What I loved about this show was the way Dick Clark treated the bonus round, especially the $100,000 one. He really made it seem bigger that it was and gave it just this real tension.

The all-time best television game show, IMO. To belong on this show, contestants and celebs had to be not only intelligent, but quick and clever, and possess a broad vocabulary. A slice of daytime heaven; an oasis! Well, there were some pretty bad weeks here and there with "matching" terrible celebrity players - at least this gave the contestants a fair shot!

Back in the 70s, when this was taped at a theater on W. 58th Street, NYC, NO ONE was allowed to run up on stage, not even a spouse - they'd let them up during the commercial break, but never would they let the shots be interrupted. Also, I was amazed how much smaller the set looked in real life. We used to go during all school breaks, and especially during the summer, and I have a bookful of autographs I got from Pyramid tapings, even Dick Clark himself.

My dad and I went to see a show from the current run of $100,000 Pyramid during its first season. I think the studio was somewhere in the West Sixties. The studio had always been used for soaps so it wasn't used to having an audience. There were so many rules (like leaving your cell phone and getting a claim check before you could get in the elevator). But the studio was ridiculously small.

This was true of several incarnations, especially the early $10,000 Pyramid versions. You can find clips all over UA-cam… look for the $25,000 Pyramid pitch film, a pyramid run with Jack Klugman… Tony Randall would quite often act so calm about it, but would give his contestant partners a smile because it seemed like he did not want to overshadow their celebrations. Getting through that bonus round has always been a huge thrill. :)
