Eric Church - Why Not Me

- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- This past Friday, I played the Harvest Music Festival in Vegas. I was the headliner. I looked out there, at that crowd, in that place. It was our last show of the year and I watched them hold American flags up during “How ‘Bout You.” I watched them put an American scarf around my neck during “Springsteen,” they held records up when I played “Record Year,” they held boots up when I played “These Boots.” I was so moved by it, mainly because I looked at ‘em and went “This is my crowd. I’ve seen this crowd all year, they’re mine.” They came from all over the country because it was our last show, and I did something different on the last song on “Springsteen.” I jumped down on the speaker, and I went down, actually on the floor, it was a high stage so I actually jumped out on the ground. And there was a little row that split the crowd, and it went all the way to my front of house guy and it split the crowd on either side so, the crowd was on the right side, the crowd was on the left side. I went down the right side and I shook everybody’s hand and I told them “Thank you for coming, it’s been a heck of a year, it’s been a hell of a year actually.” And I went all the way down the right side, waved at my sound guy, came back up the left side, smiling faces, hands in the air, pictures being taken. I jumped back up on stage and played “Holdin’ My Own” and “A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young.” And 48 hours later, in those places that I stood, was carnage. Those are my people. Those are my fans.
I didn’t want to be here tonight. I didn’t want to play guitar. I didn’t want to walk on this stage, but last night, let me try to get this out, last night somebody sent me a video of a lady named Heather Melton and she was talking to Anderson Cooper on CNN and she had on our Church Choir Tour shirt. And he said, “what brought you to Vegas?” and she goes “We went there to see Eric Church because he was Sonny’s [her husband who died] it was his guy, and we went there to see his guy.” And then she said “We have tickets for the Grand Ole Opry tomorrow night.” And there’s a, over here, section 3, row F, if you’re there in row F, there’s some empty seats and that’s their seats. And, I’m gonna tell you something, the reason I’m here, the reason I’m here tonight, is because of Heather Melton and her husband Sonny, who died, and every person that was there. I’ll tell you something, I saw that crowd. I saw them with their hands in the air. I saw them with boots in the air. And what I saw, that moment in time that was frozen there’s no amount of bullets that can take away. None.
And that night, something broke in me, on Sunday night when that happened. And the only way I’ve ever fixed anything that’s been broken in me is with music. So I wrote a song...
Eric (Chief)... For 13 years I've searched for a song that filled a void. I know this song is for those lost and those grieving what happened in Las Vegas... but it asks the question so many of us have asked in our lives. For me it was 13 years ago. I left my unit and the deployed right after. Two of my buddies were taken from this world in Mosul... one of them had his first born on the way back home. That guy, Sgt David Mitts, was the guy who took my place when I left the unit. I've asked myself for years why him... why not me?
This song is, as many of your songs are, raw, pure, real and from the passion of the heart and from every fiber of your soul... and ours.
This is why I've been a member of the Chior and a fan for so long.
If you read this... thank you! Thank you for putting to words what we all felt, and still do! God bless everyone affected by the R91 tragedy... here's hoping, and praying, we see a better future!
It's why I come back here and listen. Afghanistan 2011. RIP DMF, my best friend and brother....it was supposed to be my platoon, but he got it instead....still weighs...why him and why not me. I'll ask the God of infinite wisdom. God bless you brother.
This is an example of pure bravery and unselfishness. I’m glad there are still good people in this world. Thank you for your service.
Sergant David Mitts, you are not forgotten. We who remain, for whom you made the ultimate sacrifice...
we never knew you. Yet we know this:
"Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends". How much more then, for a stranger? May God comfort and bless your family.
I'm sorry for your loss, thank you for ur service and above all ur words i just read.!..Today is June 24, 2020, as you may know the world has gone a little crazy! Never think, why not me, because God has a purpose and a plan for you and only you! I never knew what soldiers and families sacrificed until my daughter got married and her man joined the army. We are in Tn. Them in Colorado, fort Carson. They have a 16 month old boy and a baby dew in two weeks....the dedication and strength and determination, bravery..I can go on and on! No telling what you've seen, experienced, lost, and only the Lord knows but So many people appreciate you, you had a gift that you were given when you were born and that was bravery, selflisness and a strength that only a few men and women have! I'm so proud to have read your comment and I hope this reaches you! In a few days on the 4th the day will have memories of your words for me! Please find a peace and happiness that you and all soldiers deserve!!! I salute you!!!! And thanks....👍💗💜💞😊💕💞😘
How do you feel about gun rights now?
I’ve never heard of Eric Church until October 6, 2017 4:38am.
But from that time on, I cannot forget the words that I just heard sung to me... to all of us.
