects the sound when playing open string, you need to upgrade to bone frets too so the sound is consistent across the whole fretboard.
My father introduced me to Martin when I was young. He had a 1945 D-18 and it had a great sound. I have since had a Martin HD-28 made in 1998 and a D-45. I still love the mellow sound of the mahogany back D-18 and I also love the smell of the D-18. Always reminds me of my dad and his playing the guitar before going to bed late at night. I will always cherish the memories of dads D-19 that was purchased new near the end of WW ll. The war is behind us and the guitar I gave to my nephew but I still dream of playing that guitar and the sight of my father playing it too. Thank you Martin for making great guitars and thank you dad for purchasing a Martin back in 1945.
Bought my OM28 in the mid 80's here in the UK, Norwich. Chris Martin was over here promoting Martin guitars. He was doing a promo. at a public house just two miles away from my home. At the end, we were invited to try the models on display. I bought the OM28 that night. This guitar has just got better with age and it's worth every penny I paid. Thank you.
I have a martin D 12-20 from 1965. My folks were not rich, but if they saw we were serious about playing an instrument they would get us a good one. They figured we were more apt to keep playing a good instrument. I used to play it a lot, and wore the frets down twice. I had some small repairs done recently. I love this guitar, and always have. It puts out a nice sound. I used to play in coffee houses and church basements, and in bars with open mikes. I would like to start up with that again. I know there are other good guitar makers, but I am privileged to have one made by Martin.
Fell in luv with Martin guitars in the past few years....I have a 2011 M-36 with beautiful set of EI rosewood and excellent tone/projection....2012 HD-28V is super great sounding/playing....1970 D-18 that great vintage, dry tone with piano sustain....all great!
A nice explanation through some great Martin guitars, all different voices and tones, all very pleasing in looks and sound as we have come to expect from this company. Thank you.
Did a factory tour in 2019, detouring from a road trip, Toronto to Nashville. Great day in the factory. I have a D28, and a DX12…best value 12 string on the market, in Marten’s X budget range. UK price now around £750, with great Fishman factory fitted pickup.
BTW, the ridiculously high nut on my guitar was fixed by me, using my Collings D1A nut as a guide. It was perfect. Now, so is the GE. Elderly refretted it for Martin under warranty and I asked the tech (Andy) to make the edges exactly as Collings does it. Now they are perfect and I can do aggressive pull-offs on the 1st&6th strings. My GE is a 2001. I've played many since that are right when new. Overall, the GE kicks the Collings butt as far as great tone. Good vs. Great. D28M also great.
I've had several Martins, all great guitars. I like 35's and 28's, 000's and D's. I haven't had one for a while I'm too poor but one day I'd like to get a D18 and just keep it and not have to pawn or sell it.
Tim, where are the 12 Fretters? I would think the 12 fret models (which I believe came first) would be the "iconic" ones. Folklaw tells us that Dick Ronmini and PP&M are the reason these instruments reappeared in the 60s. Great instruments; incredible sound. So very pleased they are still available - the public should know more about them.
George Hergen it’s great when you are buying a secondhand 12fret guitar on an online auction. The majority of people don’t know or appreciate how much better they sound and that they are more comfortable to play down the cowboy end 😋cheers from NZ
you can buy a Guild, a Maton or whatever. But when you buy a Martin, you buy something special. Every Martin has a soul. I was like a kid in a candy shop when i bought my Martin. It is indeed the guitar you get most attached to in life.
Bought a HD-28V back in 2008 and love it. Gets better with age. The only issue I've had with it is the abalone fret markers are starting to fade dark. Wish I know how to get them to brighten up again
Love Martin guitars what a beautiful sound.i have 4 of them including a1947 d 45 I love playing it had Martin put brokenarrow In inlay down the fretboard looks killer yo.
The D35 is my favorite Martin hands down...but to say it's the first one that comes to mind as the "iconic" Martin is off-base to say the least. Sheesh. D28 or D18.
