      Do you think since Sam Ash is closing that those exclusives will rise in value? Also how can a person tell if a guitar is a Sam Ash exclusive? Just thinking someone somewhere may be thinking this is another way of scammming people .Looking at an Epiphone Florentine.

    The Richlite era showed me how guitar players can be triggered into a full-blown melt down when their "formula" to what they think makes a guitar worthy is changed. "Jimmy Page's Les Paul had a rosewood fretboard, so mine has to have one too or there is just NO WAY my solo to Stairway will EVER sound the same as his!!" Meanwhile, the brutal reality is that it's not going to sound the same WITH the rosewood either. High dollar guitar manufacturers such as PRS are also to blame, making people believe that a guitar is worth $5,000 - $15,000 all because it has a fretboard made from some kind of Brazilian Wonder Lumber.

      I think it was more about price (although I'm sure there were people like that lol). If Gibson had taken a different approach & made richlite board guitars more affordable, I think folks might have been more open to its use but they went the opposite route. Gibson were nothing but a victim of their own greed.

    • @9dewittk
      @9dewittk 4 місяці тому

      @@jubei7259 I think an ebony fretboard blank (maybe differences between gaboon, african, Macassar, etc) costs anywhere from $10-$45. Let's round it up to $50 just to go all out. A Richlite blank is around $20. That being said, I guess knocking a Les Paul Custom down from $5,499 to $5,449 should do it, lol.

    I remember when boutique/high end guitar builders were using Richlite and it was touted as being BETTER than regular wood fret boards. It was also a premium charge for Richlite because it did NOT have any of the common issues that wood fret boards have with humidity and temp. changes. With no surprise, the guitar community ate it up. Until... When Gibson had to start using it, all those same people started to say how horrible Richlite was. It's crazy since they were paying more for Richlite to be put on boutique guitars just a year or two earlier.

      If Gibson does it, it must be bad.
      Then they go buy a copy with all of the same peculiarities, like the competitor's ad copy intended.

  • @FiendlingBM

    The pushback against richlite really says a lot about the guitar community in general. It's actually uniform black, doesn't crack, easy to clean and feels great. It's an improved ebony in every aspect that matters for a fretboard.

  • @joshs3905
    @joshs3905 Місяць тому

    What a lot of people don't understand is that fretboards vary based on looks and feel, not sound. The strings never make contact with the fretboard. The tones you get from your electric come from the pickups and the sustain comes from the body. Fretboard wood does not affect tone nor has it ever been proven otherwise. It's a myth. Richlite is the closest to ebony which is why it was used. Yes it may be cheaper to source and yes it may not be a raw piece of wood, but I don't think Gibson tried to cut corners on cost for a measly 25-30 bucks a guitar if it meant ruining their reputation.

    Call me crazy, but I’ve never been picky when it comes to Richlite or any wood material on the fingerboard for that matter.
    In my humble opinion, I think the wood for the neck matters the most. The neck stability, the feel of the neck, and the slight variations in tone, to me, take precedence over other specifications such as the fingerboard.

    Richlite is a great material - I prefer it to wood as it does not swell and contract with temperature and humidity, no/low maintenance (no conditioning, just wipe off with damp rag) and it lasts forever. It feels just fine and you can get it in almost any color. I just had a custom 8-string commissioned and I ordered Richlite for the fretboard.

    • @DanielBobke

      @@DeltaJazzUK Because a) it is expensive and b) I like the look of wood grain on the body and neck. Wood is primarily an aesthetics thing on guitars. Nothing wrong with that - visuals are important. But a fretboard choice has functional implications - like fret sprout, cracking, etc. Richlite looks great as a fretboard (indistinguishable from ebony from a distance) and is a more robust material.