Prior to this it was just a really bad story that I was reading and watching on the news. But now, at 5:19am, as I am crying in my bed next to my wife sleeping, and my children in the other rooms sleeping... now it is real. Now it has hit home. I realize that this could happen to me... to anyone of us.
I just want to live a simple life. Enjoy my family, my friends, and my hobbies. I wish I could guarantee a safe life for everyone of them, but I cannot. BUT I DAMN WELL WILL TRY.
I wish all my fellow lovers of live a beautiful today and a better tomorrow.
Keep living and keep rocking!
Thank you Eric Church
I’m glad I met you this morning.
Ron Klaiss I've been a fan of Eric for a long time, and he is such a wonderful person & musician. Your sentiments are just as beautiful as this song! Can't speak for everyone, but I think most of them would whole heartedly agree! God Bless 🙏🏼🇺🇸❤️💙
I to am a long time fan...you said it all brother..all I'll say is.. welcome to the club
May Almighty God bless you and your family sir. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. Take care.
Your words are words I could not find in this chilling tragedy. Thank you for saying what my heart feels. God Bless.
Grab all his albums. He's a keeper of the flame for all the classic country greats and his sound is the embers that are keeping the flame of true country playing today.
I’ve lost over 100 friends and coworkers in combat since 9/11 and I ask myself this question all the time. It always reminds me of the price of our freedom. Thanks Eric!
Thank you sir for your service and sacrifices
My aunt was killed in the shooting, and this song reminds us of her so bad... ❤
Sarah Davis Im so sorry

@@dannaporter6506 May your aunt meet God and Jesus while that maniac from that shooting is by Satan after what had done.

There is no one like The Chief. One of the best on country in all ways.
Such a gifted person. In his own grief not only able to write this but to sing it. If this doesn't make you hold who you love closer you have no soul.
The Chief at his finest.. Phenomenal song!
Brittany B The way he conveys emotions through song is mind blowing. He is one of the greatest of all time...Him and Stapleton are at the very top of country music, No one else is even close!
I grew up in Big Sandy, Tn and I knew Sonny Melton all my life. He was just a good ole country boy who loved everybody!! Went out to Vegas to hear his favorite artist Church!! He got shot for no reason. RIP bro!!!
Literally the best male artist in country music right now!!!
If you ask me Eric Church, you are our country music Jesus. You sure are the person who is moved by your fans, crowd, and music. You keep going. Music can't fix everything, but it changes people. Keep on writing, keep on strumming, and keep on singing Eric. Prayers to all victims families ❣️❣️

I was there at Rt.91 and Eric Church was the reason I went, put on an awesome show and he did own the crowd, got a fist bump and pics when he came down in the crowd, but wont let me post it here. Hats off to you E.C., you're a true class act!
Live every day like it's your last and save nothing for the next life.
Love God and love one another....
Powerful song Eric, God Bless and keep trusting the God of your salvation🙏
What an incredible piece of work immediately following one of our nation's darkest days to hold it together and write a masterpiece honoring the victims is truly amazing keep doing what you do brother don't ever change the demeanor of your music you make music people feel and it's a rare gift thank you for doing what you do
Eric Church gives me ALL THE FEELSHe has got to have an absolute beautiful soul, for it shines through all his music.
You don't need to listen to Eric Church to be able to appreciate this song. It's absolutely beautiful, and a meaningful way to remember the lives lost that day. Hope this can give strength to those affected personally by the attack. Love from Canada ❤️
Hanna
If you can’t like this song, you’re one wicked broken human being.
Eric Church is a legit, stand up guy. A lyrical mastermind
Eric Church a true stand up guy
I will remember watching the video for the rest of my life. Life's a precious thing and can be gone at anytime. God bless you Eric and the families of this tragedy.
You can hear Eric trying so hard to hold it together in between verses. I'm crying.
mustardsfire22 i just said this listening to this.
Eventually I heard he did start crying while he was singing this song.
You can tell he meant every word and that's a song that came from his heart! What a beautiful song for a terrible tragedy.
It's an amazing thing to watch a performer who really is heart broken for his fellow humans, in that moment you felt the authenticity of Eric Church, so many times after tragic events celebrities get up on stage and puke out generic sympathy, Eric Church truly is the real deal.
Would be great to buy this song and have the proceeds be donated to the victims.
Steve Carley not sure if he'll make it available for that or not, but if you purchase "Dear Hate" by Maren Morris all proceeds go to the victims and their families 🙏🏼🇺🇸
Steve that sounds like an amazing idea mate, I'd buy it
Good idea
Steve Carley should’ve released this on the desperate man album tbh
@@buttcrack36 , was disappointed it wasn't on there.