@@51MontyPython Very true. So as the Standard D-35. Scalloped bracing is so finnicky! There's a big reason why there were discontinued and that is due to the "durability," because it not as good as non-scalloped. Also here's what people don't understand about the non-scalloped bracing - the wood will eventually expand over the years and would create more of that "iconic rich bass boomy sound." Yes you might get that from the HD-28 right away but the D-28 you would later on the more the guitar gets old
Martin guitars are the best. I bought a Huss and Dalton OM-R custom with Italian spruce top. Well made with great woods, but did not have the sound. Sold it and bought an OM_28V, changed the strings to L-200's John Pierce and even though it's new, the sound is great. Give it about 5 years and it'll be right there. My 71 D-35 looks new, no reset yet has that Martin sound. Om-42 and D-42 or D-45 are great.

I play an Eastman Cutaway Acoustic guitar - shortly ago a visitor of our Acoustic Rock Concert asked me, if this was a Martin guitar. He thought that I play a Martin, seroiously. That means to me that you can buy a China-hand made Acoustics guitar which has is all solid wood etc. which has perhaps no difference to the very expensive Martin guitar. However, nobody will pay much for a used Eastman guitar, but very much for a Martin guitar because of the "Voodoo" on it, thats the way it is...
Martin's are iconic, their pre war stuff is some of the most beautiful looking and sounding guitars I have ever had the pleasure to experience. I would love to have one of those. But for my money today, give me a Taylor or Santa Cruz. The new 814 is the best acoustic I have played.
Martin is like a 10 minute drive away from me. I've been there a couple of times...its awesome! Defiantly the best acoustic guitars! I'm still trying to save my money for one.
2) You also said the D16 had scalloped braces b4 the D-28 and HD-28. The D28 originally had scalloped braces and the HD got them in 1976. I had a 1st year D16 in the early 90's I think. I played hundreds of guitars at major shops to find my GE and my D28Marquis. I played lots of Martins. NONE of them were "bad guitars" as some have alleged, but the fit and finish needs to improve (I think it has since I last bought one). Right now the D28M Madagascar rocks, & CS28-11 Gruhn's take on it.
EXCELLENT! i just got the D35 this past year. Lovin it! See pic, the one on the left is the D35 the one one the right is a DC-1E. Deided on both, the DC has a built in pre=amp. i think the tonal quality of Martins is unsurpassed ....although, i have to admit, ive been looking at the Gibson Deluxe Songwriter/Artist series. The aesthetics are real hip, abalone sound hole, mustache bridge, etc......going to go play it.........
Hi. I'm in the market for a Martin dread. My absolute favorite acoustic of all time is David Crosby's D-45 (as seen on the BBC), which I believe is a 1968 model (supposedly). From what I hear (can not confirm this), it had Brazilian rosewood B/S, and German (?) spruce for the top. Since I can't afford a D-45 (let alone with Brazilian and that type of spruce -- if you can even find one), I'm looking for the closest dread to those specs of that particular guitar. Now, what I need to know is, would the braces on those D-45s be scalloped or non-scalloped, and standard or forward shifted X-bracing? I guess the current HD-28s are closest to the _CURRENT_ D-45s, but what about for the specific year/model I'm wondering/asking about? Would appreciate any reply.
I have an HD-16R LHS as well. And a 000-15. Both killer guitars, but to MY ears, just about anything handmade sounds better than the majority of the manufactured stuff (martin, gibson, taylor ect). But its all about what sounds best to your ears.
DRFilmCo Blueridge are made of the same kind of wood. The quality of the wood is substantially lower though, and they're kind of the scrap pieces, since all the good stuff generally gets reserved by Taylor, then Martin. The build quality as well doesn't come close. The frets are cheaper, and the bracing (especially if scalloped) is somewhat unfinished. They get the job done, especially for the price, but they don't compare with the real thing. Especially considering once you get into the better ones, you would be better off getting a used Martin for a few hundred more. Martins are made to last for life, but it comes at a price.
The wood grain figuring on the back of this d-35 I saw wasn't straight through all the way up and down. Would that just be aesthetic? Or is it less desirable? Sounded pretty good to me.
They are expensive. Some of the custom shop models sell for $7000 or so. The D18, D16, D28 and a few others are awesome guitars that sound perfect. Plus you can find them used very reasonably priced. I have a DX1 that sounds and plays amazing & I got it used for $350. I've got a Gibson J45 that I love too, but the tone of the DX1 is way better.
