  • The cybersecurity industry is booming with well paying opportunities, but it can be quite complicated and frustrating navigating the landscape of getting a job (especially your first).
    Unrealistic requirements, confusing acronyms, and what to do first are all realities you will immediately crash into almost immediately.
    There is opportunity for EVERYONE in cybersecurity! Whether you are 22 and entering the workforce, 38 and transitioning out of the military, 45 and wanting to stop working a job you’ve not enjoyed for years (or any other scenario that makes you unique), we can get you in the field.
    In this talk, I’m going to pull back the curtain on working in the industry and help you understand:

    * The different jobs in the industry (there is more than just ‘hacker’)
    * The different industries with pros and cons for each
    * How to get marketable skills (for free)
    * How to find a cybersecurity job
    * How to document those marketable skills on a resume for impact
    * How to crush your interview

    Thank you for such a great video yet again, Gerry. You're right, "You as a Solution" is such a powerful phrase to consider when creating a resume. How fast, how much saved, how you made change...ALL these quantifiable elements should be your USP "bullet-points" every time.

    This is solely based on my personal experience, and although I may have mentioned it before, I feel it's worth repeating. I want to clarify that I'm not from the United States, which immediately sets me apart from applicants in the United Kingdom. The way they treat applicants there differs slightly due to the fewer job opportunities available compared to the larger size of the country. This situation leads to a few key points.
    In my experience, breaking into the field of cyber security often requires a background in IT, preferably with a focus on networking or system administration. It's beneficial to have a bachelor's degree in a computing-related discipline since employers tend to prioritize hiring graduate IT engineers for cyber positions. I know this because I've worked in cyber security for almost a decade myself, and it seems like a typical bachelor's degree in computer science is highly valued. However, contrary to what I initially believed, it's not always a strict requirement. Additionally, I pursued a master's degree in cyber security, but I realized that it's not necessarily essential for entering the field.
    During my bachelor's program, I had the advantage of pursuing Cisco Certifications, which proved to be excellent credentials. Armed with a bachelor's degree and relevant Cisco certifications, I didn't encounter significant difficulties in securing an IT position. From there, I transitioned into the field of cyber security. However, I eventually decided to return to more general IT work because I found cyber security to be extremely stressful. Ultimately, I prefer roles that offer a lower level of stress. Please note that I'm not suggesting that stress is inherently negative; it's simply a personal preference. if you possess the necessary experience, particularly with the tool sets utilized within the organization, you're off to a promising start. That concludes my main points. However, I must express a minor concern. In the IT sector, individuals can come from diverse backgrounds, often with minimal formal education. Consequently, there can be significant disparities in quality and standards, even within the same team. This situation can present certain challenges, unlike more established professions where there are specific requirements and standards to uphold. Unfortunately, that is not the case in IT. With that, I will conclude my remarks.

    Great content! My question is...how do you get into cybersecurity with no experience AND being an older person (I'm 53). I feel like that's 2 strikes against most people. I recently received my Security+, CEH and Splunk certs. I'm also retired military, but it doesn't seem to do any good lol. Any advice you offer will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gerry. I am just now watching the video. I currently work as an account executive in the property and casualty insurance field. I have been doing this for the last 15 yrs and want to transition into Cybersecurity. Im currently pursuing my masters in info security. Any suggestions as to how I can pivot from my current position? I am interested in GRC but also took a basics C++ course that I had to drop due to some family issues at the time. Can my current skills transfer over? Thanks for the great content by the way. So far my favorite channel!

    Missed the live stream unfortunately due to work but would love to hear your thoughts on transitioning from a career in education (psych background) to cybersecurity. I feel like there are a lot of transferrable skills, but your insight would be great!

    • @SimplyCyber
      @SimplyCyber  2 роки тому +1

      Replay is pretty good plan b Stacey! Def transferable skills. First thought is around security awareness focus as your background I assume helps understand changing human behavior, reinforcing best practices, etc. This would fall under GRC work. If you wanted to get more technical, soc analyst could be interesting as you may have a better understanding of the pysche of a threat actor and motivations. All this to say, no matter what role you go after your psych education bg as an asset to decoding/understanding the human side of cybersecurity which can be difficult since the tech side gets a lot of the attention. Best wishes.