I was at the Opry that night and was looking forward to hearing "Springsteen". He didn't play it but I wasn't mad. It was special to be a part of this song. And he wrote it in like 2 days. Eric Church is the man
Eric Church is and will always be my favorite country artist because of the song "Why Not Me" its about the Las Vegas shooting he wrote it the next day or so after it happened and to do that after what happened and what he went through gains a lot of respect from me you must listen to it oh and I cant hear this without a tear in my eye thank you Eric you are an inspiration to me keep doing what your doing
such a incredible songwriter. how he wrote it in a day is a gift.
Song on replay as the tears stream down. He just wrote a song with the words that myself and 21,941 other survivors have been asking themselves for the last 4 days. This song will help us heal inside.
Veronica Avalos Your a survivor?
Yes I am.
I was there as well. Still hear the shots everytime I try to relax.
I feel you. Time will heal us all. Stay strong.
Tear jerking and raw. So much emotion from this man.
A song that's just another reason I listen to the wonderful music this man so beautifully crafts.
This guy is a great American. His words brought tears to my eyes. I pray for our country.
Blessed my dad survived
Thank you Eric for showing that fame and fortune have not changed you from the young man who went to SCHS and brought tears to our eyes with your senior solo in 1995 with your cover of "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. A moment in my life I will never forget.
Music definitely heals the broken for so many of us and this song is perfectly written because it is always the question we ask when a tragedy strikes.
My heart bleeds for everyone affected by the events in Las Vegas last Sunday night and I truly do not know the words to express my feelings for what they have all been through.
However, I do know that LOVE WILL UNITE US ALL and we can not, nor will we, allow hate & fear to win!
Love you Eric Church, keep up the good work and continue to show this world what is in your heart ❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸
this reminds me so much of Alan Jackson's Where Were You.
I'm sure He'll release it, I jsut hope he releases EXACTLY this one.
How he holds it together the whole way through is beyond me. This needs to go BEYOND viral. this could be the new national anthem IMO
You can hear his heart speak in this song! So sincere!
You sir are my hero. You are exactly what this world needs more of. You have changed my life with so many of your songs and im sure you have reached so many others. God bless you and your family!
When tragedy hits music heals the wounds of the brokenhearted. I am not much of a country fan but Eric what a great tribute to the wonderful people who lost their lives on that horrible night. RIP to all the victims and their families.
The situation in which Eric Church wrote this song was such a sad and tragic day. And a day I will never forget for 2 reasons 1 because of the tragedy that occurred, and 2 because it was my birthday. That was one hell of a way to celebrate my birthday. Definitely not one I would have ever wanted to occur. One I would have prayed would have never happened. But it did and now we all need to pull together and help each other and make it right. Just the way the people did at the concert that night. America is a great country let’s remember that and keep it that way. Let’s not let some psycho destroy that for the rest of us. Thank you for the song Eric we all love you and your music, it is a beautiful song.
You are my favorite Country Singer, thank you for keeping it real, and God Bless You
Sitting her with tears streaming down. Just so humble.
Beautiful touching song. RIP all those God brought home. 😢
A beautiful, beautiful song with so much heart and soul. This song brings me to tears. Thank you for giving us a place to remember those who lost their lives that night.
This was the year I could not go, I have been too sick to travel so I gave my ticket up to another friend...and I lost friends, and others have been hospitalized, and a few...including an amazing retired army colonel and surgeon, who got his wife (my dear friend) to safety and then went to help anyone he could...who jumped in and did whatever they possibly could do to help and get people medical aid and out to safety. All amazing friends that I met through Route 91.
I sat up all night watching and listening to everything, praying for my friends and their safety...wishing my phone would go off so I could hear that they were all safe. There's a group of us that met over the course of a few hours, the first year, and became great friends...from all over the world...who were members of the VIP alumni group. We were always in the same place, right between the stage and that white VIP tent...and this year I wasn't there with them all. Six were killed, and I'm still not sure how many were hospitalized...our "area" was where that bastard shot at first, and kept shooting at throughout.
I have been numb and in EMS mode since Sunday night. I'm used to emergencies and triage, as the EMS person...so I guess it didn't seem to feel any different for me. I just started praying and hoping to hear from everyone...never breaking down or even feeling emotion, I thought.
Then I watched this video and listened to this song last night...and I fell apart. I should have been there, and I would have up until two months ago. This entire time I keep wondering why it wasn't me, why all those young kids who were just starting out in life and not me.
I'm nearly 38, I've experienced love and life and loss. I've had a pretty difficult life, but it's been a dang incredible one when the difficulties weren't there...and they will never get to live the life they deserved to live. And I kept asking God why all of those amazing people, and not me...why did you keep me...it was the one thing, on repeat, in my thoughts that I can't seem to stop hearing. And I guess, until hearing this song, it never really sunk in, just how emotional and painful this has been.