Sure wish you'd make more wider necks. I LOVE my D-35S, but it's so hard to find neck widths to fit large male hands, 1 11/16th seems to be a "standard," and it's just too thin.
I don't own any Taylors, I have three Martins, and nine other guitars. The neck widths I prefer are 1 7/8, found on my D-35S and also on my Ayers. Why you need to be abusive and shove 1 3/4 nuts down my throat, I do not understand, but I own a couple of those, too, and they are just not wide enough. I also play two custom-made classical models, which have a nut width of 2". I'll leave this interchange posted so others can see how abusive you are, and know to avoid conversing with you.
One question Sir.... What happened to the D41 and D42 in your flagship review? Both beautiful guitars, in their own right. They easily rival the D45 apart from the excessive bling IMO, especially pricewise in these globally, hard hit times, as I have tried/played them all, and when comparing sound value to value for money these beauts deliver everytime.
My M38, which I bought in 1980, is a better sounding guitar than any of the dreadnoughts. I agree, the D models aren't the only flagship models. Hey, a oooo28 ain't bad.
I had an SWD-GT and the Grain on the sides matched perfectly with the grain on the neck,( was it made from the same piece of wood ? ) it was a beautifully made guitar in American Cherry, by someone who gave a fuck. As much as I loved it..... I bought a Martin Rosewood Dreadnaught for the Beautiful Sounds it makes, Neither of which are mentioned here. You don't have to buy the Standards, get off Piste and remember, they all sound different.
I wish I could afford one so bad ! Only if I knew more about guitars when I was a kid ! My grandfather used to play, They were most likely cheaper back in his day, I don't know what they cost in the 40's....Anyone know??? He was a drill Sargent in WWII , I was born in 79 by the way
Skulletor my father purchased his D-18 in 1945. He paid $75 for it. Still playing this wonderful guitar. I do not that a two years later the same guitar went for $125. Hope this answers your question.
American-made Martins are certainly beautiful sounding and well made. The bad news is guitars that cost $2500 and up are only very marginally better than an Eastman hand-made in China guitars which cost less than half as much and use high quality woods. If you want authentic and you got the cash, buy a Martin.
Understanding Martin's models is confusing as hell. They pretty much all look & sound alike to my old ear. I like them best, though, from others I guess. They seem uninteresting in a way.I've been playing one for 11 yrs.A Dread DS, it's ok...had a Yamaha that sounded as good.Been playing since 64. Took the factory tour.Nice folks.
Have a D28 bouiaD18 in 69 stolen bought a D28 in 69 stolen bought a D28 in 70 stolen have D28 have had it for over a decade Sweetness is putting it mildly a ol friend ask me if I still had my guitar I just started nope dont leave anywhere with out it .....thanks Mom and Dad hoping to play it when we meet again...
To me the D-35 is the guitar which has the best looking (with the bracing around the neck) but the sound is too flat to me... nothing sounds like the HD 28 and you know that God exist when you play on a HD28V
overpriced for all of the advertising...ive played older martins and i have a blueridge 280a(made in china) but sound booms way more than any martin i have played. im not saying they are junk but just cause its made in america doesnt mean its better.
Martin is a wonderful guitar, but Taylor for me is far better... Try a 814 deluxe grand auditorium from Taylor and you’ll be convinced...Nothing compares to that.
Look, I haven't been involved in your arguments, and I, too, love Martins. But there are great guitars of other brands. Different strokes for ... I have owned Collings and Santa Cruz, and have played very good Bourgeois as well. They ALL have better quality control than Martin! It pains me to say it! My D-18GE had a mile-high nut and lousy frets. They refretted it at their cost, but it would not happen with Collings, SGCG, & others. Martin is too focused on profit and not enough on fit&finish!
Forcd2CreateChannel A very broad statement based on your experience with one guitar. In my experience, most “generalizations “ merit “corporal “ punishment. Or in your case, kept “private”.
