The last one of these I ever saw was at the late Stan Jay’s Mandolin Brothers in the early 90s. Even then the asking price was “have a guitar, have a house, you decide.” Beautiful Norm.

Only difference Michael doesn't push the old lady to the ground and walk on top of a car with someone in it. Great version with the loops though.
Holy Moly. I’d sell a kidney for that thing in a heartbeat. With the price, I’d imagine I’d have to. Closest thing to “the one” that I’ve ever seen.
The Les Paul Custom is for Black Tie engagements. The Penguin is for White Tie State Dinners w/ ladies in ballroom gowns.
Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is an analogy.

Gretsch is awesome.
John Entwistle had one of the original Penguins in his collection. Recall the GP article saying it was the rarest of the rare even way back then. But man what a tone - thanks chaps, that was good for the soul.

@@popcorny11 weird is to start off by thanking for no blues. Unhappiness for you is clearly if he had played the blues. Weird way to say "fresh air" if you ask me. Either way, I am grateful for the seeing and hearing this relic, with or without strange comments on youtube.

Beautiful looking guitar sounds good but I've never really been blown away by gretsch I don't think that this is any better than a Les Paul let alone one from the same era
Agreed, and although it looks like a white les paul with filtertrons and a different headstock, it sounds great.

Probably the guitar I've wanted the most on any GOTD ever. Anyone who "doesn't like Gretsch" usually just associates them with rockabilly and has never really played one. So much more versatile than a Les Paul and almost as crisp as a Fender. Plus Chris Cornell and John Frusciante played Grestchs.

But why is it that no big modern guitarists play them other than Billy Duffy (which isn’t exactly modern). I had a Gretsch and liked it but sold it. Changing strings on a Bigsby for a novice player is brutal. But Fender, Gibson/Epiphone/Ibanez seem to dominate. Gretsch seems niche.