I wish I could shake Eric Church's hand for writing this song...and thank him for saying what is on repeat in so many of our minds. There's nothing like country music, and the country music nation...I've always been a country girl, even when my entire Persian family made fun of me (and still do) for it...because it has always felt like another family, another home... And this whole aftermath has shown what I've always felt...Country Strong, and now Vegas Strong too.
I am praying for you. There are no words. I wish I could give you a hug. I am so sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry for your loss, thank you for your story. I was there that night and it's just devastating. We will all make it through this together 🖤
life isn't easy but your voice helps me get through the day
4 years ago. Hope your doing well girl.
You are right there man. Hallelujah
God bless country music. God bless America.
5 years ago today it was one of the scariest days of my life. Today I come here to listen to this song.
This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it
Just wish he hadn't had to write it.😢
Whenever I listen to this song, it’s like I’m listening to it for the first time again.. I get the same chills, the same visions, and hurt from that night. I can never unsee the things i did and I never knew what survivor’s guilt felt like until after everything happened. It’s a horrible horrible feeling I will carry with me to my grave, RIP to all 58 from that night ❤️ Always and Forever
Why You and Why Not Me...the whistle at the end is awesome. "If I could have a drink" It would be a Gentleman Jack with the Chief!! Master of musical badassery in every way since day one (Country Music Jesus)
North Mississippi Loves Your Music!! Oxford...Tupelo...
HOTTY TODDY😎
Who are the heartless bastards who disliked this?! Absolutely beautiful and sincere.
been a fan from the beginning. keep on singing brother..
Tears...... Thumbs up......Unimaginable for those of us that weren't there .
I know a couple people have already asked this but who could dislike this song?! It's so beautiful and Eric's voice sounds like an angel
Took me 25 days but I finally listened to this song. I had watched his intro but wasn’t able to listen to the words. My heart was racing, my hands started shaking, but once it finished, I feel a sense of relief. Eric Church, you have proven once again why you are one of the greatest artists to grace this earth. That Friday night, we had one hell of a time. We danced all night and sang your songs at the top of our lungs. Thank you for what you do.
Violet Kanian You aren’t the only one that couldn’t even make it to the song after that speech. It was tough to listen to. I’m glad you are a survivor and not a victim. RIP to all the others that passed away that day.
Eric Church is one of my very favorite Country singers. He is down to Earth and doesn't put on a front for fame. His song writing is amazing as you can see with this wonderful example. My son Matt who was not a Country Music fan prior to hearing "Sinners like me" in his car became one. He was crying when he walked into the house and played it for me on his phone and since then on he is an Eric Church fan. I will tell him to listen to this song and read Eric's words. A true Christian that God put on the Earth to send a message.
Don't blame yourself. That is all I can say. I lost two friends to the war in Iraq and my best friend from childhood to the war in Afghanistan. Would-ya, could-ya, all that BS helps nobody. But your prayers will. Don't stop believing. Thank you Eric Church for being so strong after this tragedy in Vegas.
Too many beautiful songs to count from Eric leave me in tears, thinking thoughts which cannot easily be expressed. This is another one of those beautiful songs....
Great song. Hat's off to Eric Church once again...
To my Route 91 family 4 years later. Still hurting for those we loss and their families. Grateful to be here, and I wonder too…thanks Eric 💜🧡
Why the he’ll are there 500 thumbs down he’s literally singing for our families losses he would have rather died than all those other people that makes me mad
Keep it up ur my favorite singer eric 👍👍👍
Beautiful words....fits life.
I am so sorry that happen. I pray that you heal from that terrible tragedy. Thank you for your beautiful song. You are a one in a million Eric Church😢
So heartbreaking. Thank you for showing love to your fans and writing this song. We may not ever know all of the reasons "why", but we serve a Mighty, Omniscient, All-powerful God, and He shows us His goodness, His mercy and His love in all things. God bless and keep you and yours.
Lets all raise a glass to eric church...

It's hard to put into words what this song makes me feel, I guess it makes me feel the loss of all of the people lost in the Las Vegas shooting more than any of those news headlines could. It makes me realize just how lucky we are to be here, and what a blessing it truly is.
For those who want to READ. MY ENJOYMENT FOR this MAN . WELL , I could say maybe it was like JESUS does, or maybe it's all his music. But. For me he is a inspiration.
Eric Church man you're awesome
This is absolutely beautiful! This song really shows how genuine and big hearted you are. I'm speechless.
Amazingly emotional. Eric Church is one of the greatest!
There’s top-tier hero’s, there’s second-tier hero’s, and third-tier hero’s.
Our military, those with enough fame and outreach to impact the first and third tier, and those of us who recognize & support the first two; remove our hats & do right by this country. United we stand.
Country Music Jesus ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