Martin doesnt tune their tops to the precision of a Bouregois. You may get the right combination and get an amazing guitar. The two Martins I have are a great example of that. But, there not all that great. Ive played hundreds of Martins, some good, some great, but also some just straight up bad. Ive also played an awful lot of bourgeois, and they are a lot more consistant. My friend owns Clay Hess's old Bourgeois Vintage D. It will blow the doors off any martin made in the past 30 years or so.
Calling people clueless and calling other vendors' products SHIT is NOT abusive? That's news to me. I don't need you to IMAGINE what I need. I have owned dozens of guitars in the last 60 years, and I KNOW what I need. Now quit f'n bothering me with your self-aggrandizing nonsense. Shoo, fly.
Record your guitars in a better room and with a god mic, so we can really appreciate the Martin quality. Sorry, but in this video the guitars sound awful.
Great guitar as long as you stay away from the mexican models. They should have recorded the guitars a little better.....doesn't do the guitars justice.
Elijah Monn You are so right! The Mexican made models may not stand up against the products from Nazareth, but they are great sounding Martin guitars that are within the financial reach of others that might otherwise be forced to buy a Taylor!
I bought a OOOX1 in 2006, possibly the cheapest normal-size Mexican Martin. Back and sides are not even wood, they are composite. I bought it as my camping, travel, River-running, beater guitar. I love it. Extremely comfortable to play, nice tone, very punchy sound when it was new. And perfect intonation, which I can’t say for my D-28. For many years it was my favorite guitar, above my D28. Now it is 15 years old and the volume and tone seem diminished, and it needs a re-fret job. I am actually considering spending the $XXX to refret what was originally a $500 toy guitar. The MiM Martins are perfectly fine, for what they cost.
Massively overpriced and overrated guitars. AMI Sigma are (Kindred in the US)making copies and they blow the lower priced Martins that cost twice as much out, of the fucking water!
+quad1000 That comment proves that's exactly what you are, I'm pretty confident that you have never even tried a modern AMI Sigma after you make comments like that.
+Eric R I'm angry because American guitar production is anachronism living off its past and producing overpriced products which are outrageous priced due to your unacceptably high(in a global economy) labour costs . It also about time your living standards started to be forced down, I certainly want to see the employees of your guitar companies wages driven down to the level of the Asians because the emperors new clothes of branding will be revealed. Global customers will no longer be prepared to pay your exorbitant rates when they start realizing the Asians are producing equal products for a lot less money.
Tuners and a pick-guard improved the sound? Ye, okay. Also a bone nut only affects the sound when playing open string, you need to upgrade to bone frets too so the sound is consistent across the whole fretboard.
Damn Deal Done who cares mate, he loves his guitar
Damn Deal Done you are missing the point
So you'd leave mom or grandma to burn while you sit outside with your D28, singing the blues? Tsk Tsk... Awful.

The D45 is the guitar to strive for, and it sounds really unique. That's why I'm not going to describe it's sound, nor will I play it for you! =D
God Bless the Martin crew ! You do a lot of work and give the commitment and care so we can enjoy all the magic.
IMO Martin is the best acoustic guitar $ can buy. Next time i'll be in PA seeing my good friends, i'm sure gonna visit the factory! 👍👍

My grandfather used to own a martin d18, but my uncle brought it to a party and it got smashed and my grandfather hasn't played guitar for decades
Meh the custom shop is porn-guitars for collectors. You buy a stock D28 or D18 or whatever and you have a guitar for life. No need for bling.
Hey Martin what happened to the D-18 how come I don't see it anymore in your website?
Sure wish you'd make more wider necks. I LOVE my D-35S, but it's so hard to find neck widths to fit large male hands, 1 11/16th seems to be a "standard," and it's just too thin.
Alan Land d45 has a good wide neck
Check out the 000 MMV at Guitar Center. Unbelievable. If you find one there, snap it up. I believe they are custom just for GC.
I use the hd28 and the d18,,,Two complete different guitars
Thanks for the info
Do you have any left-handed Martin guitars in your picking parlor?
Always wanted a D45 but sadly way out of my reach. Stunning guitar though - how could you not want to play it every day? :-)
D35. Best guitar ever
D-42
wooden eye love to visit cheers from OZ.
Because he wants to sell the D45. Not let you know about the less expensive versions.
is the sound kval off ? .. the guitars sounds muddy ,not at all what im used to with these models.
HD-35 is about the best I have heard, and some d41s,d45s, of course. Can someone suggest the best for playing rock?
SeattleLA a lot of different choices by a lot if different artists, but the 28 is probably the one I see on stage most often . Elvis loved his!
My M38, which I bought in 1980, is a better sounding guitar than any of the dreadnoughts. I agree, the D models aren't the only flagship models. Hey, a oooo28 ain't bad.
These are such beautiful instruments I'm afraid to play them because I'm afraid I would damage them.
Greenfield 2nd to none!
Taylor Gibson Guild are all good , but Martin is something different and better especially the D45
Let's play the "iconic: drinking game...
Every dreadnought guitar is a copy of a Martin. Most are junk but some are very good indeed.
Took the factory tour.Nice folks.
serian tan amables de mandar un catalogo de guitarras y si me pueden mandar los precios ,me interezan- gracias.
.
Antonio San German Lopez
“interezan” ??? Con z ???
Make that with sour cream, and extra cheese
Is the string spacing the same on the D-35 and D-28.
bluto212 depends how you tune it

This video is called Martin Flagship Models?
Should be called Martin "we have a ton of dreadnaughts to get rid of" Models.
Bring on the OMs and 000s.
Can I have one?
To me the D-35 is the guitar which has the best looking (with the bracing around the neck) but the sound is too flat to me... nothing sounds like the HD 28 and you know that God exist when you play on a HD28V
❤🎸🤟🏾
Your uncle wasn't the guy in Animal House was he?
overpriced for all of the advertising...ive played older martins and i have a blueridge 280a(made in china) but sound booms way more than any martin i have played. im not saying they are junk but just cause its made in america doesnt mean its better.
my friend has a d-35 and we both think its too bassy.D-28 is the way to go
hirskdubbi Try a set of light strings, if you already haven’t.
R$? martin D45?????????
I have a Gibson J 185 EC Rosewood, with an Ebony Fingerboard..I'll take a Pepsi test with it against any Martin made in the last 20 years.
Martin is a wonderful guitar, but Taylor for me is far better... Try a 814 deluxe grand auditorium from Taylor and you’ll be convinced...Nothing compares to that.
pierre Beaudoin especially if you like the sound of tin.
My grandfather thought me how to play....like a donkey...Watching and listening to guitar videos on UA-cam can really be truly draining
stevedgolfer taught him only 3 chords.
You must be a tall dude. the D looks like a OOO in your hands.......
My d28 sounds better than all these . What a guitar !
yumpladukfoo glass house and stones threw
Calling people clueless and calling other vendors' products SHIT is NOT abusive? That's news to me. I don't need you to IMAGINE what I need. I have owned dozens of guitars in the last 60 years, and I KNOW what I need. Now quit f'n bothering me with your self-aggrandizing nonsense. Shoo, fly.
Record your guitars in a better room and with a god mic, so we can really appreciate the Martin quality. Sorry, but in this video the guitars sound awful.
all flagship models are dreads? gross.
Great guitar as long as you stay away from the mexican models. They should have recorded the guitars a little better.....doesn't do the guitars justice.
David Kennedy my dreadnought junior sounds great. And the workmanship is outstanding. The best part is an all solid guitar for $1200 NZ.
They really couldn't get someone that can play to demonstrate the guitars? Martins don't even sound particularly good just plain strumming like that.
Massively overpriced and overrated guitars. AMI Sigma are (Kindred in the US)making copies and they blow the lower priced Martins that cost twice as much out, of the fucking water!
+Tony smith um...no. and I'm no guitar snob. but...no.
+quad1000 That comment proves that's exactly what you are, I'm pretty confident that you have never even tried a modern AMI Sigma after you make comments like that.
+Tony smith You can drive around a knockoff Ferrari, but it still isn't a Ferrari.
I own a hd-28 and a sigma 00-18 ....and the latter is a much better instrument
Why not leave this forum for discussing guitars and keep the sarcastic and ignorant remarks for your President?....just sayin'.....
Wow man, this vid SUCKED...You do NOT represent Martin well...Or, do you?
